Elden Ring - How do I? thread

That still doesn’t explain why the scaled part of the damage increases when the scaling letters don’t change. This has confused me as well, I don’t get why sometimes the letters change colour even though they are ‘changing’ to the same scaling letter. Are there hidden sub-levels within each letter or something? Or is a ‘Quality C’ different from a ‘Standard C’ which is different from a ‘Magic C’, etc?

Hidden sub levels I believe.

Unlike in previous Souls games, the Ashes of War let you change your weapon affinity really easily, depending on the enemies you know you're going to be coming into contact with, and there's no penalty for doing so.

Whenever I got into a catacomb, for example, I'll add a holy-type ash of war to my weapon and make it sacred as I know that the undead enemies I'll likely find there are susceptible to the holy damage that particular ash of war adds to my weapon. If I'm up against something fleshy with a lot of health then lacerating ashes of war, which let you add the blood loss effect to your weapon, are useful at cutting through big health bars, if you can land enough hits. Lots of beast-like enemies are susceptible to fire, armoured enemies are often susceptible to magic, etc.

On the holy type ash of war

Spoiler

Sacred weapon

Anyone understand exactly what it does? Does it scale with faith all the time or only when you use the weapon art and make it glow? I’m mostly faith, but I’ve not found a somber smithing stone to upgrade my main weapon in days, so thinking about swapping to a claymore without any inherent faith scaling and slapping the ash on it. It’s a +11 rather than a +4. Although presumably the weapons that use somber stones power up differently to the normal ones?

Sorry, I forgot to include the screenshot. It doesn’t seem to be turning it into a magic one:

But there’s no change to the scaling stats? D > D for both Dex and Str.

The letters represent a 'range' of damamge bonus, e.g. D could mean like 5-10%

@HarryBizzle - if you actually apply the art, on the next screen you get to choose between 'quality' and 'standard'.  Standard will keep things as they already are.

Using specific str/dex/quality scaling isn't worth it til your related stats are about 20 or higher, tbh.

Each weapon art will have a default type of scaling, you can choose to keep it or use standard.

Over time you'll find items that give you more options again, so you can make any weapon art apply quality, heavy, keen, etc.

Yeah, being able to chop & change as will, at grace sites as opposed to a blacksmith, is a fantastic addition.

If it’s like the staff: time for two handing!

  Reveal hidden contents

When you’re on horseback with a staff in your left hand, the button input for ‘two hand right hand weapon’ will equip your left hand weapon for you to use. You then use R1 to fire spells and L1 just does a melee attack to the left.

Ah that's awesome, thanks. The game never tells you this anywhere, it would suck to be a proper caster and never know this!

I'm surprised there's no comically broken combinations doing the rounds yet. That do infinite damage or just knock baddies through the floor.

I've seen videos for a gear/spell combo that one shots bosses.

Apologies if asked already, but if I play the PS4 version and the PS5 version on my PS5 will it keep separate saves? I have a PS4 in the office on which I've started a different build and I wouldn't mind swapping between the two if I need to.

Launch PS4 version runs surprisingly well.

I stupidly used a boss item in a boss. It gave me 20k. I then swiftly died.

Run in, grab your runes and then go into the system menu and save/ quit.  When you restart you'll be outside the boss area and will have your runes.

Use a summon to distract the boss to give you more time to do the above

Couple more questions:

What's the difference between fletched and unfletched arrows?  Damage is the same so am guessing range?

What are the glowing golden vertical bars that occasionally appear around my character like in this screenie.  In this case I was in an area with lots of floating golden leaves, is that connected?

No idea on the arrows as I've not used any ranged weapons yet (but really should as they were very handy in the other games).

I don't see your pic but the glowing lines typically show that some kind of buff/protection is in effect. I have one that  seems to activate in some situations but have not idea what it is or what it is doing. You'll see similar when you use a flask of physik...

It’ll be your flask of physic effects, or some similar buff. If you’re in an area where there are lots of falling golden leaves, that gives you a buff, too - think it increases the souls you get or item find for a bit, can’t remember.

Maybe I’m being an idiot, but I haven’t found a single map since the very first one right at the start of the game. My map screen is a sea of icons over brown nothingness. Anyone else?

EDIT: Of course, one minute after I posted that I found my first map in 15 hours. 🤦
