I just make the mag. There’s a lot of things about the magazine beyond the creation of it that disappoints me.

Don't give up hope. I received RG 240 a few days ago.

 

I assume it's the replacement issue - it didn't have the calendar and was packaged in a transparent bag. Thank goodness the cover wasn't an ultimate guide to Sam Fox's strip poker!

Until the summer I worked at Future. We all got a free Readly subscription and I was told this was so we could easily access any Future mag we needed to (although not all Future mags are on there). They finally turned off my free access this week, 6 months after I left.

I’ve had 240 in the post today (presumably my replacement rather than the original) but no 241 yet. I’ll give it to next week then request a replacement for 241 too.

I actually wrote a history of Sonic's Master System games that appeared in issue 179, and in that I said "The Master System couldn't hope to replicate the impressive speed and loop-de-loops that the Mega Drive version relied upon, but it's arguable that a stronger traditional platformer emerged because of those limits." I think that's fair to say, as it does do a lot of interesting things that the Mega Drive game didn't. You've got the forced scrolling of Bridge Zone Act 2, the vertical climb of Jungle Zone Act 2 and the maze elements of Scrap Brain Zone. Most of the Chaos Emeralds require you to either take a risk or solve some sort of puzzle. Being unable to recover rings influences how you approach the game, as does the fact that you never have any for boss battles. Then there are the ways that bonuses are handled - an extra life floating in the water, a ring monitor that can be switched to an extra life, and the way your ring count determines your end of level bonus.

 

Looking back, I wish I'd said a little more about the circumstances of the game's creation. While it's true that many of the changes arise from the fact that doing a straight conversion would have been a fool's errand, I think it's also important to point out that the development of the 8-bit and 16-bit versions overlapped. It was a Sonic game developed when even Sonic Team was still figuring out what Sonic was, and that's something you can see for yourself - elements of the Master System version reflect concepts that were scrapped in the Mega Drive game, like the underground part of Green Hill Zone, the Labyrinth Zone background and Sonic's singing animation in the end credits. There are unused enemy graphics and music that prove some elements of the Mega Drive game that didn't make the cut were known to Ancient, but Yuzo Koshiro and company had to figure out plenty of stuff independently while making the 8-bit versions and deserve a great deal of credit for doing so.

I spoke to Sam's manager back when I was writing the story of Martech for RG. She promised to discuss it with her but I never heard back sadly. I also tried to speak to Corinne Russell (Vixen cover, also martech) but her manager said she wanted to leave 'the past in the past' or something to that effect. As for Maria, I tried her as well when i wrote the making of Barbarian for Eurogamer, but I settled for Wolf instead lol.

 

It all made a pleasantchange from trying to locate 50-something male coders 😉

I suppose many of them will have now put that part of their career way behind them. Also they probably get a fair few odd requests so just turn them all down to avoid anything weird. It's a shame though - surely that photoshoot with Wolf was a laugh?!
