Did you upgrade your TV/monitor for the current gen?

I'm another that moved to the mighty 55" CX OLED.

Previous TV was a 720P 42" plasma that had served me well for many years, all the way through PS3, PS4 and early PS5 days.

I'm still impressed how good it looks. Horizon FW, even in performance mode is just jaw droppingly good.

Last upgrade was to a Panasonic 65DX902, and I see nothing to make an upgrade worthwhile. Next one will be an OLED, obvs, but only to a bigger screen (75”+).

An HDFury Arcana has given me eArc support (with no possibility for lag), and I have no need for anything more than 4K60 right now.

Out of interest what were the benefits of plasma, at the time? It’s a development I skipped entirely.

Much better black levels and motion iirc.

Which is why I went from plasma to OLED and not LED.

Are these the type of things that once you spend some time with them you realize they're a big jump, or is 1080p and a rock solid 60fps good enough?

I got a ultra wide curved monitor a year or two back, and now that I'm used to it it would probably be impossible to go back to a regular screen. Going from ultra wide back to "normal" would be like going back to those horrible square screens that used to be the norm.

At work we use two screens, but ultra wide is superior in every way.

Went from an older LG (non OLED) 47" to a 65" LG C9 OLED in the first year / summer of lockdown. Mainly as a treat when I changed jobs. No regrets whatsoever, it's amazing for games and movies and pairs wonderfully with the PS5 I got at launch and later a Series X. I also run an HDMI from my PC on occasion.

I've upgraded my monitor for high refresh rates and VRR but recently became a Dad last year and my son likes slapping my Samsung QLED so won't be upgrading for a while!

The monitor ended up being a bit of a waste though, it doesn't support PS5 VRR and honestly, I'm thinking of bowing out of the PC gaming side of things after struggling to get a modern videocard over the past two years. console have ended up being mode than sufficient for me!

Still on a 720p Panasonic plasma.

No upgrade yet because:

1. I rarely replace stuff that's still working perfectly well.

2. I don't want to lose my SCART socket! :(

I feel similar. I'm still on a 32" 720p LG I bought in 2009 for my Xbox 360.

I haven't yet invested into current gen so maybe I'll upgrade then? But I know I wouldn't want anything larger than 43" and if I'm getting a TV for gaming (mainly) I'll want the HDMI 2.1 spec - and that really limits options.

So until then I'll keep my old telly with its vast assortment of inputs.

As has been mentioned in the thread a few times now - there's a 42" version out since this year of that fancy LG OLED that everyone is so crazy over. It's exactly the same as its bigger siblings with all the fancy HDMI 2.1, VRR, and Dolby Vision gaming features the current gen uses. You have no excuses left, really :)

I recently moved from a Panasonic 42" 1080p Plasma to an LG 55" C1 4K OLED although not particularly for the new consoles, the C1 offers recently were just too good to refuse.

I'm using an Xbox Series S set to 1080p and a PS5 at 4K - there isn't a night and day difference between the resolutions but the image quality improvements are brilliant on both. I've also been streaming my PC games / emulators to the TV over moonlight, again at 1080p, and they look incredible. I definitely wouldn't upgrade just for 4K (and still haven't on my PC).

Yes. I think it'll go hand-in-hand with a next gen console. OLED TVs still seem mighty expensive to me though!

I also think as the generation continues we will start to see more midrange options with HDMI 2.1 to cater for bedroom use / monitors.

This. Wish more were of this mindset! So much e-waste these days from IMHO needless upgrading.

I bought a 4K monitor around 3/4 years ago. It's nice but only use 4K for my windows desktop. Generally run games at 1440p or 1080p because my GPU is aging a bit. PS5 looks nice on it though.

Was it worth it? Well it's was marginally more expensive than a none 4K screen at the time so future proofing a bit was a no brainer.

VR is more of a game changer than any TV upgrade TBH. And resolution doesn't even really come into that for me. It's the experience. Anyway....

How about if the old sets use way more power like my nuclear powered plasma? I haven’t replaced it yet and realised this evening that Amazons sale thing is coming up soon but surely an argument can me made for replacing old power hungry screens with newer more efficient ones?

Indeed. Although TBH plasmas were always power hungry monsters. So suppose depends on what the priories were when it was bought?! Still think swapping stuff when it's functionally working is probably worse that the amount of energy something uses daily....

No right or wrong really I guess. But all our choices and decisions collectively have an impact. Part of the reason never went for a plasma screen was the power consumption and the potential limited life span of the panel itself. OLED screens are great though. Best of both worlds however guess they weren't  about when plasmas had the best contrast and brightness properties.

Personally I just stick with something I've invested with until it breaks or recycle it by selling it on.

Yeah, it's a fair point :)

I was surprised how much energy mine was using but also surprised no one else mentioned it either.

When I got my first plasma it was just me in a flat, now I have kids and loads of xboxes etc and with energy prices as they are now it's something I've thought about more I guess. They still have a good picture, great motion and really black blacks. It's just a shame they use so much and heat up the house

I wonder out of interest how much energy the average plasma screen uses? How long would you need to use the plasma before a new OLED screen would actually pay for itself in terms of money saved in energy. My guess it would be a fair while :)

https://www.batteryequivalents.com/off-the-grid-how-many-watts-does-a-tv-use.html

Wow the average 55" plasma uses 370watts.. so around one unit of electricity ever 2 hours..  at an average of 28p per KWh (current prices) over a year with around 4 hours use every day....

Plasma

Usage kw per day = 1.4 * 365 = 511KWh = £151

OLED

Usage kw per day = 392 * 365 = 143 KWh = £43

Yep quick calculation shows around £100 on a 55" screen OLED vs Plasma. Wow. Of course these are all average power usages but striking.

Think the main take away for me is the damage to environment TBH which you can't put a price on. However it would be interesting to then work out how much in terms of environmental damage it does to make a new TV vs using an old one to end of life.

Edit currently reading this David Attenborough book and feeling very humbled and guilty at the same time. Although I did ponder how much environmental damage his book has actually done! It was in a sale so perhaps I should have bought the e-book :) it goes on...

My 50" Panasonic Plasma says 505w in the specs in the manual!

When I bought a Series X I also purchased a Samsung QN 94a.

The resolution bump is nice but like others have said it is the HDR that blows your mind. I game in a very bright room and the Samsung has the power to just push through the brightness of the room and still provide a great picture plus I appreciate the extra efforts they made to reduce screen reflections and glare.

Bonkers, but still slightly less bonkers than my flatmate who is using a PS4 on a cheap, probably fifteen years old at this point, LCD. My family were getting rid of a quality 1080p LED which I offered but he declined, much to my bafflement.

Ooh, this is apparently me. I mean, not literally me, but a friend gave me this TV (a 720p 26in LCD from 2007) back in 2015 and I'm still using it.

I'll probably go straight from that to some mindblowing 4K OLED next year and see if it changes my life.

Went from a very early 43” LG 4K, which preceded the industry standards like HDR, to a Samsung QN94a 50”. Was waiting for the C1 to get down to a decent price, but the Samsung was ridiculous value, down from £1100 to £749, and then got the £150 cashback deal on top of that, so nearly half price, plus my son leaves Youtube on pause for hours so was a bit nervous about OLED.

Huge difference in the display quality though, a massive step up.
