Kendrick Lamar - Mr Morale and the Big Steppers

New Kendrick album dropped yesterday, surprised there hasn't been mention of it on this forum yet beyond the transgender thread.

I'm still digesting it but think it's another masterpiece at first listen. It's ostensibly a double album, with a more cathartic first half and a more contemplative / reflective second half.

Think I prefer the second half on first listen but all of his previous records have really taken quite a few listens to reveal everything in them to me, so expecting it to get even better with repeats.

Early standouts are that bold track about transphobia, homophobia and hip hop:

and:

  • Isaac changed the title to Kendrick Lamar - Mr Morale and the Big Steppers

I started listening to it yesterday following all the five star reviews, but honestly his voice does my head in. I got part way through “Worldwide Steppers” where he was singing about “white bitches I’d fucked”

Yeah I've always found it a bit weird how Kendrick often says bitch. It kind of rubs me the wrong way even more than with other rappers (and I don't like it then either though), I don't know why, maybe it's because it seems like he should know better and seems like he wants himself to be taken very seriously yet still loves a bit of casual sexism.

The entire album is essentially a therapy session.

In the song in question is about his sex addiction, cheating on his wife, the fact that he felt having a thing for white women was racist, thinking about his ancestors and how they were slaves during the act, and how he slept with a white woman who's dad was the sheriff because he jailed his uncle.

It's hardly an ego trip. The point is that he doesn't come out of the song well. Most of the album is deliberately dark as fuck.

Maybe he should just get a therapist.

Literally mentions that this has been five years in the making because he's been in therapy a minute into the first song 😂

Seriously? Quite a lot of great art is essentially therapy...

Hmm, that doesn’t mean therefore that quite a lot of therapy is great art - some of this sounds to me like it should have stayed at the clinic.

It’s not even that, really, perhaps I’m just tired of hearing song after song about n***** and b****** over a soundtrack that would have ended up on the cutting room floor for a mid 90’s Italian porno, and then critics falling over themselves to proclaim his genius.

He’s isn’t that good of a rapper really, technically he’s average at best and coupled with that annoying as fuck voice - which only gets worse when he changes it and somehow makes it even more annoying, his music just isn’t for me really.

There's this thing I call Kendrick Syndrome.

It's when you listen to a new Kendrick Lamar album, digest it, realise you like it a lot, keep it in rotation for a while and then never ever listen to it again because you're absolutely done with it.

It's always such an extreme curve, and only really with this guy.
