Yeah, I had a brief runthrough and trying to genre-fy everything was just a nightmare. Is Majora's Mask an Action-Adventure (like every other Zelda), or a Puzzle, or a straight up Adventure? Is Metroidvania distinct from general Action-Adventures; if so are the Souls games Metroidvanias, if so should Zelda-likes also be their own distinct category? Is Metroid Prime an FPS, a Metroidvania, or something else? Is Rez a Music game, an Action game, or do we need a dedicated Into-The-Screen Shooter classification? Do we need a Minigames genre? If so, is Rhythm Tengoku Minigames or Music? If not, how do we classify Warioware?

And so on.

In the end, I came up with the only inarguable, objective classification system, and came up with the following:

In the Top 100 there are 67 good games, 23 meh games, and 8 bad games (plus 2 games I've not played). In the Top 200 there are 138 good games, 39 meh games, 15 bad games (and 6 games I've not played).

Good, Meh, Bad and ???, the only genres worth caring about.

I've never played an OutRun game. OutRun 2 is in position 23 on the list. Is there an easy way to play a good version of this nowadays? From what I understand, there's officially just the Arcade version and then the port to the original Xbox, which is apparently backwards compatible, but can no longer be bought digitally. If I buy an old disc version of the Xbox port, can I run it on my Series X, or is it severely compromised compared with the original arcade cab version?

Good, Meh, Bad and ??? are also just about the most subjective things you can get.
Although I am reading "obective" as facetious.

That is indeed the joke, yes.

(see also: the flare [or whatever they're called] under my pronouns)

I would hope that every game in the list is "good" to at least some people here (unless anyone was playing a very long joke with their votes)!

I don’t think the Xbox port was vastly different. It will certainly suffice if you’re not familiar with the arcade version to begin with.

The sequel, Outrun 2 Coast 2 Coast plays very similarly (with extra modes and different courses) and is available on PS2, PSP, PC and Xbox.
You can’t go wrong with either really.

C2C on PC is what I play - you may have to jump through compatibility hoops to get it to play nice with your PC, but it's possible. Playing the PSP game via emulation (I recommend PPSSPP) is also pretty good, and probably the least amount of hassle compared to PS2/Xbox emulation.

Between the original, C2C and Online Arcade, I think that C2C is the most "fully featured" - but the original had little things like bonus tracks that weren't used in other games.

Thanks. It appears that it's no longer available on Steam because of some licensing issue, and I don't think you can buy it from the Xbox marketplace, either. I'd quite like to play it on Steam Deck, so I guess for that I have to get up to some emulating shenanigans...

Benny did you do a breakdown by game genre? I'd be curious to see how many e.g. shmups made it in to the list

Genre is so subjective I'm not sure there's much value in it. Just check the top 100 and pick the games that fit an arbitrary definition I guess.

What have I started?? I take it all back. I just wanted to know how many shmups and platformers made it into the top100. I didn't mean to start some categorisation challenge.

Although, now the genie is out, I was wondering whether instead of exclusive categories, maybe tags would be more suited. A game can have any number of tags, e.g. Isaac could be tagged as both Roguelike and Shmup. That way, there's no need to decide which category a game fits into.

I've had a quick go too but yeah I can see why this seemed like a bad idea.

35 "action adventure" (ugh)

14 RPGs

12 shooters (10 fps, 2 shmup)

9 platformers (5 2D, 4 3D)

8 puzzle
7 racing

5 fighting (3 "scrolling", 2 1-on-1)
4 rhythm action
3 strategy

1 minigame collection
1 creaty sandbox game
1 game where you talk to animals on an island

You know, I've been thinking about the categorisation some more, and while I think (outside of the 'multiple tags' option, which is quite viable, assuming anyone fancies coding up a quick database) it's largely a fool's errand, it did make me consider more the specific question I raised of 'should Metroidvania be its own genre?' — to which I think the answer is a resounding yes.

After all, it's widely acknowledged that the whole 'soulslike' subgenre is itself a form of Metroidvania, as it features the key 'semi-open world that you explore and expand your access to via the accrual of key items and/or abilities and/or traversing one-way sections to unlock previously closed access points' (distinct from JRPGs, which are similar, but usually feature an overworld or hub-world and generally lock progression via story, rather than key items/abilities).

So with that in mind, here's the top 20, correctly categorised:

20 Portal Puzzle

19 Mario Odyssey Platformer

18 Mario 64 JRPG

17 Final Fantasy VII JRPG

16 The Last of Us Stealth

15 Half Life 2 FPS

14 Mario Kart 8 Racing

13 Mario Galaxy JRPG

12 Ocarina of Time Metroidvania

11 Metroid Prime Metroidvania

10 Mass Effect 2 RPG

9 Link to the Past Metroidvania

8 Rez Rez

7 Dark Souls Metroidvania

6 Super Mario World JRPG

5 Bloodborne Metroidvania

4 Halo FPS

3 Elden Ring Metroidvania

2 Resident Evil 4 Metroidvania

1 Breath of the Wild Metroidvania

So that's your top 20: 8 Metroidvanias (6 in the top 10), 4 JRPGs, 2 FPS's, 1 RPG, 1 racing, 1 stealth, 1 puzzle, 1 platformer and 1 Rez. Although Mario 64, Galaxy and SMW could arguably be Metroidvanias rather than JRPGs, as though featuring over/hub-worlds, progression is based on the accrual of key items of a sort, rather than simple linear story advancement. And, well, Demon's Souls has a hub, and it's definitely a Metroidvania rather than a JRPG, so...
