See, that was my first thought too - he was playing for it, but that doesn't make it not a penalty. He did check his run a bit (and move his body across), but players often slow down when they are about to pull the trigger to maintain control of the shot.

 

The challenge was nowhere near the ball and he could've got a shot off had he not had the leg across and shove in the back.

Yeah, on seeing the replay, I'm less certain of my initial opinion. It was a clumsy challenge that was never getting anywhere near the ball. But the Qatari player stepped away from where the ball was going, making the observer think he was trying to manufacture a penalty.

 

Could have gone either way.

Tuesday shaping up to be good.

 

Iran vs USA and Ecuador vs Senegal are both hard to call with the winner qualifying and then a small small chance of some sort of upset/extra drama in both groups if England slip up tonight or Wales travel back to 2016 and replace Bale and Ramsey with their younger versions and Qatar have all the Netherlands players arrested and imprisoned before their game?
