I’d completely forgotten FIFA were thinking about penalty shoot outs in the group stage for 2026. I wonder what idiocy they’ll decide upon in the end.

I reckon the World Cup will be expanded to 64 teams by 2030 or 2034. Once FIFA go to 48 sides they won’t be able to reduce that again and if the new group format, whatever it ends up being is poorly received, suspect there will be further expansion to who gets in.

48 teams means 12 groups of four, with two teams qualifying plus 8 “best” third-place sides for a knockout round of 32 sides. Great for smaller countries who wouldn’t normally qualify let alone reach the knockouts of a major tournament. And, actually, that’s pretty cool. Even if the World Cup has to start in the morning at 10 o’clock at night, half an hour before it goes to bed.

I don't see how it was ruled out though, because the defender had to make the clearance regardless as he was being challenged by another French player, I'm not sure I agree that Griezmann was interfering with play.

Whilst it's funny (but bittersweet for the Tunisians, of course), I doubt the French will care, its not as if most of that team will start any other games.

I suppose Poland and Saudi Arabia doing their bit will provide the laughs tonight by sending Argentina home. Fingers crossed, eh?

The argument for the three team groups was that it didn't increase the amount of matches played by the final four teams. Shifting to four tosses that notion out the window.

Have the Poles done anything of note in big game since 1974 ?

Poland being 'dark horses' is just World Cup lies we hear every 4-8y along with 'watch out for Mexico' and 'don't sleep on <insert African team here>.

The Poles will roll over and get their bellies tickled waving Argentina thru to the next round.

Oh don't get me wrong, I expect absolutely nothing from Poland, but hope springs eternal and all that. I'll be watching the Saudi Arabia game anyway.
