Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

"Eternal Sunshine..." is absolutely brilliant. Utterly, utterly brilliant film.

It's a tender, sweet story about doomed romances, how couples grow apart, how important memories mean to us,and the old classic that it's better to have loved & lost than tonever have loved at all.

It's a piece of brilliant filmmaking, writing & acting. Carey & Winslet play a 100% realistic, believable couple with tenderness, romance, laughter & sheer disgust at each other when the scenes demand it.

I utterly, utterly loved it. Sort of film you come out the cinema & want to go see it again straightaway.

I absolutely LOVE Winslet, Carrey and Kaufman's Adaptation, so to say I have high hopes for this would be rather understating things....

Did I say I loved Kate Winslet? :D

You'll love her even more after seeing this movie, I'd say. She's wonderful in it. And this is coming from someone who isn't too keen on her...

:D

It's quite depressing actually. And I'm really not a celeb stalking kinda guy...

At least.... I wasn't.

OK. So I saw this last night (yes, at the Edwards Jurupa Stadium 14 in Pedley <_<) and it's great. This is a real film lovers movie, the direction, editing and visuals of the movie are truly amazing, the tricks that Gondry uses in his music videos are in full effect here. Carrey and Winslet are perfect, truly Jim Carrey needs to be in more "serious" movies as he's an extremely convincing lead, as has been shown by the Truman Show and Man on the Moon. Some of the scenes are heartbreaking, seeing a relationship in reverse is a great filmaking device, and manages to make the movie a "romantic" movie without any of the cloying tackiness that a lot of "chick-flicks" get down to. I.e. this is a clearly a love story written by a man.

My only gripe with the movie is that the sub plot involving the scientists was perhaps given too much emphasis, whereas the movie perhaps should have had more Carrey/Winslet scenes in place of them. Also the start/end was a little too obvious I thought, and one gets the feeling that the circular nature of the movie makes it hard to end.

So, not flawless by any means, but highly recommmended if you enjoy movies that you have to think about a bit.

Ok, I'd actually like to ask something about the way the film ended, as I have seemingly interpreted it in a completely different way than anyone else I know. But my way makes much more sense to me. So if you've seen the film, read this, I'd be interested to know what you think.

*SPOILERS*

I'm convinced that at the end of the film they decide to not get back together, because it wouldn't be worth the inevitable ending they both knew would happen. Anyone else I know who's seen it seems to think they decided to get back together, however this doesn't make much sense to me as that's what is hinted at near the start and I can't see Charlie Kaufman ending the script in such a predictable fashion. I also think that the film would have had much less impact on me if I'd interpreted it as the happy ending. Thoughts? Am I completely off on this, or can you see what I'm saying?

Spoilerish reply to Dr Manhatten:

OK. I thought that at the end they came to the conclusion that they would try anyway, then though it probably wouldn't work. So yes, I definitely came out of the cinema with the impression that they got back together at the end of the movie. I'll ask my gf tonight what she thought.

Jesus lord christ is there no better screenwriter working in hollywood today or what. I thought Being john Malkovich was anarchic crazy genius (but with heart), confessions of a dangerous mind was a heavy handling of a brilliant script and Adaptation was probably the single greatest screenplay since Chinatown. So how the fuck has he gone and outdone himself yet again.

Imagine a movie with the high concept originality of malkovich, but with the ethereal beauty of Lost in translation. A love story, but quite bleak and depressing, yet funny and uplifting at the same time. Kate Winslet has never looked so hot and Jim carrey does serious convincingly for the first time (he's given up on the lost puppy look). I cannot recommend this film highly enough. My socks hav been well and truly blown off.

Excellent!

I'll take the gf to see this, and to think I avoided adaptation because it looked pompous (still haven't seen it).

But I'll read no more and go this weekend!

Hey there.

I saw it today. It's my fave movie based on a Kaufman script to date. I wasn't a fan of Being John Malkovich or Adaptation and I thought Confessions was pretty average. Didn't see Human Nature. But this movie was different. I thought it was a really sweet and sad little movie. I read the script and was expecting a science fiction film... It isn't. They basically cut all the science fiction/futuristic stuff out of the script. They also cut quite a big part of the script from the beginning and the ending... I don't know if it was because of the movies budget or not. It doesn't really matter. They made it into a kind of lo fi indie flick. And it works great. Winslet was fuckin great in this movie.

Great little movie.

Despin out.

  • 1 month later...

I finally got too watch this today.I loved it, I could watch it many more times, And i will.I'm not going to expalin lots about it as it's all already been said, And i'm crap at explaining things anyway.

It's a wonderful film though. While watching it i was depressed at what was going on yet still had a smile on my face because i found a lot of it quite sweet.Kate Winslet was so loveable, But still a bitch.Carrey was brilliant, I don't usually like him.

I haven't enjoyed a film this much since Lost in Translation.

Oh and has anyone seen the Tv spots for it?It made it look like a comedy.

they have to get em in the cinema though. thats all they care about.

Oh I understand that, but it meant people I know went in with different expectations and came out hating it, when they may have enjoyed otherwise. Which is a shame. Puts bums on seat though, I guess, and thats what the film companies are worried about...

I've seen a couple of different trailers for this at the cinema over the last couple of months, and it still leaves me with a feeling of 'what the hell was that about?' every time.

Unfortunately, it's confusing rather than intruiging. How NOT to make people want to watch a film.

Big Fish was "quite good".

Looking forward to Eternal Sunshine... more than mere words can say. Question for Kaufman fans: as someone who loved Being John M, Adaptation and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, would I like Human Nature?

I make trailers for our movies when we dont like the american campaign. I made the starsky and Hutch trailer cos the US cut was just tits and ass and we felt the movie deserved more respect.

Everytime I make a trailer I campaign to leave out certain things so as not to ruin the movie. And every time I get vetoed by the studio. I'd love to return to the more enigmatic style of trailer production from the late 70's but I dont think its gonna happen anytime soon.

you made that Starsky and Hutch trailer? well the studio are complete twits in that case because the trailer included most of the highlights of the film (by the sound of things you were arguing against that) but you really don't want to do that especially in a comedy where surprise counts for a lot, I hardly laughed at the horse scene or the grass line whereas if I had seen them without the trailer I am sure I would have found them far more funny. You know there is a problem when more than a few films I have seen have been worse than the trailer. Problem is if you go to cinema you really can't avoid trailers... I saw a trailer for The Ladykillers today, before Eternal Sunshine (which I currently have mixed feelings about - very good film but perhaps just a bit too whimsical for me) and whilst it was thankfully pretty vague, ( and in general Coen films are so packed full of quality it would be impossible for a trailer to ruin them) I am still trying my best to erase what memories I have of it.

I liked Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Eternal Sunshine. Human Nature was bollocks though. Sorry!

It's better than Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and possibly Being John Malkovich, which doesn't stand up to repeat viewing, but it doesn't quite scale the heights of Adaptation.

You talking about Human Nature or Eternal Sunshine? If its Human Nature you're talking about I strongly disagree. If its Eternal Sunshine, IMHO Malkovich is still his best movie.
