If you could only play on one console for the rest of your life, which console would it be?

It’s a tough one to answer, there’s 3 big contenders for me:

Mega Drive, my first console and the console I’ve probably explored the library for the deepest.

Xbox 360, the console that got me back into gaming after I kind of lost interest in anything that wasn’t PES for many years.

PS4, the console with a gigantic library with loads of games I’ve not got around to playing, but also plenty of greats I have played.

I think it’s probably got to be the Mega Drive, although there’s an absolute wealth of shoot em ups I’d sorely miss on the other two.

Close between the Dreamcast and the Switch but the fact that the Dreamcast has much more meaning to me, that it’s controllers are guaranteed to be still working for many years (I’m definitely concerned about the future of the Switch as a retro console with it’s easily failing ones) and still has good homebrew games coming out on it (Xenocider, xeno crisis and intrepid Izzy are as good as anything released in its day). Think I’d never get bored of replying the Shenmues, it’s fighters and multiplayer powerstone 2 and Quake death matches.

I guess the biggest question is whether I get access to every game ever made on that platform, or if I have to buy them? Because if I’m having to track down and buy the games then a lot of older consoles are out because some of their best games are so expensive and rare.

For sheer number of games, you'd want a PS1, PS2, PS4, or Switch. There's a fair amount of older stuff re-released on the PS4 and Switch specifically (the Megadrive classics compilation, for example, or the MGS2/3/PW pack, or even SNES games with the Switch subscription, if that counts) to cover some of your retro needs, and the digital stores on both are packed with long-lasting roguelikes that previous generations lacked, plus countless intriguing indies, and ongoing games such as FFXIV and Destiny 2.

I'd say Switch, because I've played more of the big PS4 games, and there's still more stuff to come (e.g. Zelda). I think unless your focus is fully on retro gaming, there's no reason to choose anything other than one of the most modern options.

Sorry to throw another overly picky question into what should have been a fun thread until the Steam Desk Master Race showed up: are we talking about as things stand now, or are we including future releases?

If it's as things stand, I would probably say Xbox 360. Forza Motorsport 4, Forza Horizon 1&2, the Guitar Hero games, Mortal Kombat and Injustice (both of which I think are seriously underated), a couple of Tekken games, Ridge Racer 6 and then, if they don't fall foul of the rules, all that XBLA retro goodness.

If XBLA is out, it might have to be PS2. Grab Turismo 3&4 and then what must be one of the biggest physical catalogues of any console? There's something for every occasion out there

If we're including future releases, then were looking current gen, which would have to be Xbox Series X. I have a Series S and, coupled with Game Pass, I consider it the best console I've owned. So the more powerful version is a no brainer for me.

My four favourite consoles of all time are the NES, the Megadrive, the PS1 and the Xbox 360.

The MD and the 360 are the ones I go back to the most, so it would be one of those.

As things stand at the moment, I'd choose the Megadrive. I'm quite busy with work and life, so the pick up and play games are great. There are plenty of games I've gone back to on and off for years and years, so I don't think I'd get bored of it.

If I was on a desert island, I'd probably go for the 360 because it has more in-depth games which suit longer play sessions as well as many infinitely repayable games such as all those great arcade racers.

PS4 for me just for the pure volume of quality, plus it was the first generation of HD re-releases en masse so you have some great new entries into series and an easy way to play the originals. You can play every RGG studio game for a start!

(Backlit) GBA, definitely!

Best Mario's, Zelda's, Metroids, plus things like Pokémon Pinball 2, Wario Ware, a shed ton of Strategy games like Advance Wars and FFTactics... And it's portable!

My god I think I'm going to have to buy one of those fancy upgraded ones now.

very good shout. Rather than an upgraded one you should think about an analogue pocket…

My head says it would have to be either PS4 or Switch... But my heart says:

Dreamcast.

What a console it was: Jet Set Radio, looking for sailors, Skies of fricking Arcadia, a 3D Sonic game that wasn't total gash, Bangai-O, the fishing controller, Phantasy Star Online, Rez vibrators, beautiful VGA, the customisable Soulcalibur intro, Seaman, and so many of the best fighting games and shmups ever made.

PS4.

I don’t think I’m ever going to run out of PS4 games to try, and the graphics are probably as good as my deteriorating eyesight can absorb.

I just put 40+ hours into Bloodstained for £11.49. Yesterday I downloaded Blasphemous for £4.99. That’ll be me sorted for another 40 hours. I have another 10 or so similar games in my basket. So many good games I’ve never played, and I can’t see any reason to upgrade to a PS5 or a 4K TV because the “OMG LOOKATIT!” factor just isn’t there anymore.

Mine would be the Xbox 360. Best I could think of.  I'd never tire of the Mass Effect Trilogy, Skyrim, Oblivion, GTA V, Red dead, Fable 2, Forza, Gears of War Series, Halo wars!!, Witcher 2.....That's only the ones I can remember of the top of my head. I cant think of a better line up of games on any other system.

Backwards compatibility really muddles this for me, the Series X or a first-run PS3 would be strong contenders for their across-the-board game variety spanning multiple generations.

If we’re talking a single console and its native releases then nothing really trumps the PS2 for a sweet spot of technical comfort, software variety and historical importance.
