I want a Quaxly but I don’t want it as a starter because I don’t want it to evolve.

All the final evolutions this time are a complete dumpster fire. I think the water one is only slightly redeemed by Sass

Anyone who doesn't pick Quaxly is dead to me and I hate them.

Quaxly and Sprigatito are both great. But my kids have already bagsied them, which means I get left with the ugly fire thing, Cacafuego or whatever it's called.

Ah well, I got Scorbunny last time, so can't complain too much.

I’m on team Quaxly. The character movement and environment is giving me a Kingdom Hearts vibe. But I’m glad of all the hand-holding seeing as it’s about 20 years since I last played one of these.

Do you need two Switches to do trading locally? My kids have asked for Pokémon this year, but we only have a single console.

We traded Pokemon locally in Pokemon Sword using the Pokemon Home app. I could take mons out of the box on my save and put them in a box on his save. It's not a terribly well advertised feature, but was very useful for rounding out his Pokedex.

Probably going to get this at Christmas for the kids, hopefully it'll have had a few performance patches by then.

However Pokemon that evolve by trading need to be traded system to system, they do not evolve if moved to Home.

I'm only just out of the intro bit and I've been left to wander alone. Really enjoying it so far. The freedom of Arceus but with more traditional battling and finally a Wild Area that lives up to the idea - a large open space with Pokémon roaming everywhere. Pokédex is filling up nice and quickly too as there seem to be plenty of different species roaming the starting area at least.

Is the performance that bad?, going to buy this for my niece.

Yes and no. The LOD animation is annoying if you’re looking for it, there is some stuttering… It’s not a dealbreaker and I doubt your niece will care as the game is utterly charming.

Yeah you're right, she's young that she wouldn't care. So much has been made about the performance that I wondered if it's detrimental to the game overall.

My son has played it for 5(!) hours after school pretty much and hasn't mentioned anything so I suspect stuff that is pulled apart by reviewers and the internet won't be noticed so much by people - especially kids - when playing it. He's done 2 gyms he said so a reasonable way in I guess.

You will definitely notice the frame drops in distant animations, and the stuttering when moving the camera. No question; it's there, and it's ugly.

But, it truly doesn't impact on the game in any meaningful way. Everything that matters works just as it should, and the game will absolutely delight you far more than it frustrates you.

She won't care, my 6 year old has been on it all morning and hasn't once mentioned LOD issues or stuttering.

It is a bit on the rough side, but it's only grumpy old gamers who'll let it spoil the game.

The performance and graphics are legitimately terrible. It's amazing how both are so bad when there's far better on the Switch, both individually and together.,

BUT

None of that affects (so far a few hours in) the actual gameplay. It's funny/jarring when you see an NPC frame rate in town switch to a literal slideshow as they're more than 10m from you (everything largely seems distance based)- but it means nothing to the actual playing experience. Catching, exploring, fighting etc all flow well and new approaches don't need 60FPS/20billionp to have turn based battles etc.

One thing that does grate though there's a 1-2second pause/slowdown when you open some menus (e.g. pokemon boxes)

I’d say this is the most smooth, frictionless Pokémon I’ve played. It sands off a lot of the edges that slowed down precious games. Case in point - picking up items in the field no longer causes you to stop and scroll through 2 or 3 pages of text; the text now appears while you continue to move, and it disappears automatically.

I disagree with this. It feels like a step back from Legends Arceus to me. That had a wonderful quick flow to catching, battles and exploration. It also felt much better to control. You’d think that was the test/proof of concept for this but I feel like they’ve made something worse.

Sorry to interrupt the tech thread, but I just want to share my thoughts on the game itself so far.

The Wild Area was a tantalising glimpse into what an open-word Pokemon game could be, but always felt a little constrained. Arceus improved on the concept in all the right ways, transforming wild Pokemon from solitary creatures into living and breathing entities. But the feel of an actual world was still not quite there, until now. This has absolutely nailed it, in my opinion. They are absolutely everywhere, and it remains exciting to see a bunch of Lechonk in the world regardless of how high-level you are reaching. Low-level no-threat Pokemon that run away, as well as high-level beasts that will KO you as soon as look at you are all over the place, and entering a new area for the first time gives a genuine "Who is gonna be around here?" feeling, that has been missing in recent games.

Admittedly, some of this may be down to my own choice to go in as blind and uninformed as possible, but even when I see a Gen 1 favourite it makes me happy. I've chosen to play through with only Paldean mons in my party, but the sheer variety means that I'm on the edge of abandoning that rule because some of them are just so charming that I want any excuse to have them on screen!

The rest is spoilered, but should only be avoided if you are going in completely cold. Anyone who has reached the University should be okay to read it.

Spoiler

I was a little concerned with the whole "3 paths" aspect, because I didn't want to be locked in on any of them if it meant I then had to complete it to be allowed the others. Thankfully, my fears were unfounded, and right now I have the first gym as well as the first Titan. A critical hit meant I didn't catch said Titan, so I don't know if that is even possible yet. I will be slightly annoyed if I've missed out on a one-shot only, but it's not the end of the world. I guess I would just have preferred a little more hand-holding in this respect.

This is the inherent problem with open-wrold games, to be fair. No matter how hard a designer tries, there are always going to be limits on how you stop players going to places way too powerful for them. I have no idea if the Star base I found is the right one to start with, but it was definitely way above my team level when I came across it. It could easily be meant to be the 3rd I find, because I will alway try to go the "wrong" way in any game. (I genuinely did the gyms in Gold in the wrong order; 1, 2, 5, 4, 3, 6, 7, 8. To this day I don't even know how I managed it.)

CRAFTING! This is finally the perfect solution for TMs. I've always felt they got the idea of TM and HM the wrong way round, because having to carry around a CUTter was far more frustrating than it needed to be. If CUT was an HM, why was it not the most powerful Normal-type attack? Different solutions have been attempted to get round this initial design decision, and they finally have the most elegant work-around to date. I found a Surf TM, no longer an HM, and it costs 10,000 league points to craft. On top of this, I don't even know what drops I'll have to farm from whichever Pokemon drop them. Every Pokemon in a family always dropping the same thing means that the grind is minimal, but achieveable.

Meal powers? I haven't really examined them enough to know the difference they make, yet, but anything that allows me to have some kind of control over my journey is to be applauded. I couldn't tell you at this point what a Teensy or Humongo power is, or precisely what an Exp. Point Power:Fighting actually boosts, but I'm sure I'll be able to suss it out. And this is without even setting up my own picnic yet, to see what sandwiches I can make for myself.

The one thing I'm not so sure on is Eggs. That they are given to you from picnic seems a bit too random in a series that has, for a long time now, been edging ever closer to "Basically, you can build your own Pokemon if you just have the patience." Presumably there is some more traditional breeding in the game later on? Again, going in blind like this makes it tough to know.

Alright, sticky stuff dealt with. The summary doesn't need hiding!

Quite simply, this is a wonderful game. The core concept of Pokemon is so clearly a winner, that Game Freak would have to work really hard to get it wrong. And while it does look as if ambition may have slightly surpassed technical ability, I can't fault the ideas that have been explored. It's more fun riding around Paldea than it ever was in Galar, and even more interesting than in Sinnoh. And all of this is based on what I would guess is about 25-33% of the world so far. I'm loving it, and can't wait to see what else happens.

Is there any way to use the ‘let’s go’ battle xp when your mains on a rampage to trigger level ups?

Also anyone found a way to change Pokémon names yet? Got a lovely one from trade but it’s in Japanese characters.

We have never been able to change the names of traded Pokémon, although having just said that I now vaguely recall it being limited to a 1-time possibility in Sword/Shield. You can rename a Pokémon on its summary page when you press X.
