Next gen consoles.

"Titled Need for Speed Unbound, Criterion's long-awaited return to the racing scene will utilize new-gen consoles and the Frostbite Engine to deliver 4K 60fps visuals in a free-roaming open world called Lakeshore. The physics will run at a high frame-rate as well, offering "more control and nuance to...the physical movement of the cars," creative director Kieran Crimmins says."

okay I'll give them credit for that

not at 30fps it doesn't

I don't really care about frame rate. 60 is lovely but I've been back to Blur, Most Wanted and some others on Xbox 360 and if the game's good enough I can deal with it. But as Ryan says, they're hitting 60 anyway.

If i can skip all the crap, cringey voice acting and story then i might be interested in this. Need to see some genuine gameplay first.

Same for me. I am in for the racing, not the story and definitely not the characters. I tried NFS Heat and gave up after like an hour, the absolute cringe killed it for me.

I've got a feeling it's going to be a lot of dialogue and shit. Probably akin to Midnight Club LA, going by the trailer. Do EA still do the 10 hour trials with EA Play?

Apparently the usual 10 hour trial starting on Nov 29th.

Does the physics in a 60fps game normally run slower than the graphics? Seems like a weird flex, as the target market would say.

anyhoo the best one was NFS Payback. I LOVED that goddamn game.

Physics will run at the same or faster rate than the frame rate in any game.

Slower wouldn't really work... if the physics simulation hasn't been updated since the last frame there's nothing to re-render*.

* I could think of some pretty pointless edge cases like capturing user input at a higher rate but even that wouldn't be worth re-rendering, just capture it.

More of a statement to people who play Forza or Gran Turismo than your arcade racing fan I'd say.

The most recent Most Wanted and Hot Pursuit were my favourites. As they are closest we have got to a new Burnout.

I thought the PS2 generation of games were fucking terrible. I worked in a games shop when they were out and they specifically only got bought by wee arseholes. Lol

The backdrops and the city have the same aesthetic as Need for Speed 2015, which is promising - that was the visual pinnacle of the series, and (in my opinion) one of the best-looking videogames ever made.

I think the quality of an NFS game comes down to one thing - are the police chases any good? - but this looks the part.

I actually hope there is an abundance of these anime visual flourishes. I personally would have liked to have seen some intense chromatic aberration like effects on the buildings themselves (above eyelevel to avoid strain) with some subtle polka dots, and hard block cell shading in places.

I am excited all the same!

Was that the one with the FMV cut scenes?

I enjoyed that Need for Speed. My only criticism is that there wasn't much of a police presence.

The police chases were feeble, but yeah, I really enjoyed that one too. It looked amazing, and the road network was beautifully designed - a nice mix of sweeping curves to drift round and highways to sprint along. There was plenty wrong with it, but there was a good foundation there. It was a shame they seemed to have chucked everything away for the next game.

I had a real old man moment after watching the trailer and then seeing news stories about A$ap Rocky being in the trailer and the game. I recognize the name but not the person. Might as well start writing my will now...

Game looks odd/interesting. I need to see proper game footage before making a judgement on the visual effects stuff they've got going on but it's good to see EA take risks with the franchise.

I imagine it would look amazing on an OLED.

Payback? I liked that despite the focus being on loot boxes (subsequently removed) when I played it. It was essentially NFS Horizon.
