I really need to get onto Pentiment.

7 for Ragnarok seems understandable from what I've played of it (25 hours). It does what it does very well but it's quite formulaic and sometimes very sluggishly paced, with large open areas often draining away the story's momentum just as it seems like it might be getting going. I can still lose hours on it during a session, mind.

Gow is a 9 for me but horses for courses. It’s On a par with the first which was also a 9 for me . But I can understand giving it 7 if you boxed yourself into a corner by mistakenly giving  the first one an 8 because it doesn’t really do anything new.

Fully deserved 9 for Pentiment, there.

Also, with Frontiers getting a 3 and CoD getting a 6, it is evident: Edge 3 is the new Edge 6 (and Edge 6 is now just... 6) ;) In seriousness, I'm interested to read the reviews — I'm curious to see what sent Frontiers quite so far down the rankings!

I'm about the same with Ragnarok, maybe erring toward a 6 just now. I've heard the final third and the post-game stuff is great though so I expect my opinion of it will improve once the pacing of the story stops sapping my enjoyment.

Also I'm sick of hearing about Marvel Snap.

Yeah, the postgame is the best part tbh.

A good series of boss fights and it's fun getting a build to fruition.

If all this is horribly disappointing, the emphasis on combat – never a Sonic strength – is outright baffling. From bog-standard robots to minibosses and the hulking titans that preside over each area, all have one thing in common: they’re as much a slog to fight as Sonic is to control.

Given the persistent control problems, you might think these occasions when Frontiers takes charge would be a blessing in disguise. But they speak to a game that never feels comfortable giving you full command of its star.

Ok Edge

Why are they even "enemies" there rather than inanimate training dummies?

The issue is that half the time the enemies aren't even on screen because you've dashed off to attack one you've knocked back. And then have to return to the same place where the rest are without being able to see them, because the camera doesn't turn around, and if it did as much as it needed to actually show you where you're going then you'd get dizzy.

Not saying it's good or bad. But I'm not sure what the video shows. A hedgehog that moves around between things which half the time aren't in view whilst you're doing so. Enemies which didn't seem to present anything other than a box against which to bash buttons.

And they complain that it has an emphasis on combat... here's some combat.

Sonic Frontiers did get an awful lot of reactionary "gaming gammon" takes, like Stephenie Sterling giving it 3/10 because the overworld isn't green hill zone, like anyone was begging for a done-to-death level theme that's been copy-pasted in the last six fucking games. Or someone kicking off in the rllmuk thread that the title screen is a cloudy sky, not a blue one, like they're not even prepared to start the game they've bought up and let it make its case for itself before rejecting it for not being nostalgic enough, better to literally judge the book by its cover.

Nevermind the series was always about going to new places and doing new things, we've just got to have it shout "remember 1991!" forever for the boomers.  Frontiers tried something new and it worked out, it's not perfect, but it's a better template to build on than the samey crap they've been churning out for the last decade. But if you listened to the online sentiment in certain places they'd have genuinely preferred a shit title where the cliffs have that sodding checkerboard pattern!

The review says you never feel in control. I'm in complete control. I'm beating the crap out of them and not getting hit, because i'm proficient at the combo system. I'm turning the camera and running back to them, because I like to defeat enemies. I could have just run off if I wanted too, player agency is good.

Is DMC a bad game now because you can school enemies the same way?

Do you know what they gave God of War 2018?

I’ve held off the new one for now (addicted to NioH 2) but I loved the last one. I’m guessing the main complaint is it being too similar.

Similar but improved in almost every conceivable way == -1 from EDGE.
That Sonic Frontiers score - a game I've played a fair bit of - is a new clown-shoes score low-bar for the magazine.
