Got this on PS5. The sprites are not as bad as I expected, but their contrast could do with a boost.

The presentation of the game though is delightful. Basiscape is in charge of the audio and it sounds like it. Lots of UI touch ups and I even spotted some KB+M control support on the PS5. Madness. Gameplay is classic TicTacs. No idea how all the new combat tweaks work out, but I guess I'll get to know about those in due time.

[edit] FYI, I guess I should disclose we (as in my employer) worked on parts of the game's localization.

My physical edition has been dispatched.

The steelbook arrived separately, weeks ago.

Did you order from the Square Enix store?  I did and the same thing happened with the steel book arriving weeks ago and the game arrived today without a shipping notification email  from them or a receipt in the envelope. I’m looking forward to properly playing it, I’ve bought but never got far into the N64 game or Knights of Lodi’s so I’m hoping this time it hooks me.

Yeah, I think the Square Enix store was the only place to get it. I was a bit worried when the steelbook turned up on its own!
I wonder if my copy will be wating for me when I get home. Hope so!

Actually Amazon had the Steelbook edition as well as I got mine today. Although I think the Switch edition sold out they still have the PS4 and PS5 version.

I emailed them yesterday to ask where the game was when I didn’t receive a shipping email ( a poster on Resetera had ordered the PS5 version from them and received the game and steel book together on Thursday) and they apologised for the delay and said I’d get an email when it was dispatched which didn’t happen so there’s a good chance it is waiting for you at home.

Just started this (PC).

New music is awesome and I like the voice acting too.  I don't like the way the music volume dips when dialogue comes in though.

Sprites suck quite a bit - the filtered look is bad and I wish they had put that bit more into the budget to make new & decent sprites.  Is just about bearable in zoomed out mode, but I want to mod as a matter of urgency.

The rotatable camera is a nice touch too and nod to FFT.

Really nice remake overall.

We clearly have different concepts of "really nice" ;)

In seriousness though: is the filter optional? As in, can you just stick the game to the original sprites and textures? I love Tactics Ogre, but I'd struggle to justify buying a copy that looks worse than my PSP version!

I see someone picked this for their biggest disappointments of the year, with no comment. Is it just because of the crappy sprites?

This was me. I'll try and explain my thinking. I loved the game on PSP, years ago, and was really looking forward to this updated version.

In many respects it's an excellent re-release. It has the look and feel of the original game, and the changes to the way the characters level up are a significant improvement. Personally I think the voiceovers are awful, but you can easily turn them off, so I'm not marking the game down on that basis.

But for me it has a couple of issues:

1) It's slooooow. Especially by modern standards. With up to 12 characters on each side, even the most basic battles can take upward of half an hour. Ten minutes of that is each side slowly shuffling towards each other. Everything turns into a war of attrition, you slowly knock down the enemy's health while they do the same to you and the person left standing is the winner. It fits with the game's themes - it's quite a grim depiction of war, with bodies everywhere and there are no power fantasies here - but it is very, very plodding at times. And it's not the only bit that's slow…

2) The one bit of the game that needed fixing but has barely been touched is the management of your squad. There's no easy way to tell who's gained new skills recently so you have to go through each team member individually and work out which little icons are new. The shop interface is a nightmare and it's really hard to tell who needs new equipment without constantly flicking backwards and forwards between the shop and the character screen, and the crafting system is even more complicated than that. It means the very long battles are interspersed with very long squad management sections, but at least the battles are fun - this stuff is just unnecessarily frustrating. I never feel like I've optimised things properly, because I never feel like I've been given the information to do that.

It's a shame because a lot of what the game does is still best in class but the return on your time invested is very low. On the SNES and the PSP that was easier to overlook, somehow, but on a machine like the Switch that has everything from XCOM 2 to Mario & Rabbids, there are many turn-based strategy options that provide more bang for your buck. Tactics Ogre is showing its age, I guess, just in terms of pacing.

Maybe one day I'll come back to it and be more in the mood, but for now it just feels like a bit too much work.

Been playing it recently and I love it, it's my comfort blanket game, the music, the story, even the new voice acting is fantastic. I much prefer it to Xcom and Rabbids, just the whole vibe does it for me. Theres not a lot of games like it, and most of those are made by the same team, it's just one of the greatest SRPG's ever made and I think they did a great job with this version.
