A new version of Hellraiser is coming to Hulu on 7 October. Directed by David Bruckner, of The Night House. A female Pinhead now, played by Jamie Clayton. Or maybe sexless, as I heard the novel Pinhead is modified to the extent that they are basically sexless.

I bought Arrow's box set of the first three movies. The first is great of course, but I always liked the second one too. I can't remember a goddamn thing about the third other than something to do with a nightclub.

Pinhead is gonna have chains shooting out of her vagina after the fetishism club closes covered in menstrual blood.

 

Justin Bieber plays Frank but as a transgender transitioning into a man. The final scene has Pinhead about to eat Bieber's penis but as he tears off his/her leather trousers it is revealed Bieber has a vagina.

 

Sorta like the crying game but with a Coil soundtrack.

I watched it recently and thought it was pretty shit as a horror to be honest. Great story, though, so I’m up for a remake which is actually scary.

The Night House is very good, I do not expect this to be very good.

 

Speaking of unnecesary TV shows of films I noticed my Sky box was  pushing a TV series of Day of The Dead the other day. I expect that to also not be very good even without comparison to the absolutely superlative film.

Its not really scary, its more curious. Like the box itself. It's great precisely for the reason it doesn't go for simple shocks, it goes for cerebral imagining. So few horror films go into that dark existential territory.  Were you at least entertained?

Yeah somewhat, I liked how weird it was. That’s why I’m quite excited about this. The story is there, if they can make it scary as well as weird it could be great.

Thanks for answering. Personally I wish more horror would lean towards the existential, even if it meant sacrificing the scaryness. Ghosts and monsters don't scare me or intrigue me as much as desire, obsession or self destructive behaviour.

Do you like Panos Cosmatos’ films? He’s easily my favourite horror director now. I didn’t find Mandy particularly scary, but you can cut the emotion and atmosphere with a knife. Coincidentally the monsters do owe a lot to Hellraiser, even if they aren’t particularly prevalent.

 Absolutely. Great shout. Mandy has the totally unique 'atmosphere' that Hellraiser has. Otherworldly and unlike anything you've ever seen before, despite actually being a very conventional revenge film. It's the exact same movie as death wish yet not at all like it. Brilliant film.

There's a borderline terrible 80's movie called The Stepfather where a guy is going around marrying women, killing them, then taking their heritage. There's a bit in it where he gets his own name wrong and his wife questions it. He then turns and breaks her nose. It's not scary cos you don't see it coming, and it doesn't make you jump with lazy sound FX. But it's so terrifying because you realise it's about being in love with someone that you don't know. It's cerebral horror. The 80's did it very well. I miss it.

😮 The Stepfather is great! Although I think it's overlooked and underrated, Terry O'Quinn's performance alone raises it way above the usual fare.

You're right, it is great, but its one of those ones where if you tell someone its great they'll watch it and find it hokey. Much like Timmo did with Hellraiser

Hellraiser at it's best is about hedonistic desire, greed, addiction and excess and where it leads. The more it becomes about the Cenobites the less I'm interested in it.

Yeah, I loved it when I was a kid, but mainly because the picture of pinhead on the video cover scared me shitless.

 

It’s a really good story but the film goes a bit hokey towards the end. I’m totally fine with a ‘reimagining’.

I re-watched Hellraiser 1 and 2 again recently.

 

I think the first holds up, and it remains creepy to me not because of the gore or the cenobites, but because it taps into weird childhood nightmares of your parents not being who they purport to be, or being otherwise "off". The scenes with Frank wearing Larry's skin are very much the sort of nightmares I had as a kid. 

 

Hellraiser 2 is worth a watch. It's nastier than the first one (the razor scene on the mattress especially), but descends into a corridor chase knockabout by the end.

 

Hellraiser 3 is shite, haven't seen any of the others.

There are some strange elements of studio interference in there though, which really put it out of place, including the fact that while the film is clearly set in the UK, the arrival of police wearing American uniforms kinda stands out.

At least Clive Barker is directly involved, having regained the rights.

I have a soft spot for 4, Bloodline although I totally acknowledge it's rubbish. Moves between the present, 18th-century France and space. It's a total mess and commits the major crime of a lot of sequels by trying to fill out the backstory. Compared to the sequels that followed it at least tries something different, it's certainly less bland than 3. Obviously it can't hold a candle to 1 and 2. 

 

I need to pick that Arrow boxset up. It's meant to have some great extras.

The setting is weird, it feels like it exists in some quantum state between the US and UK.

I love the first 2, mayber Hellbound above the first.

 

Watched 3 about a year ago. It was ok ish I guess but it hasn’t held up well.

 

4 is an odd one. Some good bits but a mess. Last one to get a theatrical release I think

I remember seeing the Hellraiser: Bloodline VHS when I was kid and really wanting to see it. Didn’t happen until it was on Sci-Fi channel a few years later.

It was my first exposure to the director Alan Smithee, and I remember looking him up on IMDb and being amazed at the volume of films he’d worked on.
