I don't understand why they don't just stop the clock when the ball is out of play / there's an injury / substitution rather than adding increments of time for the above things.

Also, is today "upsets day"? First Japan, now Belgium.

I’m not sure it’s an upset. Belgium were as shit as this against Canada, and scraped a lucky goal.

Belgium are relentlessly pedestrian. Seen more urgency from a sloth.

I admire Belgium's commitment, even with three minutes to go and trailing by a single goal, to not merely lumping it aimlessly into the box. They are sticking to their principles of passing it around the back four for 90 seconds, then lumping it aimlessly into the box.

I think that the standard of teams overall is much closer than in any other World Cup. By that, I mean you have maybe two standout sides at the top (France and probably Spain), a very mushy and mediocre second tier and the lesser teams are of much higher quality than their equivalents from the past.

The standard of games has, by and large, been pretty poor, hasn't it? Another couple of largely rubbish matches so far today, though at least the results were pretty funny. To keep thinks open, wins for Canada and Germany would make their groups very interesting for the final round of matches.

Yeah, I think much like we see in the PL, any team on their day can beat another and whilst you get the occasional team that really is awful (Qatar), the general standard of play is always improving. People citing Costa Rica's win as an upset I think is more a reaction to their mauling vs Spain rather than Japan being considered a particularly good team. Likewise, Morocco are fairly solid defensively, so them beating a very poor on the night Belgian side shouldn't be seen as a massive shock.

Sort of result that proves why Southgate does what he does at this point of the tournament.

Martinez will doubtless use far too many words to say what a good performance it was and Henry will be telling anybody who'll listen (including the team) how he would have scored the chances they had and he's better still than all of them.

Germany to beat Spain later on then?

I may have a cheeky flutter.

I actually thought Spain were undervalued at 29/20 considering Germany's abysmal record against them and each team's form, so had a little fluttter on them.

So yes, no doubt Germany will win now!

Canada are certainly the most entertaining team in this tournament.

Yeah I really loved watching them against Belgium. Been a lot of gutsy spirited and skillful performances so far by underdogs but even then that one stood out.

Because it would mess with TV broadcaster's schedules too much is the key reason I imagine.

Seeing the disaster of VAR though, I'd be very wary of making any further fundamental changes to the sport.

Just leave it as it is.

The sharpness and speed of Croatia and some of the football has been sublime. They keep finding eachother with incisive flicks, one twos, the confidence of every player to pause, turn back, find openings, they look like a club team near their peak.

I've seen so few games, all were painful really, for those who have seen them all, where is the football of Croatia tonight in comparison?

Their first game was an utter dud. But now we've seen Morocco are actually pretty good so it's hard to judge. The whole thing is all over the place, I can't remember a WC with so much to play for going into the final round of games.

Oh now 2-1! Poor Canada.

Croatia have turned-up tonight after being dreadful in their first game (Morocco aren't a bad side, but Croatia offered nothing at all offensively.)

Shame for Canada, would've been great for them to win just to really make the last matches interesting.
