Did you upgrade your TV/monitor for the current gen?

I didnt buy an oled for this exact reason. There have many times when I feel like that was justified. 250 hours of Elden Ring , 200 hours of snowrunner etc….

They also lose some brightness over time.
The way I thought about it was ….in 7 years time when the tv is kinda old will I suddenly notice something I can’t stop noticing forcing me to upgrade but perhaps I’m not in a position to upgrade or just don’t want to.

I’m well over 250 hours of Fortnite with no issues and way more hours on that, destiny, Battlefield and COD. On my older gen OLED (B8) with no issues. The brightness thing is as overplayed as it was on plasma, you will have long replaced it before it was a concern.

Each to their own and I think there are reasons to dismiss an OLED but these days retention isnt a worry.

The hours of something don't matter. It's how many hours you have a static element up on a screen that doesn't change. Bascially, it is hard to get burn in. You have to basically have your TV running the exact same logo or hud for hours or end never changing it.

I buy a tv every 10 years personally.

I use a 32” 1080p TV for Switch, Series S and Roku streaming. Everything looks good but I often think about upgrading to take full advantage of the PS5 (when I get one) and when I eventually upgrade to a Series X.

One thing I’ve found though is that in the 32” Screen size you just can’t seem to get the more advanced Display technology, resolutions and formats.  In theory, they should be able be make a TV in that size that can do 4K, HDR, etc, but I suspect that they don’t because there just isn’t a market for it and at that size you don’t get the full benefits anyway.  I did consider getting a monitor instead but the fact that there are certain things that are taken for granted in TV’s but not in monitors put me off.

A larger set would solve that problem and I have had my eye on the LG OLED’s but the size put me off.  I only sit about 4ft in front of the screen so I don’t want it to be too big.

But at the end of the year, I’m moving house and one thing I’ve been sure to do is set aside a gaming space that either the 48” LG C1 or 42” LG C2 will fit perfectly into.

This thread has helped me decide not to upgrade my 1200p pc monitor or 1080p TV.

Great as they clearly are an LG OLED TV isn't on the menu due to size and price (not that I think they're overpriced for what they are, it's just far more than I want to spend on a screen).

A more modest upgrade to a cheaper 144hz/1440p/4k monitor just doesn't really seem like a massive leap in terms of the experience for my use case/the type of stuff I play, and chasing ultra high framerates/resolutions would put me back on the "need to upgrade PC again" treadmill much sooner.

Well, I lied. I recently bought a 165hz 1440p gsync monitor and it makes a noticeable difference. I've never really been impressed by the ones on display in shops but now I'm wondering if those demos were even running at 1440p/a framerate above 60 because the difference on my PC is immediately noticeable. Also the picture quality is definitely good enough for me. It isn't OLED quality but it has its own charms.

I sit about 80cm away from a 48” OLED as one of my PC displays. It’s fine, you quickly get used to it!

To my delight sadness, our main room TV got bust so I was able to shunt the games room TV into there and replace it with a 65" LG 4K HDR VRR 120Hz. Yowza!

My observations:

The indifferent:

Always curious about what 120Hz would bring to the party. In truth, I can't really perceive the difference (30->60 is night and day to me). Maybe this is for the best as I won't have to angst over performance and fidelity modes.

4K.. well it's good, but still somewhat underwhelming. Can't say it's going to make a material difference to my gaming.

VRR I haven't really tried yet. 40 Hz modes might be something I am interested in too.

The good:

Great picture quality

65" is a good size compared to 50". My eyes aren't what they were, so this helps with the small text some games have.

HDR is very apparent. Wow, things are so colourful (and BRIGHT). I don't know that's it's more realistic or whatever but it's GREAT.

The ugly:

I didn't get an OLED due to cost, wasn't quite prepared for scale of the backlight bleeding. Disappointing. Not noticeable in normal usage, just black loading screens or whatever, but it irks.

This is surprising to me. As I said above I recently went from a 1080p 60hz monitor to a 1440p 165hz gsync monitor and I think the jump from 60 to 165 hits as hard as 30fps to 60fps for me. 60 feels noticeably smoother than 30 (which is just bad) but 165 is just so buttery smooth and natural looking it's on another level to 60. Currently playing through GTA 5 and the smoothness at 165 just makes it feel like a completely different (better) experience.

I'm actually shocked by how big an upgrade both 1080p to 1440p and 60hz to 165hz feel like. I've been reading people downplay them both as relatively minor improvements for a few years so I wasn't in any hurry to upgrade my monitor, but now that I have I think they're both massively noticeable improvements (the increased refresh rate in particular is a genuine gamechanger for me).

Yeah I had been expecting great things, but my poor old eyeballs must top out at 60 (much like my car). I did only try two games, Tony Hawks and CoD, so maybe there are better exemplars out there.
