Football thread 2022/23

Two of the three games were against Arsenal and Manchester City and we gave Arsenal a hell of a run for their money.

Cherry picking stats; but the table since Emery took over at Villa looks like this:

There are whispers of Europe, I can’t see it personally as we need too many other clubs to shit the bed.  I’m glad the club are aiming for it though, we are capable of hauling in Fulham and Brentford.  I figure Chelsea will have a run where they start winning a lot, but for us I’d like to see an improvement on the 55 points we earned under Dean Smith.  Currently on 38 with 11 games to play so it’s big ask, but Emery is picking up points at a rate where it’s on.

Europe isn't going to happen, it relies on us maintaining very good form to May and for other teams to go off the boil. It's too big an ask as you say. However I do think we can best Smith's best total. It's a big ask, but I fancy us to give anyone a game at the moment.

At the moment I'm still unnaturally annoyed we just can't get into the top half.

Leeds finally starting to show what they can do. Bloody tight in the last 12 though.

Ridiculous how close it is, 19th to 14th with one win, one point off 12th. No one's cut adrift yet. It's going to be a tight relegation battle

I’m still convinced it will be Southampton and Bournemouth, but the other spot I’m not sure - Forest maybe?

But, with so many teams in the mix then there are going to be a lot of 6 pointers coming up as teams play each other.

Those 2nd and 3rd goals (and the 4th sort of as they didn’t play to the whistle) Leeds scored made it look like Wolves wanted to keep things interesting by not trying to win and pull away a bit.

As soon as Fernandez got away with pushing the linesman the other day we all knew the next "hands on official" would be a red card.  Dumb twat Mitrovic.

I feel a bit sorry for Willian, who did try to tuck his hand in, but to no avail. But Mitrovic just fucking lost it and almost certainly cost his side any chance of progression.

He jumped in and punched the ball away! It's pretty much his fault that Fulham are down to 9 and had their manager sent off

Dan James to equalise, gotta happen.

Not sure if the "score against your old team" super power transfers across multiple transfer moves.

He jumped in with his arm tucked. It was a penalty, I've not disputed that, just that I'd argue he tried and failed rather than did his best Suarez.

Anyone else seen this madness?

Apparently for the goal that made it 2-1 there was a 17 MINUTE VAR review, the referee added an extra 30 and the second half lasted 87 minutes in total.

Found the highlights. Amazing that the match finished with all that water. Incredible sliding tackles.

It looks like a Man United / Man City FA Cup final!

City - almost certainly.

Man Utd are above us in the table but we aren't where we are by luck or over performing our xG. Their route is more difficult than City's.

I bet Chris Kavanagh was buzzing. How often in your career as a referee do you get to send three people off in as many minutes? It's like when Lewandowski scored five goals in nine minutes. It's a disgrace that Lee Dixon overlooked him for MOTM.

1-1 in the classico at half time. Early own goal for Madrid then Barca had most of the possession but no ideas - just the same aimless crosses from Raphinia that were headed clear. They got a good equaliser though. Decent enough match,

Mitrovic should get a season ban. You can't do that. It's a disgrace.

Great goal in the Classico by Kessie. But the game seems so flat and lacking in pizzazz compared to the games of yesteryear; still place for lots of snide fouls and a smattering of play acting.
