Need For Speed: Unbound - Dec 02 2022

I would be surprised if the Criterion of 2022 has many direct links with the Criterion that made Hot Pursuit or Most Wanted, let alone the Criterion that made the Burnout games. I gather that a huge chunk of the developer was sent over to Ghost Games to work on Need for Speed, but I would also imagine most of them will have gone by now.

I would imagine they mostly exist as a sub-brand for EA now. Still, the NFS games are a guilty pleasure of mine, and I'll be interested to see what this one is like, even if it's probably not going to be very different than it would be if Ghost had developed it.

I don't understand how EA manages their projects, NFS had their own fans and their own type of racing and it mostly stayed away from the stuff everyone else liked about arcade racing. Hot Pursuit 2010 was a fantastic game but it didn't need the NFS brand to absorb all of their arcade/non-sim offerings.

There was some footage a while back which had realistic cars and environments, with comic book effects overlaid over the top. It looked a bit like that KFC advert with the cartoon chickens on the top of the guys on BMXs. It might well have changed by now, admittedly.

Mm, I was just wondering if this was the one that was supposed to have an "anime aesthetic"... I remember some exaggerated smoke trails or something in some of the leaks, but I wouldn't be surprised if they've changed their minds or toned it down...

I hope for three things.

1. That it doesn’t have a story.
2. That it is full of awesome point to point racing. If there is an open world I hope it still opts for point to point races within it.
3. That it doesn’t have a story.

That is what I hope.

Okay.

I mean, that could still be some image editing gubbins for promo shots; we'll have to wait for in-game footage.

Normally I don't care for need for speed. Even the good ones Ive never really got into. Two things this has going for it though..

1. Criterion, whatever condition they are in now are the only UK developer to successfully navigate the internal workings of EA, they've survived multiple generations of hardware and cycles of boom and bust. I'm interested to see what they come up with and their work on the star wars games gives promise towards their current form.

2. Codemasters Cheshire, AKA the remnants of Evolution studios were merged with criterion and put onto this. I'm hoping that it means we'll get the next version of their future of racing games from this. Thought driveclub was their strongest game... that onrush was a destruction all-stars/bleeding edge style, made to fit a demographic that doesn't exist horror show: but that had a redeeming solid core of gameplay (that those two games didn't have). Dirt 5 was pretty great (I play it still and the dirt branding was the only thing holding it back). I'm excited to see what they do next and hope they've done another good job here.

Reminds me of Auto Modellista, that was one good looking game.

Thought the same, that was indeed a lovely looking game.

Wonder if there's any significance in the U, B and N in UNBOUND done in a street/graf typeface, but the rest is in a regular/bold sans. Looks like it represents…something?

not at 30fps it doesn't

Next gen consoles.

"Titled Need for Speed Unbound, Criterion's long-awaited return to the racing scene will utilize new-gen consoles and the Frostbite Engine to deliver 4K 60fps visuals in a free-roaming open world called Lakeshore. The physics will run at a high frame-rate as well, offering "more control and nuance to...the physical movement of the cars," creative director Kieran Crimmins says."
