And that Atari thing!

It's maybe surprising that most of those listed have been fairly successful. I think if you go further back there were probably as many things getting released but they just died off very quickly. Off the top of my head, things like the N-Gage, Game.com, Ouya.

I bought all of that. Hmm, need to take a long hard look in the mirror. That's ridiculous....

For a few months the handheld market comprised GBA Micro, PSP, DS, Tapwave Zodiac, Gizmondo and N-Gage.  Happy days.

This alone effectively octuples the list, let alone raspberry pi and its numerous clones.

It's mad to see so many retro handhelds over the year, let alone all of them containing the same ARM chips as one another.

Out of the list, I got about eight, with five of them being the more toy-like Retro systems (NES/SNES/Arcades), so I feel I got away quite lightly.

You forgot various NVidia cards. :hat:

Of those listed in the OP I only have a PS5 and SNES Mini. I've been toying with picking up a Switch for months, but I have enough games as it is and I know that they'll announce a new model the day after I buy one.

2 MD mini consoles as well. It's not quite as exciting a time as the early-mid 90's when companies were just slinging shit at the wall to what stuck, but it's definitely another great time for hardware fans.

I had those in the first version of the post, which was more verbose.  They were forgotten when I changed it to just a list.

Also forgot the Game And Watches.

Main games room, and WFH office. Best £200 I ever spent. What's worse is that I have two PS5s..

I told myself, I could buy it during COVID as a salve for my mental health then flip it to break even (or even profit) after. But I use them both all the time. My Mother in Law visits often, and her and my wife watch the (godawful) crown. Going upstairs to 'catch up on work' is a pretty rotten thing to do - but I've done it, and I'll do it again.

That doesn’t include the various VR headsets either. These companies know what they are doing now with consoles every two or three years, and premium subscriptions etc.

I too need to sit down and ask myself some difficult questions about how much I spend, especially if includes phones, speakers, TVs and what have you.

I spent more on hardware last year than I have in years, but with the exception of the PS5 it was all for retro stuff - OSSC, a GDEMU, an IPS screen and battery kit for my GBA (and another for the SP), a wireless keyboard for the Wii, a dock (and cables) for the PSP-Go, a new DS2 and a second-hand GT Driving Force Pro wheel.

This year I’m hoping I get allocated a PSVR2 order, but other than that no new hardware will be bought.

I asked myself those questions when the 4090 came along. At that moment I had the whole works but I sold it all for a hunk of tech that roars as if its life depended on it, but allows me to drive in Night City in its Neon-soaked goodness.

I'm currently happy with the deal I made, although other things will call to me, like the sirens of the sea.

Oh woe to be a fisherman in these times of plenty!

also controllers are more expensive than ever if you go for first party ones on console.  Or impossible to get hold of, like the Switch N64 controller, for example.

Having all these handhelds and controllers means that every six months or so I dedicate a week to charging all the buggers up.

Ah, my office is my games room and the consoles got moved in partly for peace and quiet but also so the kids don't see me decapitating Saxons in Assassins Creed etc.

But yeah, 2 PS5s!

Not a patch on the mid-late 80s.

It was definitely cooler when we had four systems competing with each other (well, not that there was much competition with the Game Boy).  Although I never had a PC Engine until 2006, and the Game Gear was 90s.

Handhelds which have their own games released for them now - I suppose that’s the Switch, Evercade and Steam Deck.
