From the man himself a few years back:

"It would be called Monkey Island 3a," he wrote. "All the games after Monkey Island 2 don't exist in my Monkey Island universe. My apologies to the all talented people who worked on them and the people who loved them, but I'd want to pick up where I left off. Free of baggage. In a carnival. That doesn't mean I won't steal some good ideas or characters from other games. I'm not above that."

Just the idea of it starting in the carnival brings shivers to me. That is probably my favourite ending to any game ever. A proper what the fuck moment.

3 was great. It just came out a bit later when point 'n' click adventures didn't seem quite so amazing as they had earlier in the decade. We had PlayStation's and Wipeout and stuff like that by then. Lucasarts games seemed like playable movies in the early 90s and the production values were way ahead of anything else. The cinematography in Curse is fantastic, but a lot of games had fantastic cinematography by then. Resident Evil and Final Fantasy 7 both existed by that point.

The storyline, jokes, setting etc are probably just as good. It's just that by virtue of being released when they were, the first two games have that magical feel to them. What the French would call a certain ... actually, I don't know what the French would call it.

Trufax.

The one that came behind that was terrible though, but truth be told the engine was responsible for a lot. It did have Ignacius Cheese.

And even the episodes by Telltale still had their moments, but never reached the level of the first trilogy

I'm a big fan of the art style of 1 and 2, so I've got to confess that I'm apprehensive about this new style. Not to say, it's horrible, it just takes some adjusting to - yes, even after three non-pixel art sequels. If they'd made the whole game in the pixel style of MI2, I'd be ecstatic. Then again, I'd also like them to have a verb menu at the bottom of the screen.

The iOS versions haven’t worked for years, have they? Maybe the iPad versions have been updated to work on newer hardware. You can buy the special editions off GOG.com, although they’re PC only. If you don’t have a PC, they’ll run on the SCUMMVM emulator on more or less any hardware platform, but you’ll need the original games (which can be found online very easily) - if you want to be honest, you can buy the CD re-releases off eBay very cheaply.

The 360 remasters work on the series consoles too but whether you can still buy them is another matter.

Looks like you can:

I replayed the 360 version of MI1 last year. Annoying that it doesn't let you combine the talkie dialogue with the classic graphics and interface! I didn't get round to replaying MI2SE afterwards, but IIRC it didn't suffer from that problem.

Yeah I was playing last night and tried to find an option to have the talking with the classic graphics and couldn't find anything.

That aside I bloody love the Circus music.

I think there are ways to mod in voices with the original graphics on MI1 Special Edition for PC. Never tried though.

Yeah you can mod it and play it with SCUMMvm. There’s guides on how to do it, or you can download the modded versions from Archive.org

I played it a couple of years ago on my eMac (beautiful CRT) with speech. 😍

I hope we get to revisit Scabb Island. If I could choose a game location to visit in real life, it would be Woodtick!

I guess I'm on my own here but I really didn't like the third game.  I can see why people do, but it lost a load of the magic for me.

I was thinking about this, and I think in my case the reason I initially didn't warm to 3 was that it was the first to not use the pixel art style and the first to use voice acting. As such, we got a much clearer look at how Guybrush looked and sounded... and it didn't match up with the way Guybrush looked and sounded that I'd built up in my head as a kid playing 1 and 2.

Of course, I've subsequently grown to thoroughly enjoy Dominic Armato's performance as Guybrush (fits like a glove) and the art style of 3 really did grow on me too. But I think that initial jarring mistmatch between a young me's creative interpretation of Guybrush and the Guybrush we got was my problem.

Curse had an option in the settings for 3D acceleration, along with a sarcastic reply when you tried to select it. Amazing times!

In all honesty, I’d probably rate Curse along side Secret, with MI2 taking the top spot.

This is a huge reason for me too.  The first two games had quite a realistic style, which the third clearly didn't, and the voice just isn't right in my opinion, I may play the new game with out voice acting turned on.

I never got to the point you did where I could accept either unfortunately.

The style of the events and characters and puzzles just seemed off to me as well.

It does have charm, and is enjoyable, it's just not Monkey Island to me.
