I really like the other Sam Barlow fmv detective-y games if for no other reason than the good use of the medium.

They're also pretty good in regards to entry level type of games that aren't control scheme based but also aren't just complete balls.

He needs to get the blade runner license so we can all enhance and rotate or do the VK test etc. :)

I'm not entirely sure I'd really give the previous two 9s though if I was to have to grade them (not that anyone is) but I'll definitely get this one just to see what it all does.

It's funny though, I wouldn't really consider these FMV games, even though they technically are, as that term means to me that very specific period of time where it was all compressed to shit and used bink video or some other old tool that's gone from the intro to games. 😀

2 tens in 1998: Gran Turismo and Ocarina of Time

2 tens in 2007: Halo 3 and The Orange Box

2 tens in 2008: Grand Theft Auto IV and LittleBigPlanet

2 tens in 2010: Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Rock Band 3

2 tens in 2013: Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us

And now 2022.

And that's not counting the retrospective 10s either. 2010 has, like, four tens if you include RDR and Super SFIV.

Crazy to think that of all the 10s given in previous years with two 10s in them, only three were actually good!* ;) Still, the batting average has been significantly improved by this year guaranteeing at least one good 10, likely two based on previous Barlow games; another good year and we might actually manage a 50% hit rate!

*or possibly two and one-fifth, depending on how you look at them

Really liked Her Story, but found Telling Lies dull and ruined by the inability to rewind. Still, cautiously optimistic about Immortality now.

Yeah, I think that was a common criticism of TL. You can skip to the start/end of clips almost instantly this time.

There was an interview with S Barlow in Edge around the time of Telling Lies' release, where he said he was aware that some people didn't like the relatively slow rewind speed, but decided to keep it in the game anyway because he liked the idea of adding friction and texture to the act of searching through the archive. I can see what he means, although I suspect it might have worked better if there were some in-game reason for that friction - like, if you were searching through archives of CCTV tape from the eighties, or were using some ancient big iron archive with slow read speeds. As it is, it just felt a bit restrictive that you couldn't properly scrub through footage given that you were using what looked like a pretty modern computer.

I wasn't really taken with Her Story at all and think Edge massively overrated it but am I going to end up buying this one just because of the 10/10? MOST LIKELY.

It's launching on both Gamepass and via Netflix's mobile apps so there's pretty much no reason to buy it for most people.

Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey were both in 2017 right? God, it feels like half a century ago.

Yep, apologies - since you already mentioned 2017's 10s I was just listing the others. :D

I'm going to have to cancel my subscription. I still haven't received the Cuphead issue and UK subscribers got that two months ago. The delivery times had gotten slightly better earlier this year but they've gone to complete and utter shit again. The website lies that 373, 374 and 375 have all been delivered but thats clearly nonsense.

Sorry to hear that. DM me your subscription number and I'll investigate it on Monday.

Does anybody know when more reviews for Immortality will appear?

The game has a release date in 2 days time, so it would seem the general embargo is quite close to release and given that a print magazine had an exclusivity period for it, then it could have easily been reviewed by everybody else by now too if they were allowed to talk about it.

As much as the end result didn't quite work, there's more merit in the thought process and intent there than fault in the outcome.
