Hive Mind Award

Awarded to the person or persons who's 20 voted games made it into the final top 20.

And the clear winner and most SUBSERVIANT TO THE WILL OF THE COLLECTIVE was

@The Fox - with 13 votes hitting the top 20

What can I say? I am a basic bitch at heart.

Booby Prize

Games that missed out on the top 100 because of rule breaches:

Shenmue

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Games that could have also potentially missed out big time if discrepancies hadn't been spotted:

Um excuse me but the Wikipedia heading for this game is just 'Yoshi's Island' :quote:

It’s wonderful you have done this Benny, and I have loved reading the list, but I am genuinely interested in why the name rules had to be so strictly imposed? Could your algorithm not have easily been adapted to search for any entries with the word Yoshi in the title etc, and then combine the scores for all name variations? I mean, it would just make sense to have the list have reflected people’s intentions is all.

"Easily".

Are all games with Yoshi in the title the same game? What about Mario?

Clear instructions were provided. Very simple really. Go to Wikipedia. Find game. Copy name. This is the definition of easy. The automated disambiguation of varied titles is not easy given the set of target options is not know.

I think you have misunderstood my intention. I was not trying to imply it could be easily done, I was asking if it could be easily done.

As someone whose job involves data cleansing (and, for two years, was focussed on it as a Data Quality Analyst): no, it's extremely not easy to automate safely or reliably.* Manual intervention is the only "easy" way to deal with this sort of free text, and it's entirely reasonable to not want to collate every entry and then map it to its correct version manually if it isn't your job!

*per @thesnwmn's post, for one thing you have to identify every error in the first place — so for all the hundreds of games entered you have to discern which might be duplicated, then build in rules to pick them out and merge them. And the moment you get lazy enact a rule like "all games with Yoshi in the title are Yoshi's Island" is the moment you end up overcounting thanks to any Yoshi's Story/Yoshi's Crafted World entries, etc. Data cleansing is onerous work.

Ah right. It didn't read like that.

So the short answer is no. That  it cannot be easily achieved :)

No worries - reading it back I can see how it could have come across like that. I was just curious if it was a technical difficulty with adapting the algorithm (which it seems it is) or there was some other reason for it.

In any case, I entered ‘Yoshi’s Island’ correctly!

Moving on, does anyone have any predictions for how this might change by the next time we do it? I expect Elden Ring to fall a bit as time goes on and it’s less zeitgeisty, and would expect Returnal to be significantly higher (too 20) as more people play it.

Simple: the rules were there to make sure I could collate all the votes together algorithmically. If I hadn't done it that way, I would have had to spend more time painstakingly entering every vote manually by hand, and if I had done that I would have had very little free time to actually do the part I wanted to do: writing.

I didn't have time to make a more complex algorithm.

It put the onus on the voters to get it right, which only required a few minutes of extra effort to avoid errors. So it was up to them to get it right for the sake of a few minutes to save me hours :coffee:

The fact there were actually so few errors was a minor miracle. Hence a very short "booby prize" list

DEVIANT AWARD

@SeanR, @ScouserInExile and @Cheyenne were the members who exhibited the most divergent thoughts that MUST BE CRUSHED with 0 voted games in the top 20.

As much as I've enjoyed the write-ups, I've been finding the overrall top 100 fairly rote and uninspiring. Feels weirdly nice to be kinda called out on it.

The thing I've found odd, but probably understandable in quite a small data set, is the number of older games going up in the rankings.

I don't know if they've got actually better & compare more favourably to newer games since the last vote, or the pull of nostalgia and rose tinted specs for an ageing group of gamers increases over time.
