One thing that’s worth mentioning about that episode is the amazing lighting…so difficult to get that Eighties vibe just right but when they were in the van at the start it was perfect.

I'd say it looked more 70's due to all the orange/gold. The 80's were more white/silver. The episode also takes place in 1979 :)

It was specifically filmed to look like an Eighties straight to video movie. Films from the Seventies looked nothing like that.

I've watched The Viewing twice now, the second time in the early evening on a Friday just after a shower, before going out for the night. Laid on my bed in my dressing gown partaking in a couple of pre night-out two finger Scotch (only Chivas, mind). It really, really got me in a boss mood. Helped that the evening went on to be excellent too.

Think I'll make watching it a bit of ritual every few months before a night out.

Anyway, The Viewing is incredible.

Peter Weller himself states that the year is 1979. Or was that just a dream? :sherlock:

It is possible to make a film about a period of time at a time other than that same period of time.

For clarity, the episode was set in 1979, but the episode was filmed to look like a movie made in the early Eighties. That was the whole point of the lighting.

I didn't get that point to be honest. What is it that I'm missing?

What do you want me to tell you? If you don’t recognise it, you don’t recognise it. But that’s what the director was very clearly doing.

Now you must watch Mandy. ASAP

For me he’s the most exciting director right now.

Yes I’ve seen it mentioned in here, I vaguely remember hearing about it somewhere else on here too - I definitely want to watch it. Is it streaming anywhere?

Just had a look myself. Not on any of the services for "free". Just available for rent or purchase in the usual services. Though a cheap enough rental.

I've lost count of how many years I've been Lovecrafted-out by this point.

I'm up to the one with the Harry Potter kid who somehow looks about ten years older than me. I hope the last two are better.

They are. I thought 5 and 6 were easily the weakest and 7 and 8 two of the strongest.

And now my mini ranking just because:

1. The Autopsy. Incredible television. Particularly great because it had some real intelligence in there from both the main protagonist and the antagonist, and the closing conflict felt like a very logical clash of intellects.

2. The Viewing. Panos Cosmatos continues to astound. I don't think anything more needs to be said.

3. The Outside. For me the most underrated episode. Compelling and weird from start to finish plus it left questions and room for interpretation.

4. Lot 36. The most straightforward story of the lot but I loved the tension building towards the end, even if the monster wasn't as terrifying as it should have been.

5. The Murmuring. A real slow burner with great acting and one or two very creepy moments, but I felt the ending fell very flat.

6. Graveyard Rats. Very well put together, with some very effective claustrophobia at the end. The storyline felt a bit weak to me, though.

7. Pickman's Model. Some nice scene building in the first half, followed by an absolutely disastrous second half where everyone loses the ability to have anything approaching a normal conversation. Very shit.

8. Dreams in the Witch House. Christ this was bad. And worse than that, completely boring. Not even a surprise chest burst could elevate it above 2/10 territory.

Overall I enoyed everything down to number 6! Shame I ended on the two I ranked last, but it doesn't sully the rest, I don't think. I look forward to and hope for more, but please no more Lovecraft.

The Viewing is one of the best things I’ve ever watched. There’s no way it belongs in a set with the other seven episodes, it’s leagues ahead.

I want a leisure room exactly like that one. That’s my next life goal. I should be able to source everything easily enough other than the coke.

Dreams in the Witch House might have been okay if it hadn't been for that dickhead doing the worst Irish accent since Angel from Buffy. Jesus fucking Christ.

Note to self: look up what else the actor has been in and never watch any of it

Was it an Irish accent? I thought he was trying to sound New England. They're kind of related I suppose.

I didn't even recognise him and only Googled him because he was laughably bad.

I watched The Viewing again last night with some popcorn. There's such a huge margin between this one and every other episode. Writing, screenplay, acting, the lot.

I noticed Mandy was on Netflix last night, but doesn't seem to be there tonight. Very fucking weird.

Just finished this. REally enjoyed it, although I think they whole series would have benefited by each episode being a max 30 minutes long.

My only gripe is a Netflix one, where for some reason it refeused to show The Veiwing in HD, which is the only one I want to watch in HD because it's so purdy.

ANyway, looking forward to S2.
