Don't think they targeting SteamDeck support for the first release I read, doesn't mean it won't work but may not be clean, plus all those icons and text look quite small for that size of screen/

I got a review code. I will be covering accessibility so will report back.

I have been on a strict no game-buying policy for a while (other than paying for Game Pass), so can't actually remember what I last bought, but that will change tomorrow. I might have to abandon all my other gaming habits to accommodate this, but I think it will be worth it. And it's been so long since I last played it, I'm guessing an awful lot has changed.

I'll probably ease myself in gradually to get up to speed, but due to leaving my holiday schedule to my manager, who kept on putting it off, until I forced the issue, I have almost all of January off work (1st to the 7th and 15th to the 29th), so I can see a lot of fey moods ahead. :)

I've attempted to play it before but the fact you really had to use other software to keep on top of everything just made it hard to get into. Fully realise you have to commit yourself 100% to this, it's not really one you can have a quick go on, but if they at least have more tools for keeping on top of everything going on I'd be interested.

Been hovering over buying Rimworld as well which seems heavily inspired by DF. The game never goes on sale though.

That's a fair review (I'm guessing). Liked this bit especially:

As ever, Dwarf Fortress is a game you have to meet more than halfway. It requires a voluntary buy-in: a willingness to teach yourself its rules, to take the abstract details of its generated worldbuilding and craft your own mythology. But now, the first steps in exploring its depths are a little easier to take. If you're willing, it's an experience you won't match anywhere else. I'm in for another 13 years, at least.

I liked the mention of the fact that losing should be seen as part of the fun of DF. As someone who feels depressed when things go totally awry in other games that'll be the hardest thing to take on board.

That's one of the things I like about games like this. You get settled in. You've got a nice basic home going. Crops are growing, work is apace. THEN SWEET GLORIOUS CHAOS and it ends.

It's made workable by the fact that getting that first steps going in an entirely new place is oddly satisfying. Laying out those first rooms, figuring out how you're going to do thin.. oh GOD WHAT'S THAT.

Yeah - I finally broke into it by trying to learn one new thing each game before everything went to hell. I've almost certainly told this in the original thread, but on one of my games where I'd just started to get to grips with the basics, I'd made quite a nice fort, with maybe a dozen floors, and perhaps 30 dwarves in it. I was trying to set up farms, and needed water from the river to irrigate them. So I dug the necessary tunnels, put in the barriers and switches so I could control the flow, and then breached the river bank, then I spotted the tunnel I'd missed, and flooded the whole fort, killing everyone but maybe two or three miners who were behind a door. I spent the rest of that day digging them up to safety around the flooded areas, and once they were back above ground I declared that a victory, and started again, knowing a little more than I had before.

3 hours to go...

Font size is fine(ish) on Steam Deck. Have to use the SteamOS magnification to get most from it. But the dark UI is welcome.

Hoping someone creates a good community controller layout, because it isn't fun to navigate

Oh boy! This works so well. I wasn't sure I'd like graphics after having got used to seeing it through the Matrix, but it works really well. Only grabbed an hour, and my fort is already a mess, but it's so good to be back. :)

Need to check if you can reverse the direction of elevation change on the mouse wheel, because I'm strictly in the invert-look camp on this one. I go the wrong way every time first.

Will go back in for more shortly, but other things call right now...

I haven't played in ages, as mentioned, but hopefully this is still relevant advice - get someone making crafts all day every day ASAP. It will give you something to sell when the first trade caravan turns up.

Holy crap. Where did the last two hours go? This is far, far easier to get into. The tutorial is basic but helps immensely and the new UI is just a godsend.

This sounds amazing. I've not played dwarf fortress for years but back in the day I would just do one thing. Then another. Just do this bit. Suddenly it was morning.

I doubt I'll have time to get into this for a few days but I've already bought it!

Been playing on Deck, DF virgin, and this is amazing. Managed to keep dismissing the tutorial boxes and couldn’t get them back, so doing it the hard way, lol.

Got my fortress up and running, workshop, storage, bedrooms and beds for all. So far, so good. I know it will go horribly wrong any minute.

Perfect on Deck. Using a community config called Easy Dwarf Fortress, and just assigned Toggle Magnifier to L4. Otherwise easy enough to learn.

Only issue is quitting the game which just hangs the deck indefinitely.

You didn't mention craftshop. Seriously, get one of them up and running ASAP. Unless things have changed massively you will have nothing you want to sell to the first caravan that turns up. A dwarf turning out tat only gets better at it, and it's tat you can trade for stuff you need. Also (again unless things have changed( get your carpenter to make a fuck load of barrels - so many barrels. They will increase your storage capacity massively, and allow you to make booze. Barrels are really important.
