Laying the ground work for Qatar’s 6 penalties in their next game?

This must be the longest World Cup game ever by quite some margin.

Longest that didn't include extra time, definitely. 27 minutes of added time in the end.

That penalty decision wasn't particularly harsh in isolation, but of course when you put it next to the one on Maguire in the first half, it's completely ridiculous.

Very sloppy defensively on occasions which game Iran more opportunities than they should have had. The VAR penalty at the end was ridiculous but Iran never gave up while England switched off at the end at least twice with Pickford saving them the first time.

I mean we would be arguing for the pen the other way so I don’t have a problem with it being given . But it’s the inconsistency. Apparently the bear hug on maguire was fine.

Yeah, this is it. Either give them all (which would be loads of pens per game, but maybe that becomes necessary in order to get rid of so many obvious fouls in the box) or don't give any. Ludicrous.

FIFA carry on cunting, Belgium 3rd shirt has a grossly offensive word on it.

The Devils LOVE away shirt also needs to be adjusted

It features a striking graphic print. It is inspired by the world-famous Tomorrowland fireworks and symbolizes the shared values of diversity, equality and inclusiveness. On the inside it says 'LOVE' again. The RBFA must now adjust that shirt: “The word LOVE must disappear”, CEO Bossaert grumbles. “It's sad, but FIFA leaves us no choice. The rest of the equipment remains unchanged.”

I don't like that interview with Southgate. He's going to look at that match and take it as evidence that we need to be more defensive. If he goes down that line of thinking, the 5-4-1 will come back out, Bellingham will be shackled, and an attacking player will be sacrificed in order to play another centre-back.

We're a much better team when we play to our attacking strengths rather than to cover up our defensive weaknesses.

I’ve watched enough Liverpool games this season to know what happens when that kind of defending comes up against a team with a good counter attack.

I'd be amazed if he didn't go to 3-4-3 in the knockout stages, and to be honest I'm not convinced by the argument that it would be a bad idea. The trend of defensive solidity tending to win tournaments is pretty clear.

The idea that we would blitz Brazil and Argentina off the park if we just unleashed all our attacking talents seems fanciful at best.

I was certainly not amazed listening to Five Live last night when a caller of extreme mouth breathing proportions insisted you only win tournaments by being flamboyant and attacking.

I suspect he is still a staunch Brexit supporter.

Yeah, I'm conflicted about it. I do think that it's a slightly unique situation with this particular England team though. I don't remember a team that was so stacked in attacking talent and weak in defence, in terms of personnel. You get crazy attacking teams like when Ozzie Ardiles managed Spurs, but that's not what England is. The problem with England is that they can play a very defensive formation, but all it does is nullify our strengths. We still concede due to individual mistakes, while also sacrificing such attacking riches. The idea of us blowing Brazil away is daft, but if we play defensively against them we'll lose anyway due to the fact that whoever we play in central defence, they will commit three mistakes per game. Defensive solidity wins tournaments, but we aren't achieving that with this set of players no matter how many of them you put in there.

It's a real conundrum, and I hope Southgate can figure it out. I rate him very highly as an international manager. He certainly knows better than me.

The playbook that has won recent tournaments is the Western European one that emphasises defensive solidarity and controlled possession. Even Argentina and Brazil have morphed that way in the last few years. Interestingly I was reading both of those teams have struggled to play any European teams in the last three years and are shitting it slightly they've not road tested that approach against opposition well versed in playing it. So really we''d be best served going toe to toe like where we have the advantage rather than opening up and getting picked off. The chances we gave up today were players switching off not systems anyway.

I say this every time McCoist is mentioned, his constant need to say his co-commentator's name.

Also, Dublin was criticised for not shutting-up yesterday, but McCoist is just as bad.

Senegal kit - gorgeous.

Most of the Puma WC kits are horrible, but this and Uruguay's home shirt are lovely.

Pretty much all the Nike kits are shit apart from Brazil's, and the Portugal away. France away is ok.

Most of the Adidas kits are nice, Mexico away being the highlight.
