World Cup Qatar 2022 - Desert Strike

I think it will be really poor to not stick to it, especially after all the noise we've had for a while about him wearing it, and to me would say the players have just been paying lip service to it all along.

If they are worried about the bookings they can change captain for each match so nobody gets a suspension (it's not as if players give a crap who the captain is anyway).

How do you think this will go down tomorrow? They back out of it, or continue on and Kane starts on an instant yellow card? I take it the ref has to show him the card on the pitch before actual kick off - or yellow card him at the coin toss!

Then he might get booked for diving a few minutes in! That would be incredible.

You're all mad. We'll comfortably beat Iran. You know when you see someone with a Motorhead t-shirt and it's from Primark and you say, "name three songs!". It's the same. Name three Iranian players. None of you can.

Bonus points if you can tell us what positions they play.

Sorry if this has been answered but why was the first goal given as offside?  It looked as though at least one player was playing the guy onside.  Also it looked like everyone was onside when the free kick was taken. Have I been doing offsides wrong all my life?

Edit: ignore me, I can see chat about it.

Fair play to the BBC for ignoring the opening ceremony and going in on the politics and issues of having the thing in fucking Qatar.

Instead of balloon ghosts and Morgan fucking Freeman, they went to the BBC News reporters to actually report the issues.

I know they are there and doing it and covering it and that loads of you hate the BBC, but they got the tone right today.

Lemmy upfront, Philthy Animal in goal and Fast Eddie Clarke running up and down the pitch making sure Motorhead win?

FIFA are just abhorrent cunts, aren't they?

Slightly disappointed that these countries won't be sticking 2 fingers up at them and going ahead with it anyway, but I suspected this would happen.

Really hope the tournament bombs massively off the pitch - FIFA seem to sink to new lows every day.

Oh England will win. It just won’t be 7-0

If one of the above teams loses the first 2 games and are out of the tournament for the third group stage game then it might get interesting.

Or, any team that has always qualified before Game 3, could have their captain come out with the arm band - get booked in front of the world and then they could just sub him - slightly risky as he could get booked in a knock out game and suspended for the next one or you could make an injured player captain, get him booked and then sub him knowing he won't be playing again anyway.

Opportunities for at least one team to make a bigger deal out of it than just letting the captains wear the armband and no-one really noticing or giving a shit.

Even better idea - England and Wales win both of their games and game 3 is a dead rubber.

Both teams come out with all 22 players wearing the armband.  WTF would happen then.

Well, if everyone was booked, then any players who now had a second yellow would be suspended from the next game.

I really wanted the FA and Harry Kane to dare FIFA into a massive incident, but unfortunately they've blinked at the first sign of trouble. Though having said that I wanted them to go ahead, it's only because I agree with the message myself, so my stance on this is potentially a bit hypocritical. There is genuinely a reason for captains not being allowed to wear an unsanctioned armband - what if this right (if it existed) was used for something more nefarious, like promoting a pro-fascist movement or an advertiser that wasn't allowed to be part of the tournament? While the example I'm about to give wouldn't happen given obvious political allegiances in the team, let's put forward the thought that the USA captain could wear a MAGA armband because he really believes in the message of Donald Trump. What would we think then?

My point is that we're only all for the One Love armband because of its message that goes against the corrupt as fuck process that led to the Qataris getting the tournament and their awful views on LGBTQ+ rights. While I think Kane SHOULD wear the armband, I can entirely see why FIFA wouldn't want this to become a thing even if the pressure from the Qataris wasn't there. But that pressure is probably the main reason. So fuck them! I'm conflicted. 😆

FIFA could have addressed this/ruled weeks ago - quite why they've decided to threaten yellow cards on the day/day before the first game involving some of these teams has just made it a news story during the tournament rather than it being lost in the build-up a couple of weeks ago.

Another idea - player gets a yellow in first game then his team are winning second game comfortably and have qualified.  Put the armband on near the end of the game - get booked, suspended for next game so wipe out the first yellow and all clear for the knock-out rounds.
