That preview of Resi 4 with all the new details, plus rumours of an imminent Nintendo Direct have got the hype in me bubbling up, taking me out of the new year blues.

What’s your top 3 games you’re most excited about at the moment then?

I’ll go first!

1. Resi 4 Remake

2. Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

3. Jedi Survivor

That’s a bit boring and predicable isn’t it?

1. Resi 4 Remake

I've stayed away from previews and footage since the first trailer, but if this gets the same treatment that 2 did, it'll be an excellent game made even better.

2. Silksong

3. Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

It's the sequel to the best game ever made, but I'm really worried about the performance, and this has lessened my anticipation for it somewhat.

My anticipation is lessened by the inevitable endless moaning about the performance. The thread is probably going to be a no-go for me.

Looking at my currently outstanding pre-orders, only three currently:

1. Grimgrimoire Oncemore

2. Rayz Arcade Chronology

3. Shikigami no Shiro II

I’ll probably give Redfall a go if it comes out on GP with a couple of buddies. Interested in Starfield as well.

For clarity it will be on Game Pass day one as an MS owned title.

In order of what is coming out first.

1. PSVR2 - Gran Turismo 7 looks amazing, the tech looks amazing. Amazing!

2. Zelda Tears Of The Kingdom. Actually my number one but I’m most excited right now about PSVR2. There isn’t a game in recent memory that meant as much to me as BOTW. I can’t wait to just drink all of it in and get drunk on its amazingness.

3. Spider-man 2. The very definition of comfort gaming for me; looks amazing, feels amazing, swings amazing, and that’s just the first one (and Miles Morales). This being PS5 exclusive will ensure it’s even more The Amazing Spider-man.

1. Octopath Traveler 2

Absolutely adored the first one, played it through 3 times which is pretty unheard of for me, so the highest of high hopes for the sequel.

2. Resident Evil 4 REmake

Somehow only played through the original once so it’s high time to play it again.

3. Metroid Prime Remaster

This one I only ever played the first hour or so for some unknown reason so again, if it exists, it’s time to put that right

Nowt. The backlog thread has beaten the hype out of me. It's made me hyper aware of the money I've spent that's just sat doing nothing.

It's curious because instead of it making me bitter and "fuck everything" which is what I'd expect I'm more like "ah, I'll get round to it at some point". It's quite sanguine.

Saying that, ask me again in may.

I know what you mean. I might just buy it then immediately yarr the rom so I can play it in super-duper mode on a third-party emulator, like Iwata would have wanted.

I adored BOTW wild so much, it's a game that brought my jaded soul the childhood glee of early gaming, I'm so excited but also worried- I've set the bar so high - can it possibly live up?

The Resi 4 remake I'm still cautious about, as how do you improve on perfection?

And Tears of the Framerate is an obvious pick. So my real top 3 is:

3. System Shock

After the risible job they did on Blade Runner, I'm a bit more wary of Nightdive now, but hopefully they will redeem themselves with this one. I have already played enough of the demo that was released to know that this is going to be quite special, and kind of go beyond what this remake even needed to even be.

2. Baldur's Gate 3

960x0.jpg?format=jpg&width=960

Divinity Original Sin 2 was probably one of the greatest RPGs ever made. So this has some serious hype for that alone. Best also to wait until it's finished before attempting early access and all the bugs that go along with it.

1. ULTRAKILL - Act III

ultrakill-2.jpg?w=1200

There's not even a guarantee that the third act will be out this year, but I think it's a fairly safe bet. Act II left me almost totally brutalised, so the next one is probably going to be next to impossible after losing my skills from the last one in the intervening time. It's already one of the best FPS games ever made so this should finally seal the deal.

PC for life!

Zelda TOTK - bought an oled specifically ready for this, sequel to the GOAT, will be delighted if it's just the same mechanics on a new map, like Mario galaxy 2 was to 1. But it's had a long time in development so shoud be even more than that!

Forza 8

Not anything else really!

1.Destiny 2: Lightfall

Yeah, yeah I know but it’s going to be cyberpunk Destiny, with load outs and an in game LGC, and auto recycling blues and well it’s more Destiny and I’m a hopeless addict. Also the Witch Queen  campaign was proper first tier Bungie campaign so if they can get near to that again I’ll be a happy man.

2. Jedi Survivor

Loved the first game; Uncharted X Star Wars is definitely my vibe and Respawn rarely let us down.

3. Atomic Heart

Can’t believe this is actually coming out after being vapourware for so long but Russian Bioshock looks amazing and it’s been a long time since I played a properly interesting looking single player story based shooter.

1. Sea of Stars

vC6YsTjRXiPr9X48.jpg

It's the next game from the talent behind The Messenger. That's it - that's the pitch.

I mean, I wasn't even that brilliant at The Messenger, but I could at least appreciate and respect what it does. Super-tight gameplay, ace pixel art and chiptune music, plus a nice sense of personality and individuality that was achieved without being too wacky. News that Sabotage are now working on an RPG that's inspired by the classics - with Mitsuda contributing a tune or two for the soundtrack - has me pretty excited. This could very easily be my GotY if the gameplay is balanced well. And if it doesn't slip to next year, of course.

2. Final Fantasy XVI

Whilst I like Square RPGs I have a habit of skipping lots of them at a time; this is the first one I've actually been keen to pick up since FFXII. (okay, I played FFVIIR too.) A return to a more classic style fantasy, with combat that seems accessible but with depth, and some gorgeous presentation... I'm hoping this will keep me occupied if we end up with another slow summer. And it's something to distract me during the wait for FFVII Rebirth, I guess.

Just as long as Square Enix don't Square Enix things...

3. Destiny 2: Lightfall

I mean, it's kind of an obligation because Destiny 2 is my dirty little secret on the side, but I've really enjoyed the narrative developments in recent seasons and things - so I'm looking forward to seeing what's in store. And the new subclass and gameplay and stuff looks ace. I just hope they have some decent seasonal activities over the coming months, as I tend to either tire of them quickly or play them to death!
