Architecture and age have a huge impact too. If your CPU is several gens old a refresh is always great for frame times and consistency. Often the latest i5 trumps the i9 from the last gen and I'm sure similarly for Ryzen. If your cpu is a few years old, an upgrade is always a good idea. Point is you don't need to spend the £400-500+ for the top chips.

Unless something fundamental happens in the next year or so I doubt I'll be replacing my 5950x anytime soon...the thought of having to do the triple whammy of cpu, mobo and memory appalls me.

Cablemod's angled adapters for the 12vhpwr cables are finally on sale. Is the day near when I can finally close the sidepanel on my PC? Well no, I want to wait for reviews and impressions first that the things don't explode

But still, neat https://store.cablemod.com/12vhpwr-angled-adapter/

I bought one.

Expensive as fuck for £50 delivered but given the cost of the 4090 seems fine just to not have the adaptor smushed against my glass case on the Lian Li O11-D

What do you guys use to control your GPU's fans? I've tried fiddling about with the custom fan curves in Afterburner, but I can't have set it up correctly because my 4070Ti still whirrs up and down like a bastard. I don't mind hearing the fan noise if I'm pushing it, so long as it's consistent - the constant fluctuations are what make it annoying.

Also, what's the hottest you'd recommend your GPU getting? 70 degrees Celsius plus sounds like a lot, but is it actually?

I'm not using it to control my GPU fans at the moment, but you can create a fan 'curve' and then assign the GPU fans to it.

Just had a play around and this is how you'd do it...

  • Add a new "Graph" fan curve
  • Change the temperature source to "GPU"
  • Click EDIT to create a fan curve that you'd like
  • For each fan, click the toggle and then choose the new GPU curve that you created

It's amusing how stupid the 4090 is that people are coming up with ever more inefficient things to actually attempt to push it into taxing their electricity bills properly and justify the purchase

The whole point in buying a GPU like this isn't to actually play demanding modern games, it's to play old games on it and enjoy feeling like you are murdering them 1000 times over with your extra power.

Speaking of, I'm going to start playing Thief this weekend. Path tracing on that would be lovely jubbly

You'll need a legal copy of the original Half Life to play it.

If you haven't got a legal copy you have no place in this thread!1 ;)

God, don't make me play it...again...ok then! :)

You’re not wrong but I’m so happy with mine. Happier than I have been with any GPU in a very long time. The cost is absurd but I seem to have a mental block where PC parts for gaming performance are concerned. I drive a shit car worth a lot less than my GPU for example haha.

Path traced half life 1 is good fun incidentally, seeing Gordon’s shadow and reflection is great.

Considering I don't even have an aerial plugged into my living room TV and I watch all my content on that via my 4090, this is pretty cool news for me.

I take it any RTX card will do this? Bedroom is basically the same setup, no aerial just the 4K TV from a 3060.

I don't even newsgroups/torrent anymore. Just watch swag via the browser. Sometimes I settle on stuff at 720p for the convenience. In fact, I'm watching Locke now, in browser at 720p. A no hassle upscale for a lazy potatoes me would be awesome. Big stuff, blockbusters etc, I'll spend mooching time on a 4K viewing but the amount of shit I'll happily watch in 720p is, well, a lot.

This gonna be good.

The nvidia pay train keeps on giving. Even AI can upres my 720p meme videos now.

People can keep laughing up the cost of the 4090 (which I don't regret one bit) but I'll keep using a 200 quid Oppo android phone for years until it breaks instead of the latest idrone!!! Maybe buy less of the same phone every year and get actual high end tech losahs!!!

Hmm! Looking into it, it's ok, not as pronounced as the Nvidia example.

Made sure I have the latest Chrome/Edge browsers, ticked Super resolution and level 4 in Nvidia Control Panel, enabled high GPU usage for both browsers in W11 display settings. Any steps I've missed?

Anyway, not the miracle I hoped for. Tried several videos in YouTube, various resolutions and it's there but not much of an improvement over what my TV or whatever usually does to bring it up to 4K.

I'll play around a bit more, and any improvements are welcome so happy days, really. As ever, Bitrate is king and this was never going to fix that, was never meant too.

I cannot recommend the path-traded Half Life mod enough. It feels like a total remaster:

It's crazy how much the path tracing brings a 'modern' feel to the pixel graphics, whilst retaining the original art style.

I'm half way through a replay and it's been brilliant.

I do just love the way that in the 4090 we've got more power than anything ever needs, yet games publishers have seemingly made it their priority to fuck up almost every single new release going. It's thoroughly rubbish, and at the moment I'm getting far more pleasure out of playing on the Switch. At least I understand why the machine starts to wheeze and grunt a little.

I got the cablemod adaptor and YES it fits in the Lian Li O11D dynamic. I didn't get the custom cable because its not the cable mess that bothers me, it was the nvidia adaptor being smushed and bent against the case glass that was freaking me out. Wahey
