Did you give up on Elden Ring?

Reckon the combat Festival would definitely have been improved if they'd replaced Castellan Jerren with the announcer from Forza screaming "Sick move, bro!!" at you every 20 seconds and you and Alexander the Jar Warrior raced Radahn in a pair of fucking jeeps.

Interesting last few comments given the other thread about gatekeeping of the From games by their fans.

(I'm sure they are hilarious in spirit jokes but unfortunately they reinforce existing perspectives I guess).

For what it's worth (literally nothing) I hated RDR2's open world. It's a perfect example of the uncanny valley for me. Looks great but in the end the NPCs ruin many moments of it. Just so fucking dumb. It's the sort of game journalists jump all over trying to describe how every NPC has motives and things to do in their full lives. And then you play and they actually just walk the same 4 routes unfailing all day on repeat. Get pushed over, or see someone shot, run around for 10 seconds, and then go back to my previous spot and resume action. The Truman show effect I guess.

Funnily enough RDR2 was the game I set aside midway through to make way for ER. And then, much like others here, I got to about 100hrs in and burnt out a bit, stopped dead. Nothing wrong with the game, rather I think 100hrs might be the upper limit of what I can sustain in a single 'run' at a game. I'll probably go back to it after a decent enough gap and pick up where I left off, as though it was a mid-season cliffhanger.

I do find myself favouring mechanically denser games these days though, where you can immediately jump in and be doing something pretty specific, otherwise with limited time (and even an awareness of the literal cost in KWh of running the game) I increasingly struggle to get comfortable chilling and doing nothing much, which is problematic with a game like RDR with it's very deliberate slow pace. At least ER feels pretty lean by comparison, but it still isnt as tight as some of the DS series with their more linear, focused progress-pushes and bossrun dashes. ER by its open nature makes it a bit easy to circumvent a lot of those progress-pushes entirely, and at that point you're just riding around a map. Definitely need a bit of self-moderation as a player to force yourself to engage with fights.

Which comments? My joke about Forza? Come on I love those games but you can't seriously compare Forza and Elden Ring and expect to learn anything particularly interesting and you definitely can't if you drive by the thread with a random list of entirely disparate games with more "interesting" open worlds with no context or explanation and then melt off again.

No, I wasn't including your Forza joke. I should have said couple to be more accurate. Or quoted them. But I was trying to poke and not do so at the same time (because no good can really come from commenting about forum hot takes).

My hot take is that anyone who thought Elden Ring was bad just found it too hard.

That’s a pretty silly thing to say, really. If people didn’t enjoy it, for whatever reason, there’s nothing wrong with that. Besides, It might not have been anything to do with difficulty.

I gave up, but I knew it was a risky title for me to buy in the first place since I never really enjoy boss battles...

Having said that I loved the art style, really enjoyed adventuring around the landscapes and finding things. I gave up at godrick. The combat system felt good actually, but yeah just don't enjoy boss battles and they are tough!

L9oking back at it and having played botw, skyrim, rdr2 etc I think elden ring is too heavy on the combat side of things for me, I need more adventuring.

If you decide to try it again, don't hesitate to summon help for bosses if you are struggling. The system is there for a reason, make use of it.

Tell me you couldn’t beat Margit without telling me you couldn’t beat Margit.

Feel free to tell me to shut up, but did you do everything in Limgrave and the Weeping peninsula before attempting Godrick? I've honestly never played a game which accomplished that feeling of adventuring more.

I’ve pretty much given up on it.

Never been able to get into Soulsbourne games at all, despite buying every single one. Always the same, they don’t hook me enough early on to dedicate the time and patience to progress.

Might swap it for Lego Star Wars.

Lego Star Wars is battling it out with Kirby for GOTY. Do it.

This isn't strictly aimed at you, so apologies, but just on this point. I'm playing through a second time and have come to the conclusion that the ER boss battles are tough, very tough at times! But only if you're under-levelled and/or hamper yourself. The difference between fighting Godrick, for example, at level ~25 and level ~40 is absolutely massive. Obviously the levelling becomes gradually less useful throughout the game, but I really genuinely don't think (sorry if this sounds gatekeep-y) that anything up until the late-game is really very hard *if* you're a high enough level, have a good enough weapon, and you use the summons and everything the game gives you. There's huge scope in ER for getting as powerful as you want.

If anyone still wants to explore the game but got stuck because of this type of thing at an early stage, and doesn't mind a few hints and light pointers in the right direction, things can definitely be made much easier for you! Just ask in the threads :).

Yeh I put it down as well a while back (was enroute to the Giants). Just got a bit bored and didn't go back, as always seems the case with Souls games for me. BB only one I've ever completed. It all just became a bit of a chore.

That said, I still think it is an incredible achievement and filled with wonder. Hopefully has industry wide ramifications.
