Not really, the only way I can think of would be to use the Switch's screenshot function to at least have a note of the items required, but if it's the bit I'm thinking of you'd still need 6 or 7 screenshots to get the full list. It's a bit annoying it doesn't use the same system as the collectopedia cards.

I'm only at start of chapter 4, but I get the impression that the real use of gold will be for either constant fabricator use to try and farm rarer items, or having to pay the extortionate Nopon prices for stuff to complete these sort of quests!

Yeah - for now I think I’ll just park that quest up and come back later in the hope I’ve just found the materials I need!

And yes, the collectopedia seems really under utilised and odd. It’s basically automatic fetch quests that require no work other than checking them every now and then, yet actual fetch quests feel like more work than they should and aren’t even tracked :hmm:

Agreed on the bad tracking of materials you need for upgrades etc. Thankfully for side quests that require you to pick up materials off the ground, it actually puts a quest marker over them once it gets close enough to resolve graphically. Pity that kind of user friendliness doesn't extend to other elements of the collection. I don't mind searching, its half the fun, but at least give us a rough idea where to look aside from an item name. You wouldn't want to spoil upcoming areas but some other system would be nice to at least give hints.

Biggest chain attack for me is about 300-400k so far (level 40) on Hard if that makes any difference. 800k is disgusting :P

Totally agree about the material tracking. I just wish gems did not require an encyclopedia of materials to craft. I would rather a couple of unique, or rare items, that can be farmed from beasties or something.

Level 52 now at around 50 hours in, and my highest chain attack was 1.5 million. Was incredible. It actually never gets old for me, as it feels like a puzzle each time! Got such high damage output as managed to get the damage multiplier up to 1200% for the last chain, and each hit was 100k plus. Felt absolutely staggering.

Still desperate to play all the time, and at work atm all I can do is think about it. Few games keep me this invested so many hours in. Truly fantastic.

OK, this cutscene has taken the absolute piss!! Feel like I'e just watched a bloody feature length!!

I enjoyed it but it was long.

I'm not sure where I am in Chapter 6 as decided to do more side quests and hero quests (some are pretty good).

I'm now level 72.

Yeah, I made the mistake of starting the end of Ch5 last night, carrying on this morning into Ch6, all in all it took a good few hours out of me, but I could NOT put it down till I could, if that makes sense 😛

I’ve started to loosen up and just explore now I’m on Chapter 4, and this game is massive :o

Reminding me quite a bit of Breath of The Wild, those stunning vistas and huge draw distances are a sight to behold, and just the way it entices you to go off and explore, and often rewards as you discover something new.

Grr, just spent about 2 hours looking for a material for a gem upgrade. Assuming that because the gem level was low I had missed the material on a mob somewhere, I went exploring every zone so far and slaying beasts everywhere that sounded like they might have it... before finally giving up to find its not available until the next chapter. Case in point for the arguments we made earlier! On the plus side I have explored many nooks and crannies of the early zones and found a whole load of unique bosses, landmarks and so on. Also I just hit level 40 and so now I'm off to spend ages filling up all the lovely skill, Art and gem slots I've unlocked. Whee!

One more chapter left and one more class left to find. I'm just not ready for this game to end. I've done a lot of side quests but will probably need to find a guide to help me with some. I've seen many areas which have been barely used yet, including one which just screams "max out first or die".

I do wonder how many of these heroes are missable? I found a couple from just exploring, another one which appears as part of an optional side quest etc.

For me this is easily the most addictive of the series (I've played them all apart from X). I do have some issues with the  characters (and delivery of the voice acting) but the world and gameplay rises above that. Looking forward to seeing what MonolithSoft will pull off on better hardware. Amazing that at the end of the day this is running on what for many is an old handheld system.

I don't think so? Different characters have different aptitudes for different classes (the letter grading in the top-right on the class screen), and that affects how quickly they rank up. Having multiple characters with the same class speeds up how quickly others unlock that class. But all my characters have the same level and XP after 50 hours.

Yeah normal EXP is not affected by class, but like revlob says; you've probably had some members get extra class XP due to being proficient in the class they are using. What is a bit unclear to me is how different characters learn a brand new class (i.e. locked class) at different rates. I'm assuming its also based on their proficiency in the class being learned.

On another topic, it annoys me in this game how there are a bunch of status effects and Art functions that don't seem to be explained anywhere. Take these for example:

  • Target Lock - does it force the enemy to attack the character that target locks? If so, it doesn't always work. What are the mechanics here?
  • Awakened - some type of combat buff that is unexplained. Seems like a stacking ability of some sort. Does it reset or drain over time... who knows?

There's a bunch of other ones that aren't explained, unless I've somehow missed a list of all status effects in the tips or something. Its hard to make builds and strategise when you don't even know what some of your abilities do! If anyone can enlighten me, please feel free.

Also a word of warning to anyone up to Tau colony sidequests (following is not a spoiler) - in a quest that has 2 options for victory, whatever you do don't go for the option that requires you to collect shit. It took me literal hours, and it was sheer stubbornness and lost cost fallacy that kept me doing it. The reward wasn't worth it!

There is an entry in the "tips" section which does briefly catalogue buffs & debuffs. Easy to miss because I don't think it's ever shown to the player unless they look for it, and navigating the tips section is painful. I'm pretty sure "Awakened" is in there, but it's not a comprehensive list because it doesn't unclude the "Art follow up" area effect one of the heroes is capable of creating.

I was umming and aahing over whether I was enjoying this yesterday so upped it to hard. It made the fights against mobs a lot longer which meant I had to actually think tactically about some of them so did make it feel a fair bit more enjoyable combat wise. But then I got to a boss and just got absolutely wrecked. I spent a while in the menus, changed my setups, thought about what would work and what wouldn't, gemstones, accessories, the lot! And you guessed it!

Died even quicker. Is it a case of levelling up a load? The boss is Level 22 with the old flaming wings and I'm about 22 I think. Should I be much much higher or is it just a case of taking things down to normal again? I'm about 11 or 12 hours in and it's my first Xenoblade game.

Yeah the bosses are very tough on hard. It is possible to do them when you're at the same level but you'll really need good gear, the right arts, good proficiency in the classes and to use abilities at the right times. I've found every boss on hard to be a real challenge when fighting them at the same level. Overlevelling a bit should help, for context there was one side-quest boss I couldn't beat until I was about 3 or 4 levels above his level. What I generally do when I'm stuck on a boss is go off and do side content. That helps level up classes, unlocks Heroes (another must-have in your arsenal), and unlocks helpful goodies. Also head off and explore, the crates and containers have loads of good gear in them. Try to get some of your gems upgraded if you can as well. I have the benefit of 2 Xenoblade games and I still find some of the bosses very tough! Of course if you overlevel enough, you'll still be able to brute force it, but where's the fun in that? Its really satisfying to make a good setup and use all the goodies you've earned in side content to come out victorious. For now I'd do that and don't be afraid to go a few levels above the boss.

50 hours in now and the game just keeps getting stronger. I’m doing a fair bit of side quests whilst trying to keep the main story going as well because it’s really gripping and I just love how it’s presented.

The locations continue to impress, the part just before entering Swordmarch is beautiful.

But the thing with this game that sets it above the completion, imo, is the battle system. It just never gets boring mixing up classes and setting up combos etc. there’s so much depth to it yet it’s really easy to understand and use.
