Obviously the only truly acceptable Mario film would be something in Yoichi Kotabe's style with a ludicrous hand animation budget, but that's never happening. I've come to accept this.

This Hollywood thing has a bit of an Aldi own-brand feel but could've been worse. My daughter is glad the penguins are in it.

I think it looked great. The penguin attack drew a genuine laugh.

But the "what is the place" vibe from Mario doesn't fill me with much hope. Plumber brothers sucked down a magical toilet whilst working late one night and then saving the Mushroom Kingdom isn't really the story I want.

I guess the problem is we don't really know what Mario does between rescue attempts so how do you start a Mario movie but this is a bit too clichéd for me I think.

IMO it’s good that Mario has a look and voice that’s distinct to the film rather than trying to copy the games.  It makes it easier to think of this as ‘Movie Mario’ who may or may not be as good as ‘Game Mario’ depending on how the movie turns out.

"But what other the other 'Movie Mario'?"

We do not speak of the other Movie Mario.

Call me a miserable old bastard if you must but I'm not sure as why being a miserable old bastard I should care about this. I skip the cut scenes in Mario games and I'm absolutely sure I wouldn't pay extra for more of them so I'm certainly not going to pay extra to see 2 hours of them in a cinema or streamed.

Not for me I'm afraid.

It's hardly meant to be a film aimed at the demographic of the forum, even if we've "grown up" with Mario, so I find the surprise that a kids movie isn't for them a bit strange.

It was never going to be a strangely gritty dig at capitalism and even early trump was it? The one with tintin in it already did that and was a flop.

This is when at the end of the film it jump cuts to a man rocking backwards and forwards in a padded cell and it’s revealed that Mario and all of his adventures have been various chapters of someone’s descent into insanity.

But yeah, think it looks fine. Captures the Mario spirit pretty well. As much as I love Charles Martinet, I think listening to a feature film’s worth of his dialogue would drive anyone up the wall. Think the small snippet we heard in this trailer sounded alright.
