Can anyone remember the conference where someone announces a game and then does a ridiculous punch the ground in excitement manoeuvre? I think it was for a Plants Vs Zombies title.

I think it was the same presentation, but I'm pretty sure the game was Peggle 2. :)

Haha, thanks. That's probably why I couldn't find it.

E3 2013. Yeah, it's ridiculous.

A marvellous example of when the person you hire to do a live PA only knows how to do pre recorded videos with hundreds of jump cuts.

I can totally understand why publishers abandoned E3. It's been steadily losing relevance for a long time, and after Sony dropped out it was only a matter of time.

I will miss it though. I remember seeing it described as a cross between Christmas and Eurovision, and I love both those things. It brought us gifts in the form of surprise reveals and announcements, which it was always fun to get swept up in even if you didn't care that much about the games. Like Eurovision, it was a wonderful combination of the brilliant and the ridiculous. It was as much a delight for the bad as it was the good.

Oh well. At least this means we should have more to look forward to spaced out across the year, but it won't be the same. No more giant enemy crabs, one million troops or RIIIIIIIDGE RACERRRRRRRRs. :(

Must be a pain for the indie guys. In between all the big announcements from the major firms I guess a lot of publishing deals get hammered out over that week.

Nah, deals happen at GDC and Gamescom, (and other smaller events) - E3 has always been a consumer event first, (so mostly marketing people, rather than publisher biznez types)

Edit: FWIW - I think Gamescom will be next to go, being brutally honest, it's not the same as it was either and is on the decline - that'd have a much much much bigger impact on the business side of things though, so it may just become a smaller trade event and they ditch the consumer show. Games are changing... <sadface>

If they want some cynical marketing good will (and they always do), Microsoft should wait a year and then announce a big live event in June. Invite all the Indies and 3rd Party publishers and cover some costs to make it economical for them. Hit that E3 spirit but own it for themselves without Sony there.

Better use of a few million than most of their marketing now.

E3 used to be something I was really looking forward to every year.
I fondly remember subscribing to C+VG Magazine in the early 90s and the post E3 issue was always a big highlight of the year for me. Opening the magazine to find photos of new controllers and other peripherals, new consoles and screenshots of games shown at E3 was so exciting. This was a time when we had no internet and, as a result of that, no other means of gathering information about gaming news.

Even when internet evolved into a household service the best coverage of E3 was magazines for many years still but as broadband internet became the norm, and the online gaming sites started to earn money from their online precense the need for magazines slowly started to dwindle. Now that the internet is the main source of information for almost everything, E3 is no longer needed as every individual developer and publisher can announce their news at their own leizure instead of trying to finish up a presentation before a strict deadline.

While I'm going to miss the spectacle of E3 I am not that sad it's now over. I'm happy that it used to be a thing, ofc, and I do hope that the games industry can find a new format of a annual or bi-annual gathering of sorts. Maybe even Game Awards or something similar now has the chance to broaden the horizon a bit?

All good things must come to an end and E3 used to be really good. While it might be over for E3 as we know it I'm confident its spirit will find its way into something new and exciting for us to enjoy.

I used to love E3 and the whole presentation thing and following along on here. Mr Caffeine and all the other car crash showcases.

Glad I got to get to one as it was always on my gaming bucket list, watched Greg Kasavin play Crackdown and marvelled at all the money spent on the booths and displays.

Oh no! I have so many find memories of E3. I've never been, though the opportunity did present it's self some years ago when I was affiliated with a gaming website but it ended up not happening. I think I'll miss the sense of occasion and excitement of what games might be announced. i know it'll come from other events and shows now but I am bit gutted there's no more e3...

I’m gonna miss the big fuckoff phone book directory style list of forumites packing out the ‘Recently Browsing’ section of each official thread whenever the live conferences were happening. Always a magnificent sight.
