RLLMUK's Top 20 Comedy films of all time!

I've wanted to do another film list thing having finally recovered from doing the top 10 of every year for lots of decades a few years back.

I'm contemplating starting an all time film list or top 20 by whole decade lists, but first let us go with comedies.  What are the funniest/best comedy films of all time?

Rules

Must be a feature film (I won't stick to released at cinema as I'm sure there are a couple of decent comedies that were streaming only (an Andy Samberg time loop comedy SPRINGS to mind) so no stand up specials or Office Christmas special or three episodes of Blackadder tied together)

What classes as a comedy is obviously very subjective so nothing will be dismissed, unless you have something like Schindler's List in there. Ideally for films that are not an out and out comedy then lean towards films that are comedy first and another genre second, so using superhero films as an example - Ragnarok or Deadpool or the second Suicide Squad are comedy superhero films rather than superhero films with some comedy in it - so Endgame has some funny quips and fat Thor, but isn't a comedy.  Same for action (Die Hard - no? - Last Boy Scout - yes?), horror, animation, etc.  And, again nothing disqualified, but preferably don't go for films that aren't comedy, but are funny because they are total shit.

Use the title from IMDB if you can and put the year if there is any title that might have a film of the same name.

Scoring will be 20 points for 1st place and 1 point for 20th place with any ties for total points decided on number of first places picks and so on.

Deadline is Sunday 9th October at the moment, but may be extended if everyone is still too sad about the Queen to put a list in.

I think the Film & TV thread doesn't always get the same traction on these things unfortunately. I can probably easily make a top 20... But I like to put commentary in with it so it would take some time...

I’m putting a list together but it’s surprisingly hard to decide what’s a comedy and what isn’t. Are we including animation, for example?

Yes - I think animation should be in there.  Not that this is a great example of an all time animated comedy or anything, but I watched League of Super Pets yesterday and found it very funny and probably more laughs than a lot of things I've seen this year.

Various magazine/web site top comedy lists have got South Park Movie, Team America, Monsters Inc as examples somewhere in their lists.

Tried and gave up because comedy's so subjective and while I think No Country For Old Men, for instance, is funnier than most comedies, I wouldn't exactly put it in a list. But then, if it makes me laugh, maybe it is a comedy? I'll try again later.

I'm thinking of arranging my list based on how much I laughed at the jokes on first viewing. However that means that my list will probably be biased toward gag-a-minute stuff (Monty Python, The Naked Gun, etc) rather than films that are definitely comedies, but not so focused on one-liners (e.g. Groundhog Day, The Truman Show, Back to the Future, Being John Malkovich). With the latter films, the comedy is secondary to the high concept.

The Coen Brothers are a good example of what I'm talking about. Fargo and Barton Fink are my two favourite films of theirs, and they have a lot of black comedy elements - but things like Burn After Reading, Hail Caesar and O Brother Where Art Thou probably have more individual jokes that are memorable, even though overall they're weaker films. So which films fit best on a list of best/favourite comedies?

I thought this would be less stressful than doing top 20 per decade or all time for people 🤪

I am doing my own one but I’m on an easy 26 short list already. It is difficult.

@Ry That’s a nice list to kick things off

I’m glad it’s got an early mention as I watched There’s Something About Mary again a few weeks ago and I still completely buckle at the opening set piece. There’s probably funnier films I’m sure but I don’t think there’s a more relentlessly hilarious section than that. From the second he arrives at the house until he leaves in the ambulance it just gets better and better. The Farrelly Brothers had such a run around that time.

I need to rewatch it before I finalise my list as I haven’t seen if for a long, long time, but when it came out me and my mates went to the cinema 3 or 4 times then battered a pretty decent pirate VHS we got from a comic con.

Made my shortlist, Rudd's movie.

Absolutely. It’s a brilliant film and I feel clever liking it as loads of people think it’s rubbish.

Reminds me I might’ve made a ricket not including Role Models come to think of it.
