2023. Are you excited?

So with all the predictable and boring stuff listed above we can get excited about the unknown. Almost nothing on this list really excites me. It's not that they will be bad but I cannot remember that many hyped AAA things that were actually exciting before launch. I'm just a bit done with the way the hype cycle works around most games from the big publishers.

Give me the things from left field. They don't have to be wacky or anything, just like to get excited and play it there and then.

I just want a PS5 slim. Then I’ll catch up on Returnal, Miles Morales and all the other exclusives I missed.

Why do you care what it looks like or how big it is? Do you live in a drawer?

Feel like a lot is riding on Starfield, both from an Xbox point of view but also on whether it will be a memorable AAA year.

A Bethesda RPG is a rare creature and for all that others mimic some of what they do, there isn’t really anything else like it. The worry though is that it’s been over a decade since they put out a good game now, and what we’ve seen of Starfield so far doesn’t yet look like a slam-dunk.

But just imagine if they’ve recaptured the old magic. Something on the level of Fallout 3 or Skyrim. Would be mega.

Can't wait...to play all these games in 2026 which is when I'll probably get around to them

:D You never know they might have actually released some PS5/Xbox Series X specific games by then too! ;)

In fact I think this is going to be my new manta just to stay behind the curve a bit. Stop getting caught up in the hype. I did it to a degree last gen and it worked quite well - only played GoW (2018) and Ghosts Of Tsushima this year for example. Also now adopting the same attitude to console hardware too. Part of the reason I went and got a cheap Series S as it was just enough of an upgrade to the OG Xbox One. I expect both Sony and MS will have upgraded hardware in the works at some point at which point I will play catch up - well if anything worth my time comes up to play.

This always puzzles me. With tvs getting bigger compared to 10 years ago, media units getting bigger than the little trolleys that would hold a 40 inch tv, presumably its easy to put hardware out of sight and not have it sit next to you on the couch discussing your day with it wishing your PS5 lost a few pounds so you have something nice to look at after a hard day of work

Just had a look at Wikipedia's 2023 list and it's not exactly blowing me away. I am excited for Starfield and I assume the console release of Darktide will actually happen, but otherwise it looks like a good year for working through some backlog. Perhaps The Game Awards next month might show a few things to add to that list.

I’m in the same boat as womblingfree, in that I can’t stand the look of the current design. My problem though is that my TV is hung on the wall and I have shelving to the left of it where my AV equipment and Series X sit on display. I simply don’t have anywhere to hide it, so I want it as discreet as possible. That’s not really going to happen in its current form.

It’s no big deal really though, I’ve got Gamepass to tide me over until Sony get around to releasing a slim and there’ll be loads of games I’ll want to play on it by the time they do.

Here’s a PS5 in comparison to a 4090

…a fucking graphics card!

What if a slim just isn’t possible? What if Chip fabrication doesn’t get much smaller or cheap enough and the best we get is a weight reduction like in the latest models?

Here’s a thought, you could buy one, enjoy the games out on it now then buy a slim if and when it hits!

Sounds like a good idea to me rather than trying to cram 4+ years worth of exclusives.

I've said it before, but "on display" are the key words there. Who's displaying their AV kit? No-one cares what you bought.

🙄

I’m not literally displaying it, I just don’t have anywhere to put one out of view. And I don’t give a fuck what anyone who comes round to my house thinks, I’m the one who’d have to look at it on a daily basis.

To be honest I probably will pick one up if we don’t see a slim within a year. I’m in no rush though, so I’ll just see how things pan out.

Indeed. Must admit I wish I had the same restraint!  I don't expect anything spectacular to get released over the next couple of years more iterative.

Expect Sony will eventually release some PS5 games that that make good use of the hardware other than more shinies and faster loading. Not sure if it will be anything original though... Spiderman 2? Not sure if we'll see new games like Ghosts Of Tsushima etc for a bit given how long it takes to make games these days and the fact we have a lingering cross over with last gen.

Looking forward to seeing what gets released in 2024 and beyond to be honest as that is hopefully when the more interesting games will be released as we'll be four years into this gen...

Next year will be a bit meh for me after Elden Ring this year, but I'll be watching these with interest:

FFXVI

FFVII Rebirth (depending on "Winter")

Destiny 2: Lightfall

Demonschool

Sea of Stars

Rhythm Quest (the Steam release date is "2023?" so it's uncertain)

Maybe the new Test Drive game?

Oh and P3 Portable on Steam, obvs.

The look of the PS5 has grown on me heaps recently actually. When it’s horizontal it has a goofy look that‘s very “video games console” in the same vein as GameCube or the Dreamcast.

Vertical deffo looks shite face-on, but I quite like it from the side. Like this:

Never bet against Insomniac and a release date. Their office is a Tardis or something.

Quite a few of their studios are working on new IP apparently and we haven’t heard anything from them for a while: Bluepoint, Team Asobi, Housemarque, Bend, Haven, Media Molecule and Naughty Dog all have unannounced stuff they must be working on right now so hopefully we’ll see some kind of end of year State of Play.

I just hope they’re not all fucking GaaS though!

Thank fuck for Indies. That list isn't very inspiring at all

Can I tell you a secret? I was mainly using the op to poke fun at how poorly last year's thread turned out. I'd thought I'd laid it on a bit too think in the post and that's why I went with the same three entries for Microsoft instead of adding in that Minecraft game or rumoured stuff like Avowed or that Coalition side project thing.

Spidey 1 was late 2018, 5 months after God of War.

I suspect it’ll be Christmas next year so over 5 years, plus yeah, Insomniac is some kind of magical game dev dimension.

Can’t bloody wait either way.

I’m actually quite intrigued to see how Sony’s GaaS push shakes out - worst case scenario is of course that they push out a bunch of Anthems but I wonder if the extra polish they apply to their games could make the service ones accessible to someone like me who has never got on board with that model.

And although I really like their cinematic action mainstays I kind of think there might be more potential innovation in these online titles. For example, I’d be pretty sure what a Last of Us 3 or Uncharted 5 would look like, but I have no idea what The Last of Us online thing that’s coming is going to be.
