Well the time for the leather jacket lord approaches again later this year and likely around September for the flagship card/s.

 

For anyone who recalls the horror of the last release, see this journal of frustrated nerds:

 

 

Interesting things about the rumours so far.

 

1: In a time of rising energy costs, Jensen has ensured the 40 series of cards will likely be quite power hungry ranging between 400-450 watt rumours for the 4090 and 4080 (which is weird because of point 2)

 

2: If you remember when the 3090 launched, it was laughably poor value in comparison to the 3080 (RRP wise £649 vs £1399) for roughly a 10-15 percent performance diff 

 

 

Now the 4090 appears to earn being a step up if those numbers above are anywhere near accurate. It will still be blindingly expensive, think around £1500 ish again, but at least it should be significantly ahead of the 3080 to earn that

 

The 3080 seems like a damp fart in comparison of an upgrade (but still appears almost as power hungry which makes no sense), if its priced near the OG 3080 RRP, I might try and upgrade for the additional powah and extra rumoured 6GB of video memory which apparently might be downgraded to GDDR6 as opposed to the X on the 3080. 

 

Basically it looks like they're going to make the 80 series kinda weak (relatively) to the 90 compared to last time where the 80 made the 90 kinda redundant to most enthusiasts. 

 

Apparently there is an excess of 30 series stock in the market so except a dumping of GPUs at RRP or less nearest to release

 

Hopefully with mining on the collapse, stock won't be as insane to find as last time but expect 20 series price gouging instead of 30 series RRP benevolence that only a lucky few got to enjoy.

 

Is anyone else gonna try and upgrade? I might not go for the top card but I like upgrading every two years to stay bleeding edge. Part of me is the fun of selling my GPU early and then struggling to get another one and being a console BOI for a few months. I have a steam deck this time so DONT CARE

I’ll be interested to see them of course, but considering the 30** cards are significantly stepping up to the plate over the current consoles in terms of rays and all that fun stuff I honestly can’t see them being used to anywhere near their full potential.

 

I mean, obviously I’ll end up buying one because I’m an idiot, but there we go

I was replaying Cyberpunk 2077 recently and in my first playthrough I was in awe of the world so prob didn't care about the perf, but I want a card that can do 60 fps, DLSS perf or above, psycho raytracing and everything else pushed to max. The 3080 has drops, its still mostly smooth, but I'd rather it be buttah. Yeah I could turn down the raytracing from psycho to ultra, but WHY SHOULD I

I have a 3060 and have toyed with upgrading in the last couple of months but held off the temptation so I'll almost certainly be buying a new card and letting my son have the 3060.

My trusty* old 980m gaming laptop is reaching the end of its life and now I have an office space I think it's time to build a proper pc again, hoping this means I can pick up something not-bleeding-edge for a reasonable price from someone upgrading.

If there's stock available and the power requirements aren't stupid I could be tempted by a 4070 if it's a significant step up from a 3070 for a semi reasonable price, but we'll see nearer the time. I feel no need to constantly be bleeding edge, but gaming is my main hobby so I don't mind investing in it. Not like I'm out golfing and drinking every weekend right?

Same here, my 3070FE has been a great card for me and I don't see that a theoretical 20% increase will be worth whatever premium that add to it, and I'm never going to go for the 4090.

Same here, not an FE but a 3070 - does the job as I'm on mostly last-gen games still, and even then I look to use less power not more where possible. Sure this'll do me for a while.

 

Besides which I'd probably need a new PSU to go with the card.

If the 50xx series can do more with less, that'd be good.

110% going all in on these. Top or second from top card, 13900K, new mobo and PSU and maybe some DDR5 RAM. My 2080TI and 9900K have served me well for several years, it went from a meme card to a pretty decent purchase at some point. A little overclock and I can go all the way up in settings at 4K 60 for 90% of games, RT and all.

 

Will punt some of my 3060 bedroom bits and swap the parts above in. 60FPS in the bedroom and 120* in the living room. Oorah!

 

*Yeah, that still won't be possible most of the time, maybe by the 5 series?

Of course. 90 card for me this time, though.

 

The 3080FE is getting absolutely bodied by Skyrim at 1440p thanks to Skyrim not having any DLSS and doing everything brute-force. Simulated ray-tracing, diffuse lighting, and enhanced volumetric lighting, rays and shadows sometimes makes it look more realistic than CP2077. It's absolutely fucking spectacular. Unfortunately it's suffering drastically in the denser forested areas.

I'm out for this generation of cards - the 3080 is already too much of a power-hungry thermal generator, and that's been superseded in my life by less powerful hardware because it's far more quiet.

 

Always happy to hear what becomes of the budget options this generation, mind - I'm guessing they'll throw off the 16-series monicker and tout actual ray tracing chops this time around.

I have a 2070S at the moment. If the power consumption of the new cards means replacing a 750w PSU, then I doubt I could be bothered to do that. Might pick up a 3070 or 3070ti, in that case.

They already seem to have done that with the 3000 series, there is nothing lower than the RTX 3050 currently on desktop.

 

The power requirements going up seems an inevitable consequence of Moore's Law being effectively dead.

 

You want more perceptible performance? Pay more and pump more watts into the chip to achieve it.
