It’s sad the way it ended for Ozil as for a few seasons he was unplayable. He’d set you up better than a roast dinner before a day of heavy drinking. Mad to think he chose to torpedo his career rather than occasionally attempt to close his man down, the idle sod.

Ireland are at it again, settling into a comfortable 2-0 lead thanks to O'Dowda and Ferguson, then letting Latvia smash two goals in from range to level by half time.

Still not creating enough good opportunities, despite Smallbone's best efforts.

I feel like we're going to hear about how someone in the team was Mayo-esque cursed by a priest or a witch on the bus back to the hotel such is the extent of the frequency we concede absolute screamers at.

3-2 in the end, so at least Ireland are scoring goals for a change. Mikey Johnston, recently signed from Scotland FC, does seem like he might add something different in attack, particularly against the supposedly weaker teams. He'll open up a few opportunities for himself or others that won't come from passing the ball sideways for the fifteenth time. And Smallbone seemed very composed stepping up from the U21s, his cross for O'Dowda's goal was perfect.

Johnston deserved a goal for this alone, mind:

Those long range concessions though, they just seem like complacency, whether giving the ball away to give the other side a break and a bit of space, or just not closing down or clearing lines properly. It's like the workrate drops down to 60% or so when Ireland are the favourites, then when they do concede they start wondering what's going on.

Here we have an England "fan", heading to Naples for tonights match with his patriotic flag.

Now you may wince.  You may think that is in poor taste.  You may, in a surge of good conscience, try to warn the bloke about trying to display that in a city such as Naples.

However, said bloke is Jake Hepple, last seen claiming credit for the "White Lives Matter" banner that flew over the Etihad before a Man City/Burnley game.

And therefore, I fervently hope that he finds out just exactly why this is Not A Good Idea.

I do sort of enjoy these pudgy hooligans backing themselves when they go to places like Naples when their counterpart is likely to be a semi-professional MMA fighter with a GoPro on his head live-streaming the kicking he's administering.

Noteworthy for back to back terrible national anthem renditions so far. Feel sorry for the lady, seems something went wrong. The Italians have done a euro-party version of their own anthem. Awful.

I think this will be the most minutes Phillips has had all season.

65 minutes on the clock when they mentioned it.  I’ll be surprised if he’s subbed off.  Maguire only has 5 premier league starts this season!
