EA making GoldenEye 2

After weeks of speculation, the publisher announces a sequel to the N64 classic. In a twist, the spy actioner will let gamers become Bond villains.

Ending a flurry of rumors, Electronic Arts announced today that a sequel to the classic N64 James Bond shooter GoldenEye is in the works. Development of the game is already under way at EA's Los Angeles studio, and the game is due on "multiple platforms" this fall.

"We look forward to continued success with this fall's release of a new chapter in the Bond saga and the creation of another blockbuster franchise in GoldenEye 2," said Travis Rutherford, senior vice president of MGM consumer products and interactive. MGM produces the James Bond film franchise.

While the existence of James Bond 007: GoldenEye 2 was something of an open secret in the industry, EA's announcement surprised many. In a twist that's sure to thrill anyone who has ever rooted for the bad guy at the movies, GoldenEye 2 will let "players become the ultimate villain in the Bond universe," according to EA President and COO John Riccitiello.

GoldenEye 2's story will follow a British secret agent who is dismissed from MI6's '00' (double-O) program for "reckless brutality." Like the fallen spy played by Sean Bean in GoldenEye the film, players will soon enter the criminal underworld. Eventually, they'll link up with Auric Goldfinger, considered by many to be the best Bond villain ever from the film that bears his name, Goldfinger. The game's goal will be to seize control of the "world's greatest criminal organization," which is presumably the S.P.E.C.T.R.E. crime syndicate. GameSpot will have more details on the game as they become available.

Whether this will actually mean anything in gameplay terms is debatable, but the idea sounds fun all the same.

And this has to do with Goldeneye...what?

This just smacks of EA grabbing a recognisable name and then just sticking any old game to it.

God, I hate EA.

And I don't care what anyone else thinks. It is my right to have this hatred if I want to. So there. Nyer.

But take away his gun and he is as useful as a lettuce in a tomato only bar fight.

But Blofeld....ahhh, a master manipulator and fecking scary to look at. No superfluos third nipple for him, a huge scar right by his eye shows that he must have been a nutter in his youth.

Yeah, but Christopher Lee is scarier than Donald Pleasance. In my book, anyway. And it was Scara's nonchalant menace that always did it for me. "He always like that mausoleum. Put him in it."

Why on Earth they want this added pressure is beyond me. IMO EA have proved they can make a good Bond romp, what they are looking for they simply won't get. Goldeneye pretty much established console FPS as a force to be reckoned with, it's not about quality, it's about achievment. I've enjoyed EoN more than Goldeneye, but it's not revoltionised a genre. Unless EA pull of a miracle, neither will Goldeneye 2. Doesn't mean it won't be fun, but they are inviting scorn from fans and critics alike, for daring to mess with a gaming legend.

It'll hurt them in terms of what the hardcore Rare/Nintendo fan will think of them, but in terms of casual gamers, even if they game is just "pretty good" it's gonna be a good thing. And it's those casual gamers that have put EA where they are now.

Goldeneye is the biggest name in modern Bond, so being able to use that name will no doubt help sales.

Goldfinger...ultimate villain....no way man, Blofeld wins hands down every time.

But Blofeld wasn't in the film Goldfinger.

considered by many to be the best Bond villain ever from the film that bears his name

(Presumably the others think that Odd Job is the best Bond villain ever from Goldfinger)

Could someone explain to me again on what grounds this is worthy of being called Goldeneye 2?

Fuck, I'm gonna go out and make a sequel to Big Trouble In Little China. So what if it'll have absolutely nothing to do whatsoever with the original? I'm going to set in Soho and make it about the sex lives of a put-upon waitress and her best mate.

Hmm, so since you're playing a 'baddie' agent (not Bond himself) they've crafted the story so that you won't have to kill innocent 'goodies' but presumably just Goldfingers lackies as you try to take over SPECTRE. I wonder if James Bond himself will make an appearence to kick your arse at some point.

Wicked. Will Kim Catrall still be in it?
