When good games turn bad.

I picked up XIII in the game cheapie of the day deal, and for £13 was most impressed, and have been happily playing it for the past week.

Then I get to the end boss....

spoiler ahead...ya haa jimlad

All through the game you can kill people with one carefully placed shot to the head, or pummelling them with a machine gun.

Now i'm faced by an old bald bloke in a mac, and firing grenades, unleashing a minigun and throwing everything I have at him results in tiny amounts of his energy reducing at a time.

Stupid.

Why suddenly change the rules of a game? Perhaps if he had some kind of body armour you had to shoot off you could undertand it, but its just bloody stupid to completely change the whole game, just to make one person an end of level boss for the sake of it.

Totally ruined a good game for me and I can't be arsed finishing it off because of it.

Why do they have to resort to lazyness like this in games? It wouldn't have been hard to have a reason why he's so bloody hard to kill other than the fact he appears to have superhuman powers of something......rant over.

Join my club. I got to that bit. After the 10th go I threw the pad down and traded the game in yesterday along with Max Payne 2. Got Ghost Recon and Simpsons Hit and Run.

Anyway, XIII looked lovely, but handled like a cow. Very disappointing.

Oh, and did you notice how your ability to see footsteps (tap tap tap) disappeared with this fight too so you couldn't see where he was coming from? Yet they were there with the other member a couple of levels previous in that big open room.

XIII frustrations for me as well. The game certainly had its fair share of frustrations up to that point, but I really tried hard to forget them. I wanted to like it I guess... Then, ten attempts at the final boss before giving up.

I agree that boss was a pain. And changing the rules without warning is a lazy way of doing a boss battle. But he really isnt too hard when you know his pattern. I love XIII. Great fun blaster.

Wind Waker has to be a massive contender for great gaming taking serious wrong turn. And lest we forget...Half life.

I always thought the Cradle was a shit ending to Goldeneye...

Until someone told me the grenade cheat.....wouldn't have bothered finishing the game if this hadn't worked

Here is my list of games that p****d me off at the end:

Metroid Prime: Great game.....stupidly hard bosses (Meta-Ridley and MP). I'm not the worlds greatest player tm but, how long does a boss battle go on before you start to lose interest?

RS6:3 Thoroughly enjoying the game then...random stealth level..utter, utter shite :)

Metroid Fusion: SA-X....WTF!

XIII: Stupid baldy guy with mac...totally agree with you (though I did manage to finish it). What will they call the sequel XIV or XIII2 or XIII:II ;)

Zelda: TWW: Yawn....nope....sorry can't see the point (oh...and my GBA link cable wasn't long enough to reach where I was sitting down and tingle pee'd me off as well).

PGR2: Finished on all golds and you get.......(drum roll)....the CLK...which isn't as good as the Porsche GT1 which you got for finishing with all silver...go figure?

Oh well...really enjoyed all these games up to the points mentioned, sure there are more than that, 25 years in the game...man and boy and all that but, my head is foggy from too much drinking ;)

Every game developer should be made at gunpoint to follow the 120 seconds max rule of Nights Into Dreams when it comes to boss battles - long, drawn out marathon encounters are the most boring damn things in gaming by a fair margin.

I don't think it's actually possible to have an adventure game without backtracking.

Half-Life.

Now I know Half-Life is considered very linear, whereas MP is considered to be non-linear. Which got me thinking.

A lot of the time "non-linear" seems to mean "get ready for a heck of lot of backtracking". No thanks. What I like is a game where I can have a choice of different routes through a game. You still progress from start to finish, you don't need to backtrack, and you can replay the game multiple times too to see everything.

Lovely.

(stares off dreamily into the distance)

Now....there was a game!

Did you ever play the limited edition Xmas disc?

I'm goiing to be as predictable as usual, and say the Library. It beggars belief how a game as well designed as Halo can take such a step back, with nothing more to shoot other than shambolic zombies. Who are slightly tougher than the average fare. Over and over again. Oh, and you have that fucking android thing, who fucks off every five minutes to 'open the door'. Bollocks. Still, Two Betrayels, Keyes and the Maw were great fun, so nothing lost really.

The Merc is better than the Porsche on the more curvy tracks. Or so I'm told. I've still got 40 golds to get.

Broken Sword 3 comes to mind immediately. While it's technically flawed straight from the beginning, at least the story and situations are entertaining. By the time you get to the Prague castle, the quality of the story makes a nosedive, more and more glitches appear and the puzzles get downright stupid. All building up to the worst ending in a videogame ever. What a huge letdown that was.

Metroid Fusion: SA-X....WTF!

Agreed, after all the really hard bosses (can't think of any off the top of my head, but there were some right fuckers) the SA-X was such an anticlimax. Bosses are NOT meant to be defeated with ease on the first go (though the boss following the SA-X, who was even easier, I thought was alright seeing as you had a strict time limit to beat him - really got my pulse racing that did ;))

Well, after Nightmare I was glad that the rest of the bosses were a bit easier. My god.

If you look on the high score cards....except for the TVR Speed 12, most of the records are set by the Porker..

On the Nurburgring, the CLK tops out at 195mph....Porsche can get up to nearly 220mph. If you have players of similar skill, the ones with the GT1 always win.

Mind you, saying that, I was racing against some yanks who seem to have the CLK tamed...but they were all rank 20's and above (bah...they must have no life).

Once you have got your 40 golds, try and see....you will be dissappointed ;)
