Maybe next year we start to see more games that use the new consoles hardware a bit more?

Had both the PS5 and Series X and not really found a compelling reason to keep either at the moment. I expect some revised consoles at some point and some games that need the power of a PS5 or Series X. Until then I will just keep plodding on with my Series S and GamePass seems to be enough fun gaming right there ATM. Oh and my old PC with the Oculus S.

How does buying and getting rid of a series x and ps5 and then playing gamepass on a series s while waiting for there to be games that make it “worth” having a series x or ps5 make more sense either financially or just in terms of effort than just buying and keeping a series x in the first place? If you scalped the ps5 then fair enough but that’s the only way this way of going about things makes sense to me.

For games that will definitely come out next year I'm looking forward to:

Starfield

Dead Space

Dead Island 2

Atomic Heart

Resident Evil 4

Forza Motorsport

Stalker 2 (although there's every chance this is indefinitely delayed)

Lies of P

Test Drive : Solar Crown

Redfall

Suicide Squad

Humankind

Age of Empires

Valheim

The Last Case of Benedict Fox

And the most of these are on gamepass. Yay!

Sold both consoles for what I paid for them. Just decided that I'd rather have the money in the bank TBH and picked up a Series S cheap (£130) to try out. :)

I could have kept either but well like to tinker... so did and decided not to keep either of them. Not many times you can actually sell a near two year old console for what you paid for it?! :) I had the Series X for around 6 months or so (got it at launch at RRP) and sold it again for what I paid for it. So never lost any money and had a bit of fun with both consoles.

I'll more than likely pick another PS5 up in a couple of years or so when a slim version is potentially released and there is a backlog of games available to play. Or just upgrade the PC etc. Meanwhile Series S seems to be the sweet spot for me for the time being in terms of form factor, price and performance (Quick resume and seems to run stuff at 1080p fine). Not regretted moving on either the PS5 or Xbox Series X at all. Loving the S though. It's faster at booting than my PC and actually a bit smoother for new releases (Plague's Tale ran better on S than my PC). S was much cheaper option to try than my planned PC upgrade...also runs my old 360 games and XBO digital buys... anyway...just waiting and saving some money then see where I'm at in a while and all the game libraries for all systems get fleshed out a bit more.  :)

I’m actually quite intrigued to see how Sony’s GaaS push shakes out - worst case scenario is of course that they push out a bunch of Anthems but I wonder if the extra polish they apply to their games could make the service ones accessible to someone like me who has never got on board with that model.

And although I really like their cinematic action mainstays I kind of think there might be more potential innovation in these online titles. For example, I’d be pretty sure what a Last of Us 3 or Uncharted 5 would look like, but I have no idea what The Last of Us online thing that’s coming is going to be.

Funnily enough:

Shame. Uncharted 2's multiplayer is one of my top three of its gen, its old-school simplicity a big part of my love for it. Each sequel added more stuff and I think became less thoughtful and engaging for it.

Tears of the Kingdom feels novel as a huge release that'll be superior emulated at launch. At a time when the PS5 and Series are a couple of years down the runway still bobbing on their wheels!

The look of the PS5 has grown on me heaps recently actually. When it’s horizontal it has a goofy look that‘s very “video games console” in the same vein as GameCube or the Dreamcast.

Vertical deffo looks shite face-on, but I quite like it from the side. Like this:

993F5B41-919B-4703-839E-8684327EB9CF.thumb.jpeg.103b37d9f89daa1189eb8c4dc9caea89.jpeg

I kept trying to tell myself the form factor and design of the PS5 looked OK but every time I see one again it just looks odd. Like a big router or something. Sure it's bold but it's just odd looking. Also never liked the shiny easy-scratch plastic front right where you plug things in. What is that about? Surely it would look much nicer and wear better in matt black? Never got the use of shiny black plastic on this and previous gen consoles.

It is what it is though. For me the perfect form and design of a console for a room and which blends in most is the Series S it's just so dinky and minimalist. Sure it's just a small box but it's all it needs to be small and unassuming.

Hoping as time goes on we'll see a redesigned PS5 and Series X that are reduced in size a bit and blend into a room a bit better.

Next year we should hear about Nintendo’s next console as well. Switch turns 6 in Feb which in Nintendo years is quite old.

Yeah Nintendo just cut their sales forecasts so sounds like things are slowing down numbers-wise too.

I know I’m probably on my own, but I hope it isn’t another handheld.

Outside of SF 6 which I have half an eye on. the only thing that excites me about 2023 is the fact that I have just ordered a MiSter and an MX4000 B&O CRT. Hopefully the miSter will continue to expand and improve the cores (Saturn....). So I am excited about the future by looking backwards. Must be an age thing.

Nintendo historically have supported their machines for a fair while NES and SNES both had fairly long lifespans. As did the Gameboy and the various portable consoles

I expect the next console will be an enhanced Switch of some sort. Much like they have in the past with their other portable devices - perhaps a bigger screen, more powerful chipset, more storage etc.

I think the days of Nintendo releasing a pure home console are long gone especially given the success of the Switch. The concept of the Switch is great

just needs slightly more powerful hardware I think. However I expect it will be around in its current form for another couple of years knowing Nintendo.

I do miss proper home Nintendo consoles though and their full sized controllers. But that kind of ended with the GameCube.

I rather hope that Nintendo can at the very least have a dock that has some sort of extra gubbins in it to allow the games to run better at native TVs. I'd be more than happy with the same visuals we're getting now from the Switch, just at 4k and 60fps.

Very happy indeed.

Think it is an age thing. I keep going back to older games all the time of late. Just easier to pick up and play. Last longish modern game I've played in a while was The Plague's Tale requiem and at 15 hours felt like a slog at times! :) Trying to decide what to play next last night and just ended up sticking Space Invaders Infinity Gene on and enjoyed a blast on that. (Very good it is too!).

Sometimes I think many modern games just feel far to padded with unnecessary levels etc to keep the game length long enough to justify the asking prices. But I guess it's what the market wants these days? Sweet spot for me is between 10-15 hours.

Anyway back in topic....

Reading the recent Edge also interested on where CAPCOM take the next Street fighter.

The problem has become that video games are no longer aimed at you.  You are probably 40 - 50 years old.  You were there from the start pretty much.  It's like when you listen to Freak Like Me by the Sugarbabes and your mum shouts "That's just Are Friends Electric by Gary Numan" and you go "shut up mum this isn't aimed at you, and anyway you're not my real mum you can't tell me what to do".

Or you watched Ben Elton on Friday Live in the 80s and saw how Jim Davidson and Benny Hill were just not funny, racist, sexist shit and now you had your own comedy, Ben Elton, Vic and Bob, and your mum says "why is that funny, it's just a man with a stick" and you say "shut up mum, you're not even my real mum" and all that.  But then you watch the Friday Live 40.year anniversary special and all the acts are shit except Ben Elton, Harry Enfield, Julian Clary.  And you realised.. this isn't aimed at me any more. These new acts are fine.... It's me that's wrong.

Video games then.  All we have to look forward to is the same stuff again, better graphics maybe, better frame rates maybe...  But it's all been done. The best game of 2023 is going to be Resident Evil 4 which was the best game of 2006, 2008, 2011, 2014 and then in VR in 2021. And now, they do it all again for the current generation.  And that's not us.

Hmm I couldn’t agree any less, especially in the year which the sequel to BoTW comes out. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy a nice slice of nostalgia like the Resi remakes but Zelda always has me salivating. I look forward to that like I do a new Philip Pullman book, or anything to do with Star Wars, and luckily this year with Andor it was actually good.

I don't think this is true at all [insert massive, unhelpful, context-free list of indie games here] but ultimately what do you want out of games? As long as it's not "to feel young again" I guarantee someone, somewhere is making that exact thing.

I don't know - there's the likelihood that my favourite game of '23 will be the random original indie thing that I haven't heard of before. A bunch of my GOTY contenders for recent years have been original indies: Celeste, Katana Zero, Rhythm Doctor...

That's the EA version - I want to see the non EA FIFA game. Presumably being worked on at FIFA HQ right now....

EA Sports FC will likely just be a rebadged FIFA 23 like you say.

To be fair I expect the FIFA branded game to be a mobile f2p thing loaded with microtransactions and propaganda from whoever their current paymasters are. But it'll probably be so bad it'll be worth a look.

Might be also down to Nintendo still charging the same they did 6 years ago! It’s ridiculous that they expect £300 for six year old tech, sure it’s been selling so well that they haven’t changed it but they must be making lots of coin on each unit sold at this point. A simple price drop by at least a £100 would easily drive sales back up.
