Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Team Ninja's take on Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Keyboard Koala

Recommended Posts

Ok so thanks to the encouragement from you guys I’ve reinstalled it. Managed to eventually beat the big monkey, by the skin of my teeth I may add as once I got him down to about 1/5th of energy I lost my rhythm and lost a lot of my own energy. It came down to one final hit either way and one of us would die. I just managed to get there first… tense as fuck!!!

After that I managed to beat the next boss, the warthog thing, first time!

So onwards to a new area, no more dusty brown level 🥳

I’ll do a bit more progression then look into the multiplayer aspect, once I’m a bit more confident in my skills.

Made the following adjustments to the difficulty of the sub battlefield “The Tiger’s Loyal Subjects”:

  • Adjustments to the AI
  • Adjustments to damage taken from Critical Blows, the parameters for the increase/decrease of Spirit, etc.
  • Upward adjustment of the Morale Points acquired by players

Patch 1.04 just dropped and i see they've tweaked the difficulty of that cuntish 3 vs 1 side mission.

Added the option to return to the briefing screen before starting Co-op and the option to try the same battlefield again, to the screen that appears after completing a Co-op session.
Changed the player’s Morale Rank to 20 while at the base, the hidden village.

Still no lock-on switch following a parry? Shite!!

I'm no expert but that can't be a difficult thing to implement surely? If its already set-up to switch based on the melee attack action, why not allow the option to do it on a parry aswell!

I read that as it still needing a manual input to switch, which I was kinda doing anyway depending on the enemy that was closest to me. But the enemy closest to me changing every 1.5 seconds makes it a really shit way of dealing with something that should be simple. If it does it automatically though, magic!

After finishing and loving this, I finally picked up Nioh 2 expecting to love it based on a load of comments I read saying Wo Long wasn't as good, and it's just not grabbing me. It feels much slower, and stamina depletes like the lead has emphysema. I'll stick with it cos I paid £25 bloody quid for it, but bit sad.

NioH 2 is the most rewarding game you can imagine - the more you put in, the more it gives. Stick with it! The depth is insane. Some pointers here - the unofficial guide is really good. Make sure you’re using your soul cores plenty, they’re there to be used.

I've just tried to patch and looked through the settings menu, and it does *not* seem to let you automatically switch in the way you (and I) would like. There's an option to change target after an enemy dies but not on a deflect. I completed the 3 man mission post-patch but only mainly I was pretty overlevelled.

Yeah, that's what I expected to have to do in the absence of this parry auto-switch so the patch really doesnt seem to fix the real problem that the mission has. I guess its not worth their time to include it when for 90% of the game its not really necessary but it would be a great addition and add another level of flexibility to it all.

The AI is definitely changed though. I was able to get much more separation between the three of them than before, and the number of times you had two of them attacking you concurrently is noticeably less too.

There's some good QoL improvements in this patch. You can now select a different battlefield as a new fourth option on where to go next, rather than having to load into one and then pick another. I wish they'd extended that to the multiplayer. I want to be in a loop of responding, and it to go the that selection screen. Rather than having to wait for it load my previous battleground, use the flag, pick another.

What do the cups of cordiality do?

They increase your bond with your A.I. summons/companions. It takes around 6 cups to max out each character. Once you hit maximum bond you'll receive a copy of that characters 4* weapon and armour set (sometimes an accessory too). After that their gear will also be added to the loot pool.

Thanks. I’ve got a few sitting around to use.

Also, I tried using poison on Zhang Liao. Will it stop his electricity? It seemed to work once or twice but that was it. I even tried the big poison snake divine beast but it just did a bit of chip damage and didn’t seem to bother his electricity usage.

I think if the boss is imbued from a divine beast then their buffs won't be countered/cleared by the 5 phases. You can still use the phases to remove debuffs on yourself though.

Finished game a few nights ago - overall I enjoyed myself, only a few challenging bosses. This is fine for first playthrough, and normally with these games NG+ and DLC brings more difficulty. All the QoL changes in recent patch are great, and shows the team are listening to the player base and responding quickly - so quite possible this will have similar longevity as the Nioh games.

Lu Bu is a piece of work isn't he. Hardest boss since the first un.

Any tips?

It really is just a deflection game. If he hops into the air on his horse, time the deflect just after he starts descending. If he's off it and doing what looks like the same move, do it about a character length above your head. You need to wait a little later.

Horse ram, at a mid range you deflect just as (or maybe slightly before) his spear stops spinning. It's visually tricky to parse.

Learn a cheap and cheerful ice spell to quash his fire if he hits you with a red attack, otherwise you'll be cheerfully burning a long time as every hit will set you ablaze.

One of the worst attacks is his grab. You have to do it last second, timing's strict and it's easy to confuse with his other red thrust.

Use Quinglong (I think it's that one, the healing Divine spirit animal) to put down a nice little healing circle. You'll refresh quickly while inside it and you're essentially invincible against most bosses until it ends unless they kick you out.

Be sure to smack him a few times after each deflect, but don't get greedy. Your Y / Tri button will chip away his maximum spirit, making it easier to stagger him for the finisher. If he starts smashing you around and his spirit fills up, it'll start to expand the gauge again.

Finally, every time you do a finisher on him his morale's going to drop. Even if the fight's dragging out and he seems to be taking a ton of damage, he'll eventually start taking more and doing less.

A general tip for deflections: when an enemy primes their Critical Attack it's hard to miss the red indicator, but they'll also produce a red lens flare when you should actually press the button to deflect. So, if you're having trouble with a particular attack then looking out for that seconds flash will let you know the proper timing; if you can't react to the visual cue you'll at least be able to pre-empt it better the next time.

A more specific tip for Lu Bu:

Spoiler

You can douse his fire buff by using water wizardry, which disables some of his more annoying attacks.

The only problem with killing Lu Bu, is your drunken Friday night coop with randoms will be 100% Lu Bu requests.

And none of them understand it’s a slow grind and you need to bide your time.

I ended up pretty cheapily cheesing him (still had to do a lot of parrys) a few pages ago.

Just use the slab earth spell that makes spires (you can respec for free) and fatal blow when out

Yea, the other issue I see in that fight is when people haven’t found the flags. Trying to beat him with a level 16 moral is just a fools errand TBH.

@pledge yeah man, back to that side mission and did it first time. I was a couple levels higher and was using a +6 Soaring Ursine Mace but the enemy AI was fucking flacid compared to how it was pre-patch. I almost missed the relentless attacks coming from all angles and distances. I'm going completely against form with my weapons now, opting for slower Spears and Glaives unless its a multi enemy section, and its making encounters a lot more clinical. Well timed parries and boosted spirit attacks are now devastating on their own rather than being progressive in bringing an enemy down.

And done. Really enjoyed it, but glad it’s over. In other soulsbourne style games I’d be eyeing new game plus, but I’m ready to move on from this.

Other than bosses I don’t think it introduces any new enemies after the first few levels and the level settings are similar in tone (only the underground jail and boat levels felt different) as such it outstays its welcome be a few hours snd any desire to go back is drained. You’ve already fought the same enemies but harder. That’s the entire game really.

A quiet Sunday morning cuddling the cat… I decide to fire up Wo Long and I decimate Zhand Bao pretty swiftly. Nice, considering I’d only had one coffee!

BTW any time I sell an item with 2 or more stars, it asks me if I'm sure. Is there a reason I shouldn’t be? They’re not weapons I particularly gel with and can’t see me using. Do I get the opportunity to strip weapons later on, using the bits left over to upgrade what I’m using?

It asks you when you strip / salvage them too. You get so many weapon and armour drops that the chances are you'll wind up with multiple better versions of anything you scrap or sell soon enough.

From the blacksmith interface you can press the Options/Menu button to toggle what rarities prompt a warning, if any. It can also allow you to select all of a given rarity of gear for selling/dismantling.

To answer your actual question, though, yes you will be able to turn items into parts. Some items also have traits that you can extract and slot into others. However, by the end of the game I was swimming in materials and money, so I don't think it's anything you need to be that fussed about.

My general strategy early on was to sell one-star gear – as higher rarities don't seem to earn you more cash – dismantling everything else. Later in the game I was sitting on so much currency I'd just dismantle everything that wasn't four-star, then sort through what remained manually.
