I disagree with this. It feels like a step back from Legends Arceus to me. That had a wonderful quick flow to catching, battles and exploration. It also felt much better to control. You’d think that was the test/proof of concept for this but I feel like they’ve made something worse.

I don’t disagree that Arceus was a really positive and smoothly designed game, but it also had quite a different core loop to it - for a mainline game, Scarlet/Violet is the nuts, and the best one yet. Its open world is also more cohesive than Arceus, which had more of an MMO-style design. Scarlet/Violet still isn’t Breath if the Wild, which was fully cohesive - from what I’ve seen so far, the regions are gated off from each other behind loading screens - but it’s the best attempt by Gamefreak yet.

The Wild Area was a tantalising glimpse into what an open-word Pokemon game could be, but always felt a little constrained. Arceus improved on the concept in all the right ways, transforming wild Pokemon from solitary creatures into living and breathing entities. But the feel of an actual world was still not quite there, until now. This has absolutely nailed it, in my opinion. They are absolutely everywhere, and it remains exciting to see a bunch of Lechonk in the world regardless of how high-level you are reaching. Low-level no-threat Pokemon that run away, as well as high-level beasts that will KO you as soon as look at you are all over the place, and entering a new area for the first time gives a genuine "Who is gonna be around here?" feeling, that has been missing in recent games.

Very well put. The density of ‘mons here is brilliant - especially when you see a flock of the sparrow-type birds together, all hopping around, or a herd of Lechock.

This has to be the most lacklustre Pokémon launch ever.

In what way?

I'd say this place is always cool on Pokémon.

My usual Pokemon adult friends all jumped in. And isn't it like the most pre-ordered Pokémon game ever.

I've not myself yet because I'm not sure I'll really give it the time it needs.

Getting a little down(er) on this now - although I've played a lot this week.

5 Gyms
4 Legends
3 Base.

190ish caught/220ish seen

The world is huge...but dull. I've not (yet) come across any real emergent stories or settings. Coupled with identikit cities and it's feeling big for big's sake rather than any reason.

The pop in and pokemon spawning about 25m in front of you (and despawning as you move away) is beginning to make the world feel soulless to. There's no set spawns just "You'll see this list of pokemon, spawning randomly spaced 3m apart in this area". It's like they took the approach to what could spawn in the "tall grass" and then just said "spawn anywhere". The spawn locations haven't been designed/placed etc. I don't feel like I'm traveling through a world or environment - just seeing zoning of pokemon. (Not helped by moving slightly away and then back sees an entirely different set spawn). Arceus did the "Pokemon Safari" feel much better

Perfomance continues to be terrible - and now I've found one that's affecting my gameplay. "L Targeting" sometimes working, sometimes not. I've not found any rhyme or reason to why sometimes it'll refuse to lock on and others it will snap on.

This is legitimately annoying. You can be about a metre from a ‘mon and it still won’t lock.

I was worried from initial reports about this.  So much so I’ve not taken it out of its shrink wrapping as I thought I might send it back if it was that bad.

rllmuk has restored my faith*, I’m gonna open it! :)

I have been playing and enjoying this, yes it has it's issues but for anyone that has played on a PS1 etc then it's nothing really.

We live in a world where the internet just brings to the forefront everyone nitpicking at everything, yes the game's not perfect and has a few issues but it is still plenty of fun and plenty enjoyable. I do feel like they could do so much more with the games now, additional difficulty options (or more intelligent battles), with it being open world there is so much more scope for mini storylines / side quests or maybe even flesh out the time you spend with gym trainers a little more akin to the tv series or maybe when you are searching for the titans make it into more of a big deal, spend your time learning about their habbits, find ways to entice them out etc.

I do like that there are 3 story paths to progress, I also like that the whole map is open to you right from the off, you can literally go anywhere. I also like that I select the trainers I want to battle with by speaking to them and there is a little less hand holding that I am used to with pokemon games which is a pleasant change of pace.

It has niggles yes, it has things I would like to see Gamefreak try but overall I am enjoying the game

It's enjoyable but can look really ropey sometimes.

And why are all the Pokemon at the start so bloody small? You can hardly see what they are sometimes.

Yes! The number of times I have run into a pokemon because I could not see them in front of my mount!

I know Legends was a bit grindy in the Pokedex task thing but I kind of miss it. I don't really feel like theres even a need to fight wild Pokemon anymore once I've caught enough to get all their evolutions.

If you catch more of a wild pokemon do they evolve quicker?

No. I just meant that if a Pokemon evolves 2 times, once I have 3 so I can keep a living dex of all the Pokemon in the game I will just ignore them.

AAAAARRRRGHHH, FUCK OFF, TYNAMO! (Admittedly, my own stupid fault for jumping into the sea with no plan, but still highly frustrating.)

The Team Star Grunt theme is amazing too. I know Toby Fox wrote the main overworld theme, but I feel like this one has to be by him too. Just a shame that by the time it really kicks in at 1:02, you've probably beaten the puny grunt lol.

Jeez. The final "spectacular mysterious area" is like a 360 game environment struggling to run.

3 paths and their follow up done - about 290 caught, 340 seen.

I'm not sure I'll go back for a bit. There's something very very satisfying about slowly ticking off the pokedex as you fill it up, but I really don't want to spend anymore time in this open world right now.

Feel sorry for Gamefreak. The crunch to get his out the door must have been ridiculous. They've just about reach a viable product, but you've got to feel for them,
