Their lineup is going to be a shambles if they launch a 4070Ti straight off the bat (when are the normal 4060/70s meant to launch?)

 

Curious as to what they do with the price point, too, because they made a rod for their own backs now with this botched card. If they keep it at $900 then nobody will want it; if they reduce it it'll show just how much they are fleecing people with current prices.

 

It's all a bit of a mess really.

It still blows my mind that the 3080 released at $699 and 2years later the 4080 is set to launch at $1,199. Nvidia wants to increase the price of the 80 series by $500!

 

That is not even the craziest thing though, the craziest thing is people will line up to buy them then moan on the internet about how expensive GPUs have become.

I wouldn't buy the 80. Its a dud. 

 

So, my way of thinking of buying something like this is that in two or so years time or whenever the next big thing comes out I'll sell off this card for around the £1000-mark (or something similar). So, in effect what's left of £600 divided by 24 months (there or there abouts), which is £30-odd a month for the two years. £30 a month is reasonable to me considering I use this machine every day I'm alive - not just to game, but to do all my work on and obviously copious amounts of pornography.

 

I think that's a fairly reasonable thing to do. 

 

Seeing as I've got friends how spend upwards of £200-£300 a month just on cigarettes for god's sake, aside from worrying about the cable going bang and burning my house down, I still think having a 4090 in my life is better for my health.

 

Yay for dubious justifications of financial worth!

Oh for sure! Essentially, I think that the only decent new card nVidia have got is the 4090. I think for everything else I'd stick with the 30xx series. If I was still using a 1440p screen, I'd not even have considered upgrading.

I do wonder how many people were able to buy a 3080 at nVidia's original rrp though? As fantastic a price as it was, I'm guessing the majority of people who bought a 3080 paid considerably more for it than that. Doesn't make the price rise any more palatable I'm sure, but if - if - prices on the 4080 series have a vague amount of parity throughout its life-span, then perhaps it won't be quite as egregious?

 

Edit: but we all have the choice. There's clearly no real need to buy any of these cards at all! We can get our fill of AAA games on consoles and play them perfectly well. We can buy a 'lower' tier GPU and play everything else perfectly adequately on our PCs should we want to as well. I think the issue is even seeing the 4080/90 etc as vital to a gaming life is probably unwise and thoroughly unnecessary. 

 

I do it because I love this sort of stuff, and I love eking out as much performance from my games as I can - I think I enjoy that part of the 'hobby' more than actually playing the games themselves most of the time!

Yes but the overwhelming feeling even from enthusiasts who will buy the 4090 is that the 80 is a dumb product. No one fits the description of complaining about the 4080 but intending to buy it anyway. It's £1200-£1500 for 4080 cards in the UK. If you're spending that much, you're buying a 4090. If you're not, you're not buying it as its priced out of the budget of that market. AMD just made it even dumber as a bonus while making the 4090 no less desirable. And obviously you saw what happened with the 12GB.

 

Nvidia will send the 4080 out as a card that desperate people who want a 4090 but can't get hold of one (not that many) as an interim card. Which is a niche of a niche market. Then they will drop the price at some point to actually sell the thing and not just drive all sales to the 4090 but certainly there is no one that I can see who wants the 80 let alone buying one.

It's all a bit of a mess really. 

 

It's going to compete against the AMD products and at that price, AMD starts looking pretty good against a significantly cutdown half-sized die.

 

Lower end parts have been seeing ever greater delayed launches compared to the flagship parts for a while, and given the glut of existing parts, you could easily see Nvidia decide to continue selling RTX 3070 and lower parts for quite a while yet while they wait for yields to improve.

 

They've apparently slowed production of RTX 4090 already anyway as the chips are better used for higher margin data centre products instead of being given away at a knockdown price to consumers, even if people think the price is too high.

So, I'm assuming we're getting 4080 reviews today some time? I think the release date is tomorrow for it. I'm always intrigued to see how these things fare!

 

In other news, if you haven't already it's definitely worth booting up Control and watching this run on a 4090 at 4k. It kind of laughs in the face of everything that's going on, and positively spits on you should you be daft enough to use DLSS. 

 

It needs no DLSS to run at bonkers-hrz fps.


Very impressive indeed.

Yeah, this is me at the moment. I have a 3080 and am curious about the 4090, but I'm still on a 1440p screen. Can't really see any benefits until I go 4k.

I think outside of a 4k 120hz plus screen (or equiv res heavy ultra wide like those 49 inch ones) there is no viable 4090 use. 3080 is plenty for 1440p

 

4080 reviews aren't surprising. Good card. Shit price. It's so within spitting distance of the 90 price wise it's made itself irrelevant

Depends on what you mean by small. It's over 30cm long, 10cm tall and 6cm wide.

 

I think the answer is probably no once you take into account the power and cooling requirements around it. Doesn't necessarily need to be flashy but it needs a fair amount of room. So an assuming mid tower I guess.

It will require a bit of work to make things fit nicely, but it's clearly doable!

Yes, the 4080 has pretty low power draw and over engineered cooling so would work in a SFF case

I had no idea it was all metal, I assumed it was just plastic. Build quality feels super luxe!

 

How do I switch it on tho? I can see the HDMI to the telly but I don't see an on switch or where to plug in the kettle plug.
