Cover: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope

 

Reviews: Quite high scoring for summer month. I'd not heard of the highest scoring game so that was quite a shock (but searching the forum there's a few people excited for it, but I don't see a thread on it)

It’s a game from a previous edge columnist that is also going into gamepass. I imagine the latter point means there will be more posted about it once it releases.

 

(it might also be going on Apple Arcade, can’t remember).

I played Her Story and wasn't all that impressed, I'm not really a fan of having to plug away trying to find keywords to expose a bit more story - and found the actual story quite silly (and if I recall I think I stumbled on something key to the plot quite early, which ruined it). As a consequence, I never played his next game (but I did read the plot summary) and find all the praise for his stuff a bit baffling.

 

Does this follow the same structure as the previous games (typing in keywords to get snippets of information) or is it something a bit more accessible? That'll make the difference between me caring or not, because the premise does sound very interesting.

No loss to me as it is a style of game that I have zero interest in.

Telling Lies is initially super intrigued making way to frustration as you try to piece together more and more footage till it just goes absolutely nowhere. 
 

I went from initially enjoying the journey to being let totally unsatisfied. 
 

A 9 for Telling Lies is absolutely insane to me, but you know it’s all just opinion and doesn’t mean much. I see As Dusk Falls got a 6 and it’d be a sure bet to be the better game.

It's similar in the way that you're working through a video archive, but this time you don't input words, you zoom in on an element in shot and it finds a close match in another clip and jump cuts to that.

I hated Telling Lies initially, especially the way you were just watching one side of a phone call. The actors are all pretty good, but there’s only so much one-side-of-a-phone-call acting you can reasonably expect someone to do, and Logan Marshall-Green in particular kept doing this ‘I’m listening’ face where he raised his eyebrows, lowered his head, and frowned, and it started annoying the hell out of me. 

 

I think the game could have made this a bit clearer, but it improved hugely once I realised you don’t need to listen to the whole thing and could just skim through until you found something intriguing. After that particular penny dropped, I thought it was pretty engaging, and I particularly liked the way that you’d stumble across revelatory bits of information in passing and would have to skim backwards through the conversation to pick up the context. It made a nice change from the usual linear way that twists are put across, and added to the feeling of piecing stuff together. I’m really interested to see what his new game does with the idea of reviewing disparate bits of information.

Immortality sounds maddening for someone like me (and the way I play these games); the equivalent of scrubbing a point-and click screen for hotspots, multiplied by the amount of frames in a piece of footage. Then again, I managed to complete the security video minigame in Phoenix Wright. ;)
