Need For Speed: Unbound - Dec 02 2022

EA seem quite confident about this version of NFS. The last one limped out with very little publicity, whereas the vibe around this one seems quite bullish. No idea whether this is a good sign or not, but I'm much more interested in this one than I was in Need for Speed Heat.

I was kind of hoping the graphics themselves would be Auto Modelista style to help all the extra flourishes fit in

Yep, it doesn’t gel very well to me but maybe it’ll be better when playing it. I’ll certainly download the 10hr trial.

I'm deprived of Ridge Racer enough to give this a look, but dear lord is it an ugly graphical mish-mash in the trailer. The style might have worked without the humanoids, but then there wouldn't be a story, so we can't have that. Sceptical spectacles on and we'll see what happens. (Also very afraid the style is only there for the MTX.)

It all depends on how the story is told. The less time I have to spend with boring people the better. I care not for rivalries, love interestes, betrayal etc. So please be like Hot Pursuit.

'Press start to skip scene' is my most used button after after nitro in these sorts of games.  Let me race!

Ok. I'm sold.

It looks like a continuation of Criterions previous work.

Is it open world? I loved Most Wanted on 360 and that was the closest we got to a Burnout Paradise 2.

Edit: yup it's open world.

Looks good. Hopefully the gameplay will end up overtaking (no pun intended) the shit character/story bollocks starring all these 13 years olds in hoodies and baseball caps - that stance on some of this "street" stuff is tired and outdated.

Every single one of these NPC's looks and sounds like an utter bellend - maybe Nathan Barley types - I mean if that is the style they are going for in this, it'll be even better, but I don't think EA do irony - so it'll all be deadly straightlaced and piss poor

Yeah not sure about this so far - the world seems quite bland and no one shuts up - I mean constant commenting from the player and NPC in the car.
The fancy effects also mean you really are encouraged to play from outside of the car which is my least favourite driving view.
milk play the 10 hour trial and see if it grows on me but it looks like a “wait for gamepass” for me.

Well you can adjust a slider between grip and drift but it doesn’t appear to be unlocked from the start so you have to use default NFS car on ice cornering for a fair bit.
Disappointed if I’m honest as I really wanted a decent criterion arcade racer but the constant chatter and handling are putting me off.

As far as I can tell, there's one driving model, and it handles very much like Hot Pursuit, in that the steering is pretty heavy and you drift by tapping / holding the brake. The cars seem to lose a lot of speed when drifting, but it feels very familiar - it's not a million miles away from NFS: Heat, in that it has the same day/night structure, and the same kids in sportswear vs The Man setup. I think I expected it to be more of a departure in that it's a new team (I gather it's the old Codemasters racing people under the Criterion name) and that NFS: Heat didn't seem to make much of an impact, but it's very Need for Speed, and specifically very NFS: Heat. Although that said, the boost mechanic is taken straight from Midnight Club: LA.

I've quite enjoyed what I've played so far. It looks spectacular - the car effects look amazing, and work perfectly with the aesthetic of the game. The cars look gorgeous, too. The environments aren't quite up there with NFS: 2015, but they're not bad at all.

The races feel a bit slow and the handling round corners feels like it will take some getting used to, but this seems solid so far.

I'm playing on Series X and have noticed a few instances of slowdown. The reflections on the car body, the bonnet at least, are absolutely atrocious and look like they are being rendered at about 240p. Drifting is easy enough, but you definitely feel like you lose more speed compared to your competitors. I'm also not keen on the limited number of retries for the races. Yet I'm still enjoying it.

The drifting in this is shit. Really shit. You lose far too much speed.

I was expecting it to feel like Hot Pursuit or Burnout but it doesn't.

Maybe it's the starting car I'm using (Lambo) but I'm not having fun. Will give it a few more hours though.

The cool kid driver bullshit can fuck off. It's terrible and it's always been terrible.

But right now I'm glad I didn't pre-order.

It seems traction control is off by default (which is what i usually run in racing games anyway) but I decided to turn it on and it feels much better.

It's off be default on every car though. So you need to change them one by one.
