I haven’t looked at Spurs yet, but I remember we had 9 of our starting XI in the semi-finals in Russia in 2018. Trippier came back carrying an injury which he played with the whole of the next season, and Dele Alli never actually came back at all, having been replaced by a doppelganger who didn’t know how to play football at some point during the tournament.

 

I guess Kane, Son, Richarlison, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Davies, Romero and Lloris as definites barring injury, Dier as a probable, and Emerson Royal (inexplicably) as an outlier, so possibly 10 of our starting XI. This gives an advantage to teams who are knocking on the door in the league now, and have fewer starters going, especially if teams have a lot of players that end up going pretty far in the tournament. The final is on 18th December and the PL starts again on Boxing Day.

You can add Perisic to the definite starters too, he's been playing LWF for Croatia, so that's a full XI.

Kulusevski won't be going, and he's definitely a first XI Spurs player if fit.

 

Salah and Robertson won't be going from Liverpool.  Haaland and Mahrez from Man City.  Odegaard and Zinchenko from Arsenal.  Every member of Man Utd's outfield first team will be going, but De Gea and a few squad players won't be there.  Jorginho from Chelsea.  Isak definitely won't be going for Newcastle, although he's injured anyway, and in fact quite a few of their first team are unlikely to be selected for their national World Cup squads.

 

Advantage Newcastle?

Fuck yes, Benfica. Two late goals for them got them top, ahead of PSG, on away goals scored! The seventh tie breaker. Apparently PSG were wasting time, oblivious. 

 

Hopefully PSG get Bayern or someone equally hard, the fuckers.

To provide an excuse to bring in a system which tried to guarantee that the biggest clubs would get to the last 8.  They needed a reason to not have a free draw once out of the groups but before the quarter finals.

The England band leader has taken money from Qatar so expect to hear them incessantly during England games. 
 

 

The Russia World Cup was terrible for multiple reasons but they did do us the small mercy of briefly banning the band from the stadiums.

Eh? Talk of punching down is often mentioned on the forum and I just felt this was an example of it.

 

I don't think it's a good look for the band to lap up a freebie trip by any means, but in terms of sportswashing it just seems to be attacking the wrong target.

 

That said, the band are terrible and watching England games is bad enough as it is without them stinking the place up.

I don't think it's punching down at all. Never mind that the joke is that their incessant noise is an abuse of human rights in itself, I don't understand how I'm in some position of privilege relative to them.

 

No, they're not the largest target, should you be thinking that's what punching down is. But they're an acceptable one.

Damn right they are.  Given that there has been a widespread boycott by fans, the fact that Qatar are paying people to come and watch the games, giving the illusion of a successful tournament they are a perfectly valid target.  (Especially as the guy in charge of the band has an interesting history in the kind of people that he chooses to support.)

 

The Twitter thread in Off Topic mentioned something called the Trust Thermocline, the point at which customer trust in a product is pushed so far that it is broken irretrievably.  It rather feels that this World Cup may be that point for many football supporters.
