Thank fuck for that.

And so passes Gerrard's 'managerial' career.

I'm happy for you, because you have been one of the most miserable posters in this thread for ages. And I don't meant that as an insult, clearly the club means a lot to you and I get it.

Rather than who, what type of manager do you think can get the team working again?

We have to get someone with proven ability in a top league. The owners claim to want Europe, the stadium plans are all about improving the infrastructure and capacity to make the stadium international standard again, the aim this season always to have been top half minimum. As a result they have to load the deck in their hair and go get someone a strong record ah the top end of a good league.

We can't take a punt on a rookie with a hot streak at a lower standard. And if we go for someone who has a record of managing at the bottom (ie a Dyche for instance) the owners are basically saying they've given up.

Setting that aside, Gerrard is one of the most disastrous appointments in our history. He's taken the club backwards at a rate of knots, ripped up transfer strategies, eradicated good will that was built up by his predecessor...

What are you defining as proven ability though? Trophy winner? Consistent high league placings? European runs?

It’s going to be tough for Aston Villa getting Europe, even Conference league you need to finish 7th right? so above one of City/United/Lpool/Arse/Chelsea/Spurs and Newcastle, there’s also clubs like West Ham, Everton, Leeds, Leicester who will have the same ambitions as Villa

You have to try. We are one of the biggest clubs in the country and our owners are pretty damn rich - not quite blood soaked oil money nation state advertising machines rich, but we're owned by 2 billionaires. They've spent money, and seem prepared to spend more.

Neil Critchley who I assume will leave the club with Gerrard didn't make the greatest career move leaving Blackpool to go there. But the manager churn in the Championship is so high that I expect him to find a job again before Gerrard.

The worst bit might be the 'Villa fans surprisingly never warmed to him'. There's nothing surprising about it. He's got no connection to the club so it's not like we'd have a warm disposition to him from the get go, after his first month the performances were rubbish so never gained that support from having success, every time he opens his mouth he puts his foot in it, and his personality is horrible. Of course he wasn't warmly embraced.

This article on the BBC is one of the most fawning write-ups I've ever seen of a manager being sacked for being clearly totally out if his depth.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63339486

TBF it is written by Phil McNulty who somehow earns a living as the BBC's main football writer. He's as over-promoted as your average Conservative frontbencher.

It's basically 'he was a great player for Liverpool so why aren't these bitter villa fans warming to this charisma vacuum?'

Mystifying.

I think you are reading a lot into what was basically a bit of padding to make the article longer.

Winning 12 games and losing 18 will certainly get you sacked though! (Unless you are fighting relegation)

Wouldn’t have sacked him personally,, he was doing just great until the owners brought in CR7!

I was going to ask this in the Man U thread but as you mentioned it.  What do Man U fans (and anyone else who fancies commenting) think about the Ronaldo situation?

£500k a week, walks off before the game ends and basically not really performing for you.  Do you guys wish he never came back at all? Is he being disrespectful or do you agree with the idea that because he's been one of the best in the world he can do what he wants?

I think most of us would happily see him go in January. He clearly doesn't fit into ETH's system and we're much better without him. Sure he used to be one of the very best in the world but he isn't any more and has a shitty attitude.

We basically paid him 500k a week to not go to City.

Agreed.  Obviously not a Man U fan but from a fans point of view I do think it's one of those situations that is a bit sad to watch.

The media banging on about him like he's still 28 and the best in the world is ridiculous.  Everyone reaches their end and the fact no one came in for him in the summer should have made him realise he's not at the same standard he was.
