The Jeff Gerstmann Thread

This man remains a threat, and therefore, I thought it would be good to give him his own thread to discuss whatever it is he happens to be doing next.

 

For those of you who missed it, the founder of Giant Bomb left abruptly earlier this week, with very little explanation or acknowledgement from the remaining GB staff.

 

Anyway, he has a set up a few new channels:

I think he’s still working out the kinks and planning what he’s going to be doing, but (predictably) there’s also a patreon out there which I won’t bother linking to.

 

 

I’ve been watching a bit of his twitch recently and have been enjoying it more than either Giant Bomb or Nextlander. Talking over press conferences works a lot better when there’s just one person making the odd comment rather than 3+ people talking incessantly.

Pleased he’s his own boss again. Could listen to the man speak all day, and that appears to be the direction he’s taking. Looking forward to giving his podcast a go, although wondering if he’ll ramble solo or have a rotating panel of guests?

Signed up to his patreon, and enjoyed his first podcast a lot.  It’s a very special skill to be able to talk by yourself for 3 hours and remain entertaining.

Well, for a start, he’s got 6.5K viewers on his stream right now and the team he’s just left somewhat unceremoniously have 700.

Due to their being no Nextlander stream for the watchalong last night I opted for Gerstmann. It's nice that even with the games he knows he's going to hate (the Rick and Morty.....thing) he doesn't go overboard which I appreciated. Unlike Giantbomb which I found unwatchable thanks to that shit. And seeing Gerstmann get thousands more viewers than GB was a glorious sight to behold.

Nextlander were part of the Waypoint stream last night. No idea why they do that sometimes. I really enjoyed watching Jeff last night. He put in the hours and got the viewers (Including multiple hype trains). At the peak he was 4k ahead of GB and then carried on for the PC stream which I appreciated. For comparison GB packed up after the XBox stream and instead decided to watch some game trailers from an earlier show to an audience of a couple of hundred.

This is what I love most about h going solo right from his first stream. Like the early GB days he's doing whatever seems fun in the moment and what the audience is responding to. While over at GB they have a corporate meeting scheduled and spontaneity isn't possible if it hasn't been scheduled in their shared agendas well in advance.

 

With one his first streams Jeff decided at some point, hey let's just go watch this instead of wrapping it up. It felt so refreshing and immediately I realized that that was one of the things I'd been missing from GB for awhile.

On the talkover bits I much prefer a single person talking over the conferences rather than 4-6 people as everyone ends up talking over EVERYTHING.  Jeff provides comment and because it's just him it leaves some space for the actual presentation.   Good balance.

I chose Jeff’s streams over NL and GB for that very reason.

I think that there’s a lot of potential in the current GB crew if they play it right and Dan gets some good ideas out.

 

The problem with Jeff, as much as I like him, is he’s incredibly stubborn. Perhaps working alone is best for him, I could easily see people come out at a later date and say he was a nightmare boss.

I always felt like Jeff was burnt out on games after doing this so long. Really seems like it was just the corporate culture that he was tired of. 
 

Dude is a unique talent when it comes to talking about games. I might finally have to get a patreon account.

I think he's got quite a dominant personality and I suspect he doesn't truly respect the opinions of people who weren't in the trenches with him, like Ryan Davis and Vinny. Even Alex and Brad, who were there, are generally pretty non-confrontational people and seem to have like a little brother relationship with Jeff - they've known him forever but you get the sense he doesn't really respect them in the same way as he did with say, Ryan.

Glad to hear he's doing this. My favourite GB videos tended to be the ones where he was on his own just playing a load of C64 games or whatever. Plus away from the others he was less boisterous, just calmly sharing his knowledge and love of games.

Easier to do with one person, but GB always streamed on Twitch while only reading their own chat which I found kind of rude for some reason.

Yup. He's making a point of keeping an eye on both Twitch chat and his discord when he's doing streams. That's good.

Jeff is brilliant in this format. I had written him off for a while now - he was sucking the life (or so I thought) out of Giant Bomb but yeh, seems like he was fed up of working there and in hindsight who can blame him.

 

Last night he was brilliant, and the little insights he drops are great too. And yep, got to say - him mentioning he is going to go for a bathroom break then be back for the PC Gaming show was awesome... Love it.

 

I also liked when we hit the 1 hour mark of the MS presentation and he checked in with everyone - "how we doing? how we thinking this is going so far?" - it felt for once that the old Jeff Gerstmann is back and it was a joy to see.

I dont know anything about twitch to be honest but what do I do to keep up with what he is doing? Do I need Amazon Prime for that or is there a cheaper way? I know there is a patreon but if I sign up to that do I need to then sign up to twitch also to not get ads on his streams?
