Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

It's Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, who some don't get on with, so I thought I'd mention that first. And don't ask me what's going on with that title. Coming to Netflix on 21 September.

Evan Peters stars as Dahmer. Largely told from the victims perspective and goes into the police incompetence and apathy that allowed him to go on for so long.

I'm watching this, but not sure on it, I have begun to wonder though, Ryan Murphy does seem to focus on stories (be they true or not) that have both homosexual and violent themes to them. I don't know enough about them as a person, but there's alot of both themes in most of what I saw it AHS (can't remember if it was Roanoke or Apocalypse I last watched), then he also did the Versace case, this one too. Is he purposely linking homosexuality, sex and violence all together?

Well I certainly see men using their power in different ways in both of those as well tbh. So don't think @wev is that wrong.

Though blond Jeff is a whole different kettle of fish.

anyway as I said in the Netflix thread. This is good so far imo but God could I smell that apartment.

He also covered the OJ Simpson case and Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky, so I don't think he does that exclusively.

Sure, those don't cover homosexuality, though one does cover violence and the other has strong sexual themes.

Pretty much this. AHS does feature alot of heterosexual themes too, in its defence, and there are well documented links between sex and violence, particularly among serial killers.

But I'm maybe looking at things too in depth, I don't know much about Murphy, and I wonder how much this focus is subconscious, it just feels like a recurring theme (and one American media have always been more than happy to push).

It's not subconscious as far as I can tell. Murphy, like many LGBTQ figures in Hollywood, primarily wants to tell stories that concern LGBTQ experiences. He absolutely dabbles in the melodrama of general celebrity glamour too, but seems firmly rooted in stories that resonate with him. Additionally, he keeps a healthy ensemble of LGBTQ actors in work too.

He definitely seems to be a powerful force for representation, the macabre and gaudiness. But he also seems to think that Evan Peters is the world's most complete actor. For better or worse.

This show's ok so far — it's more in line with his less high camp work.

Surely he thinks that of Sarah Paulson... not that I'm complaining about either! Peters is a deeply guilty pleasure.

They're hallmarks of his work but I don't think he's explicitly linking them, as suggested. Plus he has some programmes that are more of a departure (Feud) and some that play them for laughs (Scream Queens).

This is great - I’ve watched three eps so far and it is very grimey and mostly very horrible. I’m not really into serial killer stuff as a rule but I’ll watch anything Ryan Murphy puts out, and this doesn’t disappoint.

What’s going on with that Peters guy though? He seems resistant to the forces of aging.

Same here. I’ve dipped into serial

killer stuff occasionally (the David Tennant thing about Nielsen for example) but it’s not an area I camp out in much. But this is mesmerising and disturbing.

Yeah this is really good, very dark and grimy. Evan Peters is great as is the directing by Jennifer Lynch (David's daughter).

I think that's what really makes it work, it has a similar dream like voyeuristic quality to her father's work

If you're doing Dahmer and it doesn't leave the viewer feeling dirty you're doing it wrong. Dahmer's crimes are so horrific you can't really portray them without the grime. The photos of his apartment and some of his trophies and records of his actions are the kind of thing that burns into your soul.

I had to skim through a couple of episodes where he was just playing with organs, but yeah this made me feel awful. Mission accomplished.

The actress playing the neighbour can not pull off 36 as claimed in one episode (daughter 18, the age I had her).

Was surprised to learn his dad and stepmom are still alive. I wonder what they made of this.

My wife loves watching serial killer stuff but she gave up on this after a few episodes because it's so relentlessly fucking horrible. She said she couldn't watch it any more because it was making her agitated.

I'm up to episode 5 and it's one of the grimest, unsettling things I've watched in a long time.  It certainly isn't a binge-r!

I always find this idea that he’s inconsistent to be very odd. Everything I’ve seen of his have been amongst the best telly I’ve watched. Feud, American Crime Story, Pose, Halston, The Andy Warhol Diaries - all perfect. And even the lower tier stuff like the best American Horror Stories (Coven & Freak Show) and Ratched are sweet trash.

Hard to think of many people who are so consistently great.

I’d say that AHS ranges from being some of the best TV I’ve ever watched (Hotel, Freak Show, Asylum) all the way to some of the worst (1984, Apocalypse). Ratched was fine, but I think it’s more that his work is often quite internally inconsistent. Generally feels like it might have been more effective without the last few episodes.
