I played the whole game with the default roles, the roles are just there if you want to play about with them. You can pretty much ignore the whole party other than your character. The AI handles it all well.

Good to know. In any case I've stopped overthinking it, shut my yap and just enjoyed the hell out of it. It has clicked and then some after the Consul K fight.

I have been enjoying going completely off-piste in Chapter 3.

Spoiler

I've now liberated Colonies 4, 30, 9 and Gamma. I've also found the Nopon Coin Exchange, and encountered the the dual-wielding dude who is clearly going to be another hero, although I thought I should maybe do a bit more story before I chase him down. Colony affinities are mostly 2-3 stars. Level-wise, I'm somewhere in the early 30s, so uh, not quite double the recommended level for the main story.

Flash Fencer is the best of the new classes to play as so far, followed by Guardian Commander. I haven't quite got the hang of Thaumaturge yet, but War Medic is staggeringly dull, even for a healer class.

Just got to the old battlefield where Eunie discovers the corpse of a past incarnation, which is a twist I'd already guessed, but it was well handled.

I'm into Chapter 4 now, and I believe I've just met the answer to those zip wires, although I haven't taken on the hero quest yet.

I'm absurdly over levelled at L40 (about 9-10 levels above the monsters I meet), as I completely explored the Dannagh Desert and the new area from the end of chapter 3/start of chapter 4, and I've also been doing lots of colony affinity quests. I've started hitting the auto-sell limit on some things now, most notably Silver Nopon Coins, so I've stopped hoarding them and started using them to buy class upgrades from time to time instead. I also routinely use them to buy food, as 1 coin is ridiculously cheap compared to collecting all the necessary ingredients.

A few Chapter 3/4 spoilers:

Spoiler

The end of C3 was suitably epic, loved it when Sena and Lanz flipped that enormous ferronis onto its back like a giant turtle. The Strategos class seems a bit average, although the defence-reducing No Love Lost is a nice art, and I like being able to join two heal-on-hit attacks together as part of a fusion combo. It seems to be pretty hard to land debuffs in this game though, as opposed to reactions. Full Metal Jaguar is great fun, though - nice to see an offensive ether build that isn't a spellcaster. I quite enjoy Yumsmith too, and it's nice to have a break art back in the team (everyone mastered Swordfighter a looong time ago) - lots of diving around with R3 for the positionals.

The Yumsmith uniform is proper daft, though - it's hard to take Mio's anxiety about mortality seriously when she's dressed in a comedy chef's hat. I tried changing everyone back to their original class uniforms though, and found I couldn't remember what class anyone was, so I guess I'll have to live with it for now.

Properly gasped when I saw that Morytha skyscraper embedded in the cliff face up by the waterfalls! I wasn't expecting that.

I found a mysterious pair of doors in the Dannagh Desert, which none of the characters commented on and won't open - presumably that'll come into play later?

I’m level 43 and still in chapter 4 (will read that spoiler later). Been rinsing as many side quests and trying to open all the maps. Looking at some of the areas I’m gonna need one of the big robot things from xcx to reach them as I can’t see a regular way up.

Something I realised yesterday - a tiny little collectopedia card appears on the HUD, just below the map, if you have the required items to do a first-time-reward Collectopedia card.

Also, recruiting the latest C4 hero seems to have given me the ability to cancel regular arts into each other, which I discovered entirely by accident while browsing the tips menu trying to find out what on earth the Art Follow Up buff was (and failing). Not sure if the game is going to actually tell me this in a cut scene at some point.

Slowly progressing, in the early stages of Chapter 5 at the moment. I've been off work with what turned out to be Covid, so got some extra play time in.

Spoiler

Just got to The City, although before doing that I went back and finally unlocked Alexandria and Colony Iota, then did quite a few other sidequests, including kicking off Zeon's ascension quest.

I must say that the world is getting a lot richer now interaction between communities is starting to kick in, like Colony Tau teaching Colony 9 how to grow crops. I'm also enjoying watching the liberated NPCs slowly discover romantic love and sexual attraction, which thus far is handled quite sweetly. From the discussions about Agnians/Kevesi not understanding parenthood etc, I'm guessing this is going to be a theme carried through the chapter.

Combat-wise, I accidentally got into a fight with a unique a few levels above me, and kicked its arse, so I think I've reached the tipping point where the accrued skills and equipment mean that I'm now punching above my weight. I'm certainly not having to revert back to a "best" set of classes for boss fights anymore, just wallop them with whatever gear I've got on (although I try to keep my party in a 2:2:2 fighter/healer/defender ratio). I like the mix of strategy and randomness in the chain attacks, pushing my luck to try and fit a hero round in and making sure I've always got an Oroborous combo to end with.

Classes:

- Stalker sounds fun on paper and I love the outfit, but all the arts are so damn slow. Juniper's VA sounded like she was struggling with the not-very-well-written dialog when you first get to Colony Tau.

- Lone Exile is stupidly fun, and Ashera herself is basically a cheat mode in chain attacks. The whole Colony 11 section was tonally a bit out of place, but great fun, and it's fun seeing the crew realise that while they've given people free will, some people aren't going to use that in the way they're expecting.

- Incursor is quite good fun, although I get the impression it'll be more effective late game than right now. Still getting the hang of Alexandria and her colony.

For class progression, I'm making frequent use of nopon coins to buy class levels (especially for D/E ranked ones), and basically always have the +20% CP food on the go, unless I'm hunting gem materials. I figure it's like FF7, where consistently using the double-growth weapons/accessory pays off very quickly. I'm at L50 now, and I'd say most characters have 2-3 classes left to get to Rank 10, although I guess I'm about to get another one from Monica, and unlock another 10 ranks of Zeon's.

That said, while the food is largely delightful, I do feel the portions are a bit large. I keep discovering entirely new areas (like the one north of Colony Iota) which I'm not sure I've got the energy to explore, and I can't be more than 2/3rds of the way through the game. I remember having similar sensations in XC1  & 2, so I guess it's just a thing. I'm certainly not going to rush into the DLC.

Chapter 5 fun:

Spoiler

This week, I have:

  • Learnt where babies come from!
  • Grown potatoes, vastly enriching a certain Nopon in the process!
  • Discovered what happens to Gold Rank colonies!
  • Finally given in and used the Costumes menu after seeing Taion in the Yumsmith outfit!
  • Recruited Monica, and smashed the shit out of everything with Eunie!
  • Taken my now thoroughly lethal wrecking crew on a tour of various elite military installations! First I blasted my way across the heavily fortified frontline between the Clifftop Ferronis Hulk and the battlefield where Ethel and Cammuravi fell, then followed it up by warping back into Keves Castle and taking out all the uniques I snuck past earlier. Looks like I'll be returning here later, based on the locked doors and blocked access to the throne room.

What I should have been doing is going to Agnus castle on the boat, which I guess I'll do tonight.

The Erythia Sea is intimidatingly vast, and I just know I’m going to end up driving The Boundary backwards and forwards to map it all, pillock that I am.

I used to call clearing the fog of war like this “lawnmowing” back in Baldur’s Gate.

On the plus side, I have found two legendary grade accessories while footling around. Apparently there are seven in this area.

Christ, finishing Chapter 5 on my lunchbreak was a mistake.

Spoiler

Tears in my mulligatawny soup, genuinely.

Now need to try and focus on work until 17:30 or so when I can start Chapter 6. Not going to be easy.

Spoiler warnings for that trailer, bits of Chapter 5/6 blown wide open in the first few minutes.

Fortunately I’d just seen them last week, but I didn’t watch any further in case anything else from the main game gets spoiled.

I’m on chapter 7 now. Have spent a fair bit of time doing side quests and new ones keep popping up. I’m hoping I get a warning about not being able to turn back before I go too far like XC2 had.

Wow, you’ve pulled ahead of me. Still barely advanced the plot in Ch 6 here, doing side quests and ascension quests.

Presumably Ch 6 is less massive than Ch 5 was in terms of new areas unveiled? Feels like Erythia Sea has been half the game at this point.

Every ascension quest done, every side quest done and I’m now on to hunting the last of the Aionios’ strongest. It’s a level 110 Beastie and I’m at level 90. Once that’s down then chat and do the final beast before heading back to wrap up the story.

Gonna be so ridiculously over levelled.

Anyone doing/done the DLC - my son has hit a brick wall trying to find a black crystal, needed to continue with the story. Can’t really find any help online either

Playing it - really feeling it - not got to that bit as yet - found this on twitter to help:

Finished. Found the last chapter boring, to be honest, or at least the setting it played in.

Still, it's one of the few JRPGS where I beat the final boss in my first try. Nice change.

I don't think I'll bother with the DLCs though, 95 hours are enough.
