HYENAS - Creative Assembly's new sci-fi FPS

So this is what they've been working on for a while then.  Fortnite meets Apex meets Tarkov-lite - hooks being zero-G gameplay and collectable 'merch' which I suppose is their monetisation and crossover/collaboration vehicle.  Not my cup of tea, and entering a competitive market - related, Yager (The Cycle) probably just shit themselves seeing this, but I doubt the other creators of similar stuff have.

I'm not that interested in MP shooters, but that looks pretty cool - I like the style, zero-G combat hasn't been done often enough, and the Prey-style GLOO gun looked like it could make for some interesting dynamics. Shame there isn't a single-player mode - I'm getting flashbacks to Brink, and the crying shame that you never really got to explore that world - but that looks quite stylish, and potentially fun.

they went for the Alberto Mielgo/Spiderverse look innit.  they pretty much admitted ripping him off in some interview stuff on the IGN show where they decided to reveal the game.

but yeah, a woefully executed reveal of a new FPS GaaS, whose owners have been hyping behind the scenes for a while now.

they just didn't plan or execute well enough, from the perspective of customer experience;

- the animation frame rate in the video didn't align with FPS players' wishes, but at least the devs got across their ooh cool art direction!

- the principle communication material aka trailer doesn't do enough to message gameplay experience/core gameplay loop, but at least it's snappy which is what sales people like!

- IGN's audience profile didn't align with that which the game itself seems aimed at, but at least the studio and PRs had an easier time getting it out there!

- the interview content was pretty cringe too, but at least the devs got themselves on camera - hi mum!

- the name isn’t very SEO-friendly/ownable, also, doesn't trip off the tongue that well.  i get the thinking behind the name but I don't think they did enough to explore a naming solution, following their setting the strategy behind it (given assumed intended audience).

- the 2d branding elements like logo, hyena icon and other flourishes etc., don’t look like they have that much work put into them and come across as cheap looking.  them going for a rebellious graffiti tone & manner doesn’t excuse this I don’t think.  compared with the equivalents from overwatch it’s like night and day and you can tell which of the two is the prestige/go-to product.

sorry I've gone off on one a bit there!  and appreciate some points being at least warm takes.

As a very big Alien Isolation fan, I got very excited by the thread title.

This is not that.

As a rule I’m not interested in online games, and this does feel like Creative Assembly having been sent down the F2P arena shooter mines by Sega, but, maybe it’ll be fun?

I mean, it might play amazingly but it'll have fly out of the blocks to make any kind of impact in a very crowded market. This is like when Housemarque were making that PUBG-alike that I don't even think got released in the end.

Same creative director though - but yes there would have been some staff changes over the years.

An impression I have of CA is that they see themselves as some proper AAA industry-leading studio - and while, sure, they have put out some good games, I don't think there's any project in their history to warrant such posturing.  So to your second sentence more specifically, I can see what I assume as self-perception driving desire to have the next big game, also, market forces + SEGA pushing them to do something GaaSy/trendy/evergreen, especially following Alan's quality:sales ratio/ROI.

Is it just me who is getting a little bit bored of games with a fun/crazy/cool/lively gang? Should be a game where it's just a team of dull awkward people.

I want a shooter with all middle aged stressed people. The key twist is that whichever characters from the roster are available per match is randomised because they might have to work late or take the kid to hospital or meet the in-laws or take the car for an MOT.

Why is the trailer so janky-looking anyway? There's a bit where a character is doing a roll or whatever and instead of looking cool it's so stiffly animated and slow, like the tricks in a skateboarding game that wasn't Tony Hawk on ps2.

they've aped Alberto Mielgo/Spiderverse's 'cool' style to try and differentiate, not thinking that that the audience for FPS games is looking for smooth & high frame rate action ref gameplay experience
